It's actually a Submarine Jump, or Sub Jump for short. When you run off an edge while spinning, there's a 10-frame window where Crash can jump in mid-air.

If you die, you wont get the post-level screen with the box count, so you can exit faster. Finishing a level without dying forces you to go through the box count/gem screen, whatever you wanna call it.

If you die after the first Checkpoint. It will Skip the scene where the missed boxes are! You were intended to Break every box without dying.

If you don't die and get all the crates in the level you get a gem, but if you miss some the game shows you how many at the end of the level and it wastes time. If you die you skip that screen entirely. Take a look at 36:28 where there's no checkpoints to die at so he's forced to sit through that animation.

I think he dies after the checkpoint (and not before so Crash doesn't return to the start of the level) to avoid losing time at the end of the level when the unobtained boxes fall on Crash's head.

In deathless runs of levels, the game counts what boxes you missed since in this game you need to break every box without dying to get the gem. When you die, the missed box screen gets skipped.

They're not double jumps. They're submarine jumps. If you spin while running off a ledge, there's a 10-frame window where you can still jump.

Yeah it skips the box breaking animation at the end, it probably saves upwards of a minute. It's also why this is ran on NTSC-U, since in J and PAL you can't skip them in any way
