being a country gigger for years, i'm a die hard Twin fan but my back up is a Peavey 2x10 Delta Blues. when I go sit in at an open mic, I take the Peavey because it is more versatile with a nice perdictable break with the pre amp set at 7,5. nice fat clean tones with an American Tele with Duncan 4 position switch/humbucker set up.

Cranked amps, when you can do, always sound better to my ears than pedals. I'm fortunate enough that my studio iis in a detached building, and I dont have close neighbors, so I usually run my amps (Katana 2x12, Bassbreaker 15, and a Blackstar Artist 15) around 90ish db. Sometimes I get a bit over 100db. Glorious. Cant wait until I get my aby pedal. Now after watching the entire vid, my fav is the tele/supro. Of course I'm sure its different in person as opposed to via youtube.

How does it feel when in a room with a loud amp?
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, I found it a bit intimidating. I’m usually really comfy playing guitar and love to play dynamically, i.e. picking quietly and then furious and aggressive. But in that fist half an hour, with those loud amps, I was definitely off my game.... kinda scared to hit the strings. And with the hearing protection you feel a bit isolated and just not really “in the moment”. After half an hour I grew more accustomed, and once I turned down from CRAZY loud to just “gigging loud” it was great. I could play without hearing protection and yet revel in the sheer volume and tone. Gorgeous and quite addictive if I’m honest 🤣

It all sounds pretty good. Tell you what, a while back I finally realized, at least for me, that there is no "setting". Mess with the knobs...get different tones. Mess with different amps get different tones. But, I would have loved to hear the LP and the Marshall. All I have is a modified Les Paul and a modified Fender Blues Deluxe. So fun.
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. Totally agree with your comments on settings. It’s human nature to find a tone you like and then take notes of where the knobs are at, thereby killing all potential future discoveries 🤣. Plus, the room you’re in, the mood you’re in, the guitar you’re using, the pickup selection - all has a bearing. So yes, every day is a new day - fiddle around! On a different note, I’m dying to take the Marshall to the rehearsal rooms. But here’s a preview of what my Les Paul sounds like through my cranked Marshall (the neighbours were out) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sK2gqtuavby2d2g.html. In my opinion, this is the best tone I’ve ever achieved on KZfaq. Cheers Mike

Paul - great vid as always. The volume diff with the amps may be down the speaker efficiencies. I put a Celestion Blue in my Romany12 (100db) and it went a lot louder (and cleaner) .. and now has the Vox sparkle too. If I switch to a Jensen P12Q (94db) then volume drops and the amp has to work harder for same volume so you get those lovely natural harmonics and more American sound. You could try the Romany into the Celestions of the Vox and see what you get..
@paulstaffordcook8799

Ah, that makes sense. After all, the Supro only has a 10” speaker..... must be rated fairly low, which is probably why I like the Supro so much... sounds gnarly as the volume goes past half way.

Hi Paul, nice comparison of your amps on a cranked volume. I'm not sure if the recorded video is a fair communicator of how it sounded to you in the room. Each amp sounds good when you play them - and of course it has to do with just that... you are such a cool cat on that guitar! I guess I'm a bit biased towards that little tweed amp of yours, but that Supro did also sound very good to me. As I'm "G.A.S 'ing" for a tweed type amp like yours, I would love to hear the two amps I mainly use, played by you in this line up, just to see if I really need another one :-D . It is a Blues jr III that I have pulled from the original cabinet and made into a head. It also have the "Fromel" mod, which I think made it sound better. And a fab 50W Dumble/Fuchs ODS clone, also made into a head. I play both through a Fender Deluxe 12" cabinet with an Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker. My guess is you'd love them both ;-)

Man, I read your words carefully, to take it all in.... you are clearly good with your handy-man skills.... in fact, you’re the very chap that can change pickups in 335 style guitars - I watched your excellent PG Blues / 335 video a while ago - and you need serious patience and skills to carry out a job like that, working through the F holes 🥵. Yes, I DO like the sound of your two amps..... If only I was local to you I could pop round and plug them in 🤣

@@paulstaffordcook8799 How cool that you've been watching my videos :-) I really got in over my head with that pickup change in the 335. But there is a first time for everything, so I managed to get all the "intestines" back into the guitar body. When it actually worked afterwards it was a great feeling of mastery. I ended up putting the stock pickups back in though...Edinburgh is not that far from Stavanger. Let's see if I pop round when the Pandemic comes to an end ;-)

