While installing a solar field in a home’s backyard within an upscale neighborhood a crane truck had some sort of failure, one outrigger gave way. The crane’s boom tore through the roof of the residence. The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded along side USAR Task Force 103. The residents who were home at the time were unharmed. The home is red tagged. The same company that owns the truck uprighted it by using other cranes.

Winds were up to 12 to 14 mph in Torrance the other day. I can only imagine if the winds were just as string up the hill, what a fight the crane operator must've had just trying to maintain control. He/she obviously lost that fight. They should pick their battles more wisely, and have the appropriate equipment to successfully win!! Very interesting to watch a crane rescue a crane. Reminds me of the TV show, "Heavy Rescue," about big rigs, semis, loaded trailers with cargo that have wrecked on a busy highway & need to be uprighted & towed . . . reminds me of an episode when a tow truck gets stuck midst tow job and has to call a bigger tow truck to get them out, LOL. But, all jokes aside, it takes major skill(s) to operate such machinery, my hats off to the rescuers!!

Great video, just wish you wouldve showed the rear drivers side outrigger beam, it would give a better idea of why the crane turned over. From the aerial shot it looked like the beam was twisted.

Not trying to be too judgmental since I'm not a crane operator, but is it common for a crane to reach over a home with occupants in it? I'm curious to know if there are rules/laws/protocols/policies/etc. for that. Personally I know that humans can make mistakes and machines can malfunction, but I'm not sure I'd want to allow home occupants to be anywhere near the fall zone of a crane operation. I think that's my biggest criticism of this situation, so I guess that is a bit judgmental. Please reply if you have any knowledge of this kind of thing.

After 26 years I left the crane business due to a flooded market of inexperienced lever pullers. This should never ever happen. Of the more than 500 cco holders I've worked with I can only say that 12 were crane operators, mammoet and tnt use to be good about screening for qualified applicants, sadly no more. I don't what's worse, somebody who bought there cco at Walmart or a union lever puller who thinks he is an operator

If you know the weight of a given lift, you shouldn't get into a failure scenario. Looks like the driver rear outrigger twisted and gave up

Because the "union" label somehow is correlated to operator competency? C'mon dude. Every operator is his/her own person union or non-union. You'll likely find good and bad under both labels, if you dig enough.

Actually after that I'd probably trust them more than anyone in the immediate aftermath because of their renewed sense of being careful and being extra safe. They, to save face and keep the business alive, would have an extreme sense of urgency to want the recovery to go as perfectly as possible.

Using solar they can't be to smart to start with.

Umm... that's a pretty uninformed statement. In many areas, solar indeed has trouble paying for itself, but in other areas, it not only pays for itself, but becomes a surplus and source of relatively easy income.

It looks like the truck was not positioned correctly. The supports on the driver side did not look fully extended either. I think if he or she would have nose up to the house that the operator would have a different out come. Or if it does not feel safe do not do it. Safety is number one concern.

That boom on tipped crane is hyper extended. Combined with weight and maybe winds. Seems to be a unsafe and beyond limits of a truck mounted crane. Oops a Daisy.

@@javiermejia3848 Well.....there is a hard stop at full extention of the outrigger beam is what I meant. When extending, it auto stops (CLUNK) at full extention, there is no way for it to continue. IF it DID go past (and I could see how he would not notice that, as there is the hard stop usually there) that would mean there was a break or other mal function in the beam, then all bets are off! It frankly has never occured to me, with over 20,000 hours operating 5 different boom trucks in the last 22 years, that a beam could be over extended, and I'm still not sure how it could happen, but I will take your word for it.
