Most periods the subcontinent was divided between many different, often short lived warring Kingdoms. But I guess modern critics such as yourself and *CHARLATANS like Shashi Kapoor* would have done a far better job at reconciling the countless volatile dynamics that was bubbling beneath the surface and which had plagued the subcontinent for more than a millennia *before the British came along.* In other words it would have been no different, if not in a far worse predicament than Africa. Thank god I find this comment. I am also facing this problem, Bcz I read somewhere that. Warren hasting became the 1st governer general of BENGAL. but here it's mention that. Warren Hastings became the 1st general of INDIA. that's make confused me.

Warren Hastings was the first governor general of British India in 1773 or technically we can call him as he had de facto power ! and after that in 1833 the British Parliament passed the Government of India act also know as Charter Act of 1833 which re designated the post of Governor General of India that governor of bengal would be the Governor general of India this is how William Bentick is the First de jury gov general of India ! A game of De facto & de jury that's it

After the Regulating Act of 1833 , the other two provinces were made subordinate to the GG. In that sense , Warren Hastings was the GG of India. , I suppose. The defacto and dejury concept as mentioned by Nishant Kapoor makes sense.