Great review Paul, I found your channel looking for Cornell amps. Great playing and tone. Would the Cornell 12 be good for home use only (Attenuated)? I,m looking for a good home amp, but not a modelling amp.
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. Delighted you liked my wee vid 👍. Yes, I’m lucky enough to have 4 valve amps, all of which are 99% used as home use. It sounds mad, but I can absolutely recommend ALL of them for home use, even the crazy loud Marshall and Vox 🤣. Mind you, my sonic territory is usually light bluesy crunch tones as opposed to more saturated gain. So all 4 amps give me these lush tones at bedroom volume WITHOUT pedals, EXCEPT the Supro, which does need an overdrive pedal to get crunchy at house volume. But if I’m pushed to name the “best valve amp for home use”..... it’s gotta be the Cornell, on its must attenuated setting. Man, all you do to dial in a great tone on that thing is turn it on 🤣. Turn it on, strum a G chord, and bam! Credit cards start flying out your wallet and before you know, you’re explaining to your wife why you have a big grin on your face and no money left. Great customer service too. Being hand wired by a small team, you get the feeling they would be distraught if one of their amps had a problem. By the way, I’m not endorsed by Cornell, not was I gifted this amp. I’m just a fan of the Romany 12. Hope this helps.

Paul, you have created a nice amp collection! I wonder - have you ever tried Carr amps? I'm debating between the Marshall Astoria Custom and Carr Mercury V, for getting a Plexi tone at a low bedroom-ish volume level.
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, now I’ve heard of Carr amps but I know nothing about them. So I had a quick google and I’ve read up on the Mercury V..... sounds interesting. I’ll watch some KZfaq reviews tonight. So whilst I can’t speak for the Carr, I can confirm the good and bad about my Marshall. The BAD: (1) Heavy! (2) A few too many knobs, and push/pull facilities etc. I prefer ultra simplicity (3) not what I’d call versatile.... it wants to break up and drive, it doesn’t do spanky cleans. The GOOD: (1) Sounds just marvelous - in my opinion this is the best sound I’ve ever created on KZfaq: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sK2gqtuavby2d2g.html (2) that character can be achieved at bedroom volumes via the “power reduction” knob, plus using the Gain knob (3) beautifully built, with a wee sticker showing the person’s name that signed it off (4) looks old and retro. Enjoy your dilemma - the Carr looks fabulous by the way - SO retro 😀

I have listened a few times to this to take in all tones and choose what I would like to be using and have to say that I really liked the Supro. It just sounds perfect for the type of music I play ( mainly blues) and the trem is amazing set slow and low. They all sound great but the Supro wins it for me. Cheers Paul. Great comparison 👍
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Richard. Yes, I’m with you on that. There’s something really retro and characterful about its sound. Also, it’s not intimidatingly loud. Sometimes an amp reviewer will talk about the volume getting to a certain level (say no. 6 on the amp), and then beyond that it doesn’t get louder..... it just gets more gnarly and compressed. That’s exactly what happens to the Supro. It’s great! I think it’s because the speaker is only 10” and is not capable of mega headroom. One of my subscribers says he has this amp (and loves it), but that he swapped the speaker to a more powerful 12”..... He says he got much more volume and headroom. Whilst that works for him, I think the charm IS the smaller speaker and the lack of clean headroom. Cheers Richard

I just know that every time I try a drive pedal with it, I end up putting it off again 🤣, and just turning up the amp’s gain knob. My other amps love gain pedals. Very strange. Must be something unique about how this amp is voiced.

Hii Paul, stupid question here: could you explain one day how to have a Tele hanging on standing and avoiding the neck dive -drives me crazy- and that sensation of the neck being further away from you than a Strat? My favorite sounding and playing guitars (seated) are Teles, but I can’t stand strapping them on when playing standing up live. This channel is awesome. Thanks!
@paulstaffordcook8799

Hi JSpic 👋. I’m gonna open up this question to anyone else reading this post..... the reason is this: I’ve NEVER noticed this.... genuinely. I’ve noticed it with a Gibson SG. In fact I’ll go so far as to say that Telecasters are my most comfortable guitars to play. More than strats. I learned to play Guitar on my Dad’s 1978 Telecaster and was smitten ever since. So maybe my body is just shaped that way? Anyone else reading this thread have any thoughts?
@plantagenant
@plantagenant 4 жыл бұрын
Never noticed it....Strats and Tele's seem to be the most comfortable guitars that hang very well. The SG is notorious for neck diving and the Firebird too....but then the Firebird is such a weird beast it feels like the neck to 20 feet long and shoved way over to the left so neck diving is just one more thing to adjust to. Lots of people find wider 3" straps can help but I've not tried it.

