In this video I compare the Cranborne Audio Carnaby HE2 to the Cranborne Audio HE2 Legacy version. Is there a difference between these two units and if there is can you actually hear it. We asses the curves in Plugin Doctor and look at the differences. Now we know what the differences are we can listen to the same audio passing through each unit and check if we can hear these differences.
Standard Version Pros
A smoother shelf on the high band that adds more high frequency content.
Standard Version Cons
You need to power on the unit from the front panel when you power on, unlike other units which power on when you turn the power on to them.
When powering on do not look directly at the HE2, the lights are super bright and will leave an image of the GUI burnt onto your retina.
Unless you know what the button you are pressing is, until it is active and illuminated you won’t see the button name.
Legacy Version Pros
Easier to see the readouts on the legacy version. Has markers to indicate every two steps.
Buttons have text beneath them to indicate what they are.

Can’t even front. I liked the legacy version every time. It added a certain clarity to the mix that gave it a little more punch.

Small point to mention, on both the build-in Ethernet port is not working (yet). So the only way to control the unit is via USB-C.

I would go with legacy version, made in the EU hand built. Black version is manufactured in China.

Legacy version has more punch with the low band it seems.

Paul, I have my Cranborne HE2 hooked up and I have a question. When you have the VST plugin open in your DAW and you touch a physical knob on the unit does it update your plugin? Mine seems to go only one way from the plugin to the unit but not from the unit to the plugin. I wonder what I am doing wrong. You have any idea?

When I upgrade to 4 sidecars I’ll definitely get one of these. Black face all the way though. I can’t see the benefit in wasting £700. I think the differences in the two might well be due to component tolerances

For me booth units sounds good but I think the Legacy version sound a little bit transparent, depth and open. Also the low frequency has more body in the Legacy version.

Great video Paul!!! I like the standard version better but here is the thing, did you validate your test by checking on how your standard second unit compares to your first standard version? You have the ideal control environment to see. It looks like I might get my unit next week since you have your standard version now.

hey! so i also have a legacy he2 and it looks way smoother than yours, may we know the settings used to test? I can do the same on my legacy to see how much different are they! (I’m aware about different converters)

My HE2 will be here Friday. What EQ in the 2-3k price range would you pair with it? I seen your other videos but thought you may have an updated thought about it.

I am lucky enough to own an HCL Thermos and would like to add a second contrasting EQ to my rig. Currently, I'm eyeing the HE2 and also a Gainlabs Empress. I know they are different, but I'm looking for opinions on what anyone else would go with as a second "color box"/MOJO EQ to compliment the surgical and sweet-sounding Thermos.
