I just started watching the crash course on philosophy and I love the fun way these videos are designed. I hope that one day, even though not very common in the public eye, crash course could please do a course on the occult, both history and theory/practical. I do understand how this could be a bad move thanks to the ignorant minds of many, maybe you guys could make a separate channel to cover these kinds of topics. Thank you for reading

Thanks for pointing out that the Muslim apocalypse story your presented is from a particular hadith and that Muslims do not consider Hadith as reliable as Qoran (besides, some Hadiths are more reliable than others). As a Muslim I don't belive half of the elements of the story you presented, but this did not bother me: it is crashcourse mythology after all, not religion studies, and we ARE looking for a good story here. On a another subject, I thought the Christian apocalypse includes four "apocalypse horsemen" or something of the kind. Was I mistaken?
@twistedtachyon5877
@twistedtachyon5877 7 жыл бұрын
BartAcaDiouka If you want to look at the Christian account, you'll need to look elsewhere. Heck, most of Revelation isn't about the end of the world (understandable, since that's not what "apocalypse" means in the Greek it was written in). It is about "revealing what is hidden", so, mostly set in the present! And of that, they only mentioned the bit about angels pouring plagues, with some throwaway references to the beast etc. Revelation is an old book written in a dead genre which heavily leans on its culture because of the way it uses imagery. By my mind, unless you already have a decent understanding of the Christian worldview and the resurrection they are expecting, you shouldn't read/investigate Revelation because it will only be confusing. Many Christians make this mistake, though, so I wouldn't blame you...

Just a little revision about islamic apocalypse belief: acc. to islam the universe will be destroyed as a whole, not just the earth, all of planets, systems, galaxies-the all of conceivable physical spaces & places. And the new life (heaven & hell) will be in an other cosmos.

The links of verses that i found from Holy Quran about destroying of universe are below. Especially the last verse of Surah Al-Qasas can be evidence of destroying the universe as a whole. "Everything is bound to perish, save His [eternal] self. With Him rests all judgment; and unto Him shall you all be brought back. " In Arabic 'thing' or 'everything' means that every thing which physically and non-physically exist out of Allah, or we can say the creatured ones. hope to be helpful :) www.kuran.gen.tr/?x=s_main&y=s_middle&kid=33&sid=81 : Surah At-Takwir; the first six verses www.kuran.gen.tr/?x=s_main&y=s_middle&kid=33&sid=82 : Surah Al- Infitar; the first three verses www.kuran.gen.tr/?x=s_main&y=s_middle&kid=33&sid=28 : Surah Al- Qasas; the last verse

You failed to mention something rather significant. The numbers used in the Hebrew/Christian and Islam religions had very specific metaphorical meanings to them. In fact, pretty much everything in those stories was symbolic and not meant to be taken literally. I understand that time constraints make impractical any kind of deeper analysis on most topics, but you could have at least made a comment on that fact in passing, as it's key to avoiding misunderstandings.

@farhaddaeva, Well, In Iran, courses are more interested in the philosophical side of the religion instead of stories that may or may not be true as they are usually based on some Hadith written somewhere by someone. To be honest, these stories are nice and all for kids, but really, doesn't matter much. Unless you are watching a Crash Course Mythology :) I wonder why there wasn't anything about Rostam or other late Persian stories/heroes till now. :/

I might be remembering things wrong, but doesn't Buddhism have no concept of "hell/eternal torture"? It's just one big cycle of Samsara where the soul gets reincarnated on a higher (animal/human) or lower (plants/grass) level based on their deeds in the previous life?

This was actually very interesting. Fascinating religious takes on the apocalypse. People now a days denounce anything with the word religion into it. But religion had shaped so much of our history, and still plays a significant part of in our cultures and world. And it's much more than violence and delusions that people often take it for.

Ash O I don't think that matters when you are talking about geography. The Middle East is the Middle East of Asia. Because Christianity became so popular in the western world, it became classified wrongly as a western religion.
@twistedtachyon5877
@twistedtachyon5877 7 жыл бұрын
Awkward, since the popularity of the Abrahamic tradition in the West makes the West want to claim it as their own. And, since pop culture has been riffing on it fir centuries, there is even a certain argument for it, though no one likes "we misunderstand some things, so now it's ours" as an argument. Best example? "Apocalypse" is a term referring to a kind of ancient literature where "hidden mysteries" or the "true nature" of reality are revealed by imagery, symbolism, and picture language. But revelation (get it? Because it's revealing something unintuitive through imagery like beasts and dragons?) is the only one we're still familiar with in the West, and it talks about the final judgement, so when people made stories about it they referenced it. Now, derivative stories are as powerful mythologically as the old myths, written for another culture, so they get mixed up in common knowledge. Before you know it, BAM. Apocalypse and Armageddon are synonyms in English and the whole thing gets even more confusing.

I liked the idea of Allah tipping the scales in a person's favours if they begged for mercy and honestly meant it. As if a person, faced with the likelihood of suffering from eternal torment, after begging for mercy and being granted it would ever say "yeah, but well, you know, I wasn't being serious."

