The Louisiana Rebellion of 1811: Crash Course Black American History #12

Күн бұрынUprisings of enslaved people in the United States were not uncommon, and they had a big influence on how the institution of slavery evolved. One uprising that gets less attention, historically, is the German Coast Uprising that took place in Louisiana in 1811. A group of enslaved people rebelled, and the after-effects would be felt in Louisiana and throughout the nation for decades.

In high school, we pretty much spent a whole semester in AP American history on everything up to 1776. Then we went from 1776 to Manifest Destiny in about a week and spent the rest of the semester going from there to just short of the Great Depression. Then boom, that was the end of my US history lesson in my advanced placement class. It was for college credit too, and I didn't have to take any more history classes. Needless to say, I've never heard of this event.

That's a stereotype that all slaves were submissive and docile. Resistance took many forms.

It's wild that I live less than an hour from the Destrehan Plantation (Referred above as the Andre Plantation it was renamed when another family took possession of it) and was literally never told this in school.

I think any slave revolt was sending a message to the rest of the country that slavery was wrong. So in that regard, yes, it’s a success. Just as today, we will continue to resist the wrongs of racism. Thanks for another great video on history of Africans in America!!!!!

I love these lesser known events of black American History. Thank you, sir! I wonder how much of its lesser known status comes from being far from the epicenter (Louisiana vs. South Carolina or Virginia) or its close proximity to the War of 1812 taking over the national narrative (also lost in the shuffle is the Georgia militia's invasion of Spanish Florida). Great video again!

The point you make about success being overrated is something I've never thought about before, and it really puts into the perspective different forms of protest today. I always knew rebellions and protests mattered even when they fail, but now I better understand why they do.

Stono, this one, and Nat Turner are probably the three largest ones. The Nat turner one I find most interesting.

American Uprising by Daniel Rasmussen is an excellent book about this revolt. The Andry plantation was a beautiful.
