Game dev and especially design documents tend to be treated with a high level of secrecy (not totally impossible to find some, just rare) so I very much like this kind of content and would love to see the rest of the document.

Well, anything corporate tends to be secret by default (they'll require a reason to release something, not a reason not to.) Also, there isn't usually much flair put into these either (unless the decision has been made to release them after the game is complete) since they're just meant to be internal guidelines for the company.

I feel like some of the unused WOC concepts made it to twinsanity. Such as the idea of neo cortex's daughter and the ice berg lab. Yeah, some of the new character ideas were borderline fanfiction levels of hammy and I don't think Crash Bandicoot of all things needs to have dramatic character dynamics like that. But the idea of Cortex using other planets as experiments and distress to their ecosystems is a solid premise that plays into his scientific ability pretty well. And it's a logical follow-up from Crash 3's time travel premise.

@@luckymouse1988 from my understanding, a GDD is often used as a complimentary material for pitches to publishers/ stakeholders. So some could well be a simple word document for internal purposes, but others may need to be more refined to sell your idea to people who could make it happen.

To be honest, I'm glad a lot of the story concepts presented here didn't make it in, and the Elemental Masks feel more in-tune with the Crash universe than Elli Mental, but she's still okay. However, a lot of the progression sounds more interesting than what we got in The Wrath of Cortex, since one of Wrath's main problems was that it was TOO much the same as before with its linear level design. It seems that some of the ideas from wrath of cortex are in twinsanity, it's like they are splitted into 2 games, that's crazy...

Just having the opportunity to study a professional design document is fantastic. This video teaches a lot through subtext! I love this and would love more. Thank you!

Very Interesting, you can see many ideas that went on to appear in games like twinsanity, the QuoCo idea was probably the most interesting, and it could've affected the lore forever lol

I may be late, but I always wondered if that image of Crash on PS2 from early 2000's, coming from old videogame websites, was actually an image from that Crash Bandicoot Worlds project? images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080818230357/crashbandicoot/pt/images/1/17/Unreleased_PS2_Game_Screenshot.jpg I hope you can shed some light on this! I love your work by the way!

Yes please continue. This is like the video talk version of the cutting room floor! Love knowing what a game was early in development and what changed along the way.

I've never played a Crash game, but this was fascinating, I hope you do more of this kind of thing! I love seeing these peeks behind the curtains of the earliest stages of a game's development.

Videogame design documents are so cool, even if some concepts don't survive the cut, it's sure they will reappear in a next game.

Super glad you voiced this document for us! I don't mind the dryness at all, and would love to hear your opinion on any changed or removed content by the end. I think this is a valuable case study for aspiring game developers.

As a student in Game design, i am FASCINATED by this. I haven't been a huge Crash fan (mainly due to not having a ps1-2 at the time) but it's seriously amazing to have a read through the GDD of a big game like The Wrath Of Cortex. I realized this is structured a lot differently than what i had learned, so please, please, i would LOVE to read through the rest of the document.

Hmm maybe that’s why the 5th level of each section would always be some sort of science/research lab related theme in the official Wrath of Cortex? Because of the original concept? Who knows

Being able to see these early ideas is super interesting, especially the language used to convey them. Short enough to get the point across and still open to how those ideas may change as development progresses. "Pole climbing" with just a ? really got me. At a glance that line feels very simple, but I could totally imagine the discussion that spun out of possibly including this one mechanic. Thank you for sharing this!