So Jesus' reign after he slayed the monster is the last chance you have before everything went to nothingness but yes, he also said that there are people who will be freed from the hell fire after temporary punishment there and only those the most vile and dark at heart will be reside in hell for eternity can't remember the hadid though it was 7 years ago in high school

One important note regarding the end of Revelation: St. John's description doesn't simply end with the world smoldering and utterly destroyed. Rather, the climax and culmination of the entire book are found in the last two chapters which describe the restoration of all things in the new creation, the final coming together of Heaven and earth in the Kingdom of God, the end of suffering and death, and the unending reign of God into eternity.

What this video seems to fail to mention is that Apocalypse means "lifting the veil," or revelation. It was written with a lot of imagery to hide its true meaning from the pagans. When saint John wrote the Apocalypse, there was a persecution and the main purpose of his book was to give christians the hope that all these persecutions will end and that Christ will be victorious. That's why Rome is called "Babylon the Great", or that the Beast, who is really the Roman Empire, has a number, 666, instead of being called Nero. You can't read the Apocalypse of saint John litteraly without losing its true meaning.
@varana
@varana 7 жыл бұрын
But that is so well hidden that for almost two thousand years, no one cared about that contemporary meaning, and instead read it as the end of the world. Esp. because Christ didn't return soon, like John most probably assumed, and the whole thing lost much of its meaning. After all, this is not theology but mythology. And as far as stories go, the "end of the world" interpretation was _far_ more influential than any historic reading of the text.
@kightsun
@kightsun 7 жыл бұрын
The problem is the fact that there are various interpretations isn't brought up in the video, makes the video incomplete and sort of misleading, because the futurism understanding WASNT the most prevalent for most of history, it was partial preterism or historicism that was usually taught and the future end of the world interpretation only became the most popular in the 19th century when a presbyterian invented dispensationalism

In Spanish, the book of revelation is most commonly called the book of apocalypse
@Pfhorrest
@Pfhorrest 7 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking, AN apocalypse is a revelation: "apocalypse" is Greek for "uncovering", as in, "revealing". It just so happens that there was a particularly famous revelation in Christian mythology, namely that one in the Book of Revelations, where God revealed to John how the world was going to end. So THE revelation (or in Greek, the apocalypse) came to mean that specific thing that was revealed that one super important time, namely, how the world will end.

And most of the Book of Revelation (including the part quoted in the video) isn't even about the end of the world, its about judgment of Israel and Rome.

Here's a fun fact: in biblical talk "forty" doesn't actually mean "40" it just means "a lot" - so during the flood when it rained for "40 days and 40 nights" it just meant that it rained a lot and they didn't keep track.

there is some stuff you forgot in the Muslim part : 1 - an animal that speaks in human languish (i have no idea what that means) telling people wither they are good or bad 2 - after all the faithful are dead a hug smoke covers the sky and a giant fire appears in el yaman

Eh, without discussing subjugation and the ways subjugated groups respond to oppression you miss the meaning of all four. I am pretty disappointed that this video never mentioned the reason for the myths. Taking them at face value is pretty lame and undercuts the value and narrative of the people who wrote these stories. Why even include them without exposition?

pdwd88 Best comment. For a show purporting to explore mythology as powerful stories to reveal something about people, totally ignoring the nature of the story and failing to include the things its historical audience thought were important really misses the point. What educational value did this video have, exactly? But hey, cool story, bro!

Can one of you two fill me in? I don't know what you're referring to, but I'm interested to know. I'm presuming it's along the lines of the faith being used to control the populace, e.g. if you leave our religion you will become savages and the world will end and all will die horribly etc etc, therefore you must remain a model citizen by doing what we say?

For Islamic One... great on you to explain the apocalypse almost right according to source material.. of course there are some misinterpretation like Isa being ascended again (He will face death that time), forgot to mention about the smoke/fog that will kill all believers so they don't taste the destruction, the description of Israfils' horn purposes and also resurrected to earth for judgement (Mahsyar is a different dimension). Thumbs up for the effort!

If anyone is interested in reading any of the major religious texts I was able to get a free Bible, Qu'ran and various other books online for free by approaching religious and non profit groups. All of which were high quality and beautifully illustrated works There are many groups out there dedicated to teaching their religion to those interested for free. My closest Mosque for instance is well over an hour away so when I wanted to learn about Islam I made and cultivated close friendships with professors and Imams with folks online. Do be careful though - especially with Islam there are many people out there who have dedicated their lives to either demonizing or radicalizing it so make sure the people who are teaching you have no motivation other than the spread of their gospel. Although I am now atheist/agnostic I spent about two years practicing each of the five major religions and each comes with incredible beauty and meaningful wisdom. Good luck on your journey.

He only discussed part of the book of Revelation. The seven bowls are from chapter 16. The Dragon is introduced in chapter 12, and the two beasts in chapter 13, v1 the beast out of the sea, v11 the beast out of the earth. The first beast represents power and evil authority, and the second beast represents deception and propaganda in service of the first beast - both are servants of the dragon, who Mike rightly said is the devil. For the few minutes he spent on it, I'd say that's pretty decent.