@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Didier 👋. I think amp reviewers use the “pick attack” statement as a stock piece of “journalist speak”. In all the amps I’ve ever owned and tried, I can’t say I’ve ever noticed one amp handling pick attack better or worse than another. What I DO notice is tone characteristics. And so I love my Cornell because of its rich tone, which is apparent from the very first strum of a G chord. The stereotype of a Tweed amp is warm, Bass rich, brilliant highs, scooped mids.... an instantly appealing sound. And the Cornell hits that brief perfectly. So if you DO buy the Cornell, you’ll have a fine example of the breed. I’m not sponsored by Cornell by the way.... I’m just a fan. Cheers Didier

The Supro voicing sounds like its crying. So sweet. All amps are great. I just wish Vox had attenuation and a bit lighter. Cornell has a wide tone variety.

Thanks Glenn, yes the Supro is very different to the Vox, so it’s great to have both. in fact, if I was gigging, I’d love to use both and switch between the 2 for tonal interest 😀

Paul Stafford Cook many years ago I was interested in an AC30 and I was at a music show at the NEC in Birmingham,I was loitering around the cox stand and one of the guys told me that the demonstrator would be back in a couple of minutes so I could go and wait in the sound booth which was about the size of a very small bedroom and was jam packed full of amps A couple of minutes later the door opened and in walked Adrian Legg who was the demo guy Needless to say the next 15 minutes or so were incredible but I think my tinnitus is directly linked to a fully cranked AC30 that he sat on to demo it 🙉 We both agreed that I probably needed something a bit smaller for my bedroom practicing and your video brought it all back to me so thanks again

Adrian Legg! Wow, that name takes me back..... I remember hearing him on an Ovation Adamas.... mind blowing! So fast, notes popping out everywhere. I remember his album sleeve saying something like.... “file under L, for Ludicrously Hot Guitar Playing”. Sorry about your tinnitus.... that must be a pain in the ass. Well ears. But everyone who suffers from it says it’s a real bummer. Cheers Colin 👍

Sorry for the off topic: don’t you think Teles should come with the belly cut? Even if not as deep as old ones on Strats
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 4 жыл бұрын
Hi JaBig, thanks for the compliment on my playing. Delighted you liked the Quarter Pound pickups 👍. As regards a belly cut on a Tele.... ooo, I can see why some would want that.... but, for me, part of the charm of a Tele is the “slab” of wood. Also, if the Tele is lightweight (like all the swamp ash versions), it’s even less of an issue. But that’s just my personal taste. Cheers for watching 😀

I would be very careful about buying a Romany 12, mine was bought from new and it developed major faults in less than two years. Always played sparingly (mainly on a weekend) at home at front room volumes. The cost to get the amp right again just spiralled and spiralled so I had to move it on.
@paulstaffordcook8799

Hi Ribod. Interesting... My one did have a recent issue where a piece of solder came loose in the attenuation pot... but the team at Cornell fixed it promptly and did it for free. Sounds like you got the rotten apple.... that’s unfortunate. Mind you, I’ve only had mine around a year, so I better not speak too soon 🤣

@@paulstaffordcook8799 Hi Paul, faulty attenuator pots should be easy enough to diagnose and fix without the aid of a schematic. Lesson learned, the first thing I will do when I look for a new amp in the future is make sure there is plenty of relevant diagnostic information out there should things go wrong. I think that basically what I am trying to say is that I will stick with the better known brands. Best of luck with yours and thanks for the great videos and playing.

Is there a stock speaker in that Vox?
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michal. Yes, the speaker is stock. Its a Celestion VX12. Traditionally there would be a choice of Celestion Greenbacks or the Alnico Blue speakers. But since Vox have made this amp a 1 speaker amp, instead of the usual twin, they designed and voiced this speaker specifically for this ACs1 model. Apparently 😀. Cheers for watching.

Frankly, I think Supro's wattage ratings are almost bullshyte. They make no sense. They're not Class A, though they are cathode biased. They just have some absurd numbers. I have a "25w" Supro Saturn MKII which I love but I question the wattage of my amp too. Not that wattage is the be-all-end-all of anything, but I think Supro in particular is out to lunch on their ratings.
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have to agree..... I’m not bothered by the weird numbers, because I love the amp..... but yeah, it’s nowhere near the volume of other 25w valve amps.
