You know the more years go by and I revisit this show, the more I actually side with Debra and think Marie and Frank are the absolute worst. They could have rammed into the living room while the kids were in it, they could have hit Ray and his wife when they were just passing the door, this is properly serious and both of them are not even the slightest bit remorseful or concerned about any of that. Even if they were family, they still trashed someone's home and neither one even says sorry.

First thing he asks is anyone hurt, you can even see a hint of brilliant PTSD acting (the character's wife having been killed by a drunk driver) before the comedy kicks in.

don't think so. Rewatch it, the car crashing into the house are 2 seconds and then its shown from the side blending out the destruction in the middle of the room and the glasses are dirty so the stunt driver isn't visible. Then cut again and they leave the car and show the room which could have been prepped up in the right positions after the former cut.

They could have filmed the actual crash prior to the audience being there and then edited it in later. In post-production, you can make anything look seamless.

So who would be more at fault here Marie for speeding and not using the horn to warn people to get out of the way or is it Frank for not listening to his mechanic so he could get the brakes checked? If this were to happen in real life Marie would probably lose her license. Here's a tip that might help if you ever find yourself in a similar situation where the brakes aren't working or if you're ever driving in snow, put your car into neutral that way the car will stop or at least slow down.

If this were real, bad brakes are not to blame. She was stomping on the gas by mistake. The normal speed of backing out of your driveway is not enough to cross the street, up a lawn and right through a wall.

Not sure about the US, but in Australia it is the responsibility of both the owner and the driver. So as Frank has the car in his name he is responsible for both the insurance and upkeep. Seeing Frank was aware of the faulty brakes he would be in trouble for not replacing those and in even more trouble if it was found to be a contributing factor to the crash. Marie, as the driver, should have asked Frank if he was aware of any issues and checked some things like the lights and tires. Had she known about the brakes, she should have told Frank to get them repaired. Also, as it seems she did know about the brakes being faulty, she would also be at fault. All being told not only do Frank and Marie owe Ray and Debra for the repairs to the house and property but the cat will need to be checked fir roadworthyness

@jonathanbarr9764 Yeah, quite a lot of trouble for both they could get a fine each Marie as the driver and Frank as the owner of the car who didn't replace the brakes. I'm not a lawyer, but I think Marie could get charged with reckless driving if she knew about the brakes, which would mean a fine and depending on her driving history, possibly prison time. Although a judge most likely would give her a suspended sentence due to factors like her age and the fact that she didn't try and flee from the scene. Robert, being a Police Officer should have given Marie a breath test and drug test as well as calling an ambulance to make sure everyone is ok and should get statements from Frank, Marie, Ray and Debra. Also, I stuffed up in my earlier comment, Frank wouldn't be responsible for having insurance, as basic 3rd party insurance is included in your registration. Although I don't think it would include damage to a house.

One funny part is missing is at the end where Frank drives without Marie. Marie runs after him yelling: “COME BACK. I HAVE TO GO TO THE SUPERMARKET.” As if going to the supermarket is still on her mind after what she did.

Everyone is talking about the crash, but what about Ray's reaction at 0:33 when Debra actually agrees to his idea of going upstairs. Anyone who watches the show, knows how rarely that happens, which is why his reaction is so funny. And then it's completely in character for that moment to be ruined once again.... by his parents.

She said the brakes were bad. She did not say the brakes were not working. The brakes might not have been working well enough to slow the car down in time, hint the brakes were bad. It would also depend on the speed of the car.

Ok to anyone curious about if this really happens yes it does. If Frank has current car insurance then Ray files a claim with Franks insurance. Estimators come out and Frank’s insurance eats the cost for Ray to hire a contractor to put the house right. If Frank doesn’t have good insurance then Ray’s homeowners pays the repair costs then sues Frank to recoup the loss. In the meantime the fire department has to come out and inspect the house to determine if there’s structural damage. If there’s not or the house is structurally sound then they just temporarily board up the hole till it’s fixed. If it’s structurally compromised then the family is allowed to get a few things they’ll need and will have to stay with friends or family while the house is likely condemned and scheduled for demolition.

He's right about 90s Plymouths and Dodges. Dad had a 1990 Plymouth Voyager that got rammed at a stop sign in the rear. Barely left a dent and a scuff. Some of the strongest cars ever built in my opinion. I always said he should have kept that van it would be an antique now and probably still going.
