I always interpret the song as a ww1 soldier suffering from PTSD and is haunted by the memories long after the battles have ended. He laments about future wars and how it is "The same old thing, since 1916". The "zombies" were just the people dying over and over again in his head and the word 'zombie' could also refer to the soldier himself. Living life as someone who seen death and is practically already dead himself (in a mental, emotional, and spiritual sense).

Read this if you have ever felt alone, depressed, suicidal, lost, scared, worthless, abandoned, or anything of that nature, this is for you You Are Beautiful. You Are Wanted. You Are Wonderful. Don't quit on yourself. Don't hurt yourself. You are worth the world and nobody wants to see you suffering. This is not the end. The way you feel right now will pass. Peoples minds will change. Things WILL get better. We love you and are always here for you. Do NOT do something permanent, something temporary. You're better than that. All stars need to see darkness before the light. And always remember, Don't change so people will like you. Be yourself & the right people will find and love the real you. Your own unique Mindset always trys to engage in the right ways Now read the first letter of every word You Matter! no matter what other people may say. Always know this is true. It helps. You are worth my time to write this. I do care.

Thanks for the laugh, OP. Snark and comedy are my family's most potent coping methods. One of the most important and brutal lessons I've learned in my life is that I need to take time to laugh, for melancholy is such an easy trap for people like me that I sometimes don't notice I've fallen into it again. And a lot of people in the replies need to take a deep breath and think about life. If you cope differently with stress and trauma, that's fine, just lay off those of us who need to laugh while we mourn. I'd hate to be so serious that I wouldn't make dark jokes.

This was inspired by the IRA bombing in Warrington, Cheshire in 1993. Two children, Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, were killed. The IRA (The Irish Republican Army) is a militant group determined to remove British troops from Northern Ireland. Lead singer Dolores O'Riordan claimed that "Zombie" speaks about "The Irish fight for independence that seems to last forever." The lyrics even say, "It's the same old theme since 1916." Like the responsive works of Yeats, Heaney and U2, the Cranberries claim they wrote "Zombie" to be a "Song for peace, peace among England and Ireland." On August 31, 1994, just a few weeks after this song was released, the IRA declared a ceasefire after 25 years of conflict, leading some critics of The Cranberries to wonder if the IRA was willing to call a truce to make sure the group didn't release any more songs about them.

My dad loves this song. He's ex military. He's a quiet man, typical really. I listen to this song and sometimes wonder if it reminds him of any of the things he's experienced as a solider. War is all the same, just pure tragedy. I can begin to get into his head when I listen to this song. When I watched the music video, one of the children uncannily looked so similar to my little brother. Idk, maybe really shows you how tragic it can be.

This is my mom’s favorite song, she used to play it for me when I was 4 or 5 and everytime we listened to music she would always play this for me, of course, that was before I grew up, my family isn’t too fond of me anymore and expresses that very well, I miss the simpler times when I didn’t realize how much of an addict my mom is, and how I picked up that gene, looking back at it all I never had a good childhood, it was very traumatic but now I realize that, I realize I never got what I needed, attention and whatever, though I’m still very young, I feel like I don’t have that much time left. This song also reminds me of the feeling I get when I know something is about to go wrong, the beat shows it completely, and the words I relate to in a way, but this song really just reminds me of my childhood

Sometimes on the anniversary of his death this comes on. I take it as a sign that he's up there, listening to this while riding four-wheelers and hanging out with Grandma, or as we called her, Ma. ...SONG OF THE DAY!!!

DieselWoWrecording Service You don't get it. The weapons of war change. The people, the reasons, and the methods all change. But war itself never changes. Warfare as it is today is fundamentally no different from warfare thousands of years ago. Just humans killing humans for ultimately pointless reasons.

You can hear the sadness and emotion in every chord and beat. Great song with meaning from my childhood.

I’m sorry to hear you were in Kosovo. We had many refugees here in England. My family befriended a group - two women and 6 orphaned children who had seen their parents being murdered. I was only a small child myself but my parents explained it to me and I’ve never forgotten them. Sending my love to you x

I found out about this song after hearing Bad Wolves' cover on the radio. I fell in love with it immediately, and not long after, I learned what the song was truly about. This is a very powerful song

The crazy thing is, Bad Wolves actually were going to have the front woman of the cranberries sing the lyrics on their version, she agreed and everything, but she unfortunately passed away before it could be recorded.

FoughtStatue No, I looked it up on Wikipedia because I wanted to know what was the meaning behind the song ! Sunday Bloody Sunday was a U-2 song from back in 1982 maybe that's what you're talking about my friend, I'm sure U-2's Sunday Bloody Sunday had something to do with what you said ? Anyway you have a great night !

FoughtStatue Are you Irish ? My Grandfather was from Ireland, but I know how much the Irish people don't like it when an American says he's Irish through his ansestors ! But when someone asks me what are you I say Irish lol, because when asked that question they really mean where did you're ansestors came from, my Grandmother was from Scottland, so all my ansestors came from somewhere in the UK.... Peace my brother...

Ken Bray Yeah I think you’re right. I just usually think songs about the Irish and uprisings and things like that are about that Sunday. Also I am not Irish but my ancestors are Irish. Also have some English and German(apparently I’m related to some English kings so that is cool)
