Cranes are a family, the Gruidae, of large, long-legged, and long-necked birds in the group Gruiformes. The 15 species of cranes are placed in three genera, Antigone, Balearica, and Grus. Unlike the similar-looking but unrelated herons, cranes fly with necks outstretched, not pulled back.
Cranes are winter visitor birds in Pakistan. Three species of cranes visit Pakistan during winter season. These include; Common crane, Eurasian crane and Sauras crane. In Bannu and Kohat districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan hunters use to trap cranes live. Peoples in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are fond of keeping cranes as pets.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Department has imposed a ban on crane hunting with guns. The department allows only live trapping of cranes in only a small numbers. This is just to stop killing of cranes by hunters.

We must preserve this beautiful creature , these migratory birds are our guests We should make strict laws to prevent hunting of these species. I have been hunting for a while but now I feel really shameful and regret what I have been doing to these birds ... Even common domestic sparrows are rare these days ....

Informative video. Sadly there is not awareness in Pakistan about wildlife. As soon as birds starts coming ,sadly people starts hunting. Also capture them and keep them in houses as a decoration pieces. Wild life should only belong in wild.

Now it's population is decreasing day by day. Very impossible to found in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa areas. In 90s occasionally we saw their migration at early morning in Peshawar and my mother tell us to pray for them they r guests/travellers.

Actually, there are six extant genera of cranes (family Gruidae), Balearica, Burgeranus, Anthropoides, Leucogeranus, Antigone, and Grus, Balearica contains two extant species: the Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum) and the Black Crowned Crane (Balearica pavonina), Burgeranus contains a single extant species being the Wattled Crane (Burgeranus carunculatus), Anthropoides contains two extant species: the Demoiselle Crane (Anthropoides virgo) and the Blue Crane (Anthropoides paradiseus), Leucogeranus contains a single extant species being the Siberian Crane (Leucogeranus leucogeranus), Antigone contains four extant species: the Australian Crane (Antigone rubicundum), the Sarus Crane (Antigone antigone), the White-Naped Crane (Antigone vipio), and the Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis), and Grus contains five extant species: the Common Crane (Grus grus), the Black-Necked Crane (Grus nigricollis), the Hooded Crane (Grus monachus), the Red-Crowned Crane (Grus japonensis), and the Whooping Crane (Grus americanus).
