In which John Green teaches you where American politicians come from. In the beginning, soon after the US constitution was adopted, politics were pretty non-existent. George Washington was elected president with no opposition, everything was new and exciting, and everyone just got along. For several months. Then the contentious debate about the nature of the United States began, and it continues to this day. Washington and his lackey/handler Alexander Hamilton pursued an elitist program of federalism. They attempted to strengthen the central government, create a strong nation-state, and leave less of the governance to the states, They wanted to create debt, encourage manufacturing, and really modernize the new nation/ The opposition, creatively known as the anti-federalists, wanted to build some kind of agrarian pseudo-paradise where every (white) man could have his own farm, and live a free, self-reliant life. The founding father who epitomized this view was Thomas Jefferson. By the time Adams became president, the anti-federalists had gotten the memo about how alienating a name like anti-federalist can be. It's so much more appealing to voters if your party is for something rather than being defined by what you're against, you know? In any case, Jefferson and his acolytes changed their name to the Democratic-Republican Party, which covered a lot of bases, and proceeded to protest nearly everything Adams did. Lest you think this week is all boring politics, you'll be thrilled to hear this episode has a Whiskey Rebellion, a Quasi-War, anti-French sentiment, some controversial treaties, and something called the XYZ Affair, which sounds very exciting. Learn all about it this week with John Green.
Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. Much of America's politics came from debates between democratic republican Thomas Jefferson and federalist Alexander Hamilton: www.commonlit.org/texts/alexa...
While Jefferson would go on to become president, Hamilton heavily influenced President George Washington who set many American political ideals in his farewell address that Hamilton helped craft: www.commonlit.org/texts/washi...

Hamilton could legally be president. There was an section in the constitution that said anyone who was in the US at the time the constitution could become president. So he could have become president if he hadn't been shot, published a pamphlet about having an affair, and if his son hadn't died. There were a few things in the way of him becoming president.

The more I learn about Thomas Jefferson the more conflicted a character he seems to me to be. He loved democracy and egalitarianism (as do I), but he was a VERY wealthy slave owner. Anyone want to recommend a good biography on Jefferson? There must be a dozen.
@jfridy
@jfridy 10 жыл бұрын
Oh, more than that. I would look at his autobiography, the book American Sphinx by Ellis, and is you REALLY want to dig in, Dumas Malone's 6 Volume biography. Also if you want a odd angle, check The Jefferson Bible: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth. In this Jefferson, a Deist, tried to "combine the biographical information about Jesus' life from all four gospels into one version, and he took out the supernatural events." He did this to try to distill the focus of Jesus' teachings. Needless to say, it's an unusual and somewhat controversial work.
@howarthe1
@howarthe1 10 жыл бұрын
Dreamcastpowa I disagree. Jefferson was not "smart enough to know… [slaves] shouldn't be freed right now." Everyone who held such a view was a damn fool. Slaves should have been freed immediately.
@howarthe1
@howarthe1 10 жыл бұрын
I agree that many people based their opinion that the slaves should not be free on their own experiences and the experiences of Santo Domingo. I also agree that slavery was important and that abolition was messy, but it was still right and good and long over due.
@Zeejoey
@Zeejoey 10 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Fridy I must disagree. While you are essentially correct that slavery was the great compromise, there was nothing essential about kicking it down the road (especially after the Constitution had been ratified). While abolition would have been a difficult and divisive thing, it only became more so over time. The southern economy was less reliant on slavery than they would be later on, and the longer that system was in place the more difficult it became to overcome. While we can never know for sure, it is almost certain that abolition would have been far easier to implement in the 1790's than it was in the 1860's. I agree that our Founding Fathers were products of their time, and everything is now judged by hindsight. Still, it makes no sense to ignore hindsight. We can no more say that the great compromise was a necessary choice than say that the trail of tears was a necessary choice. While this idea of necessity justified the compromise at the time, we ought to learn from the ultimate failures of that sort of compromise (assuming we agree that the Civil War ultimately marks the great compromise as a failure). In a world that enables and incentivizes certain evils, we will trend further towards rather than away from those evils.

But Southern States repeatedly said they needed slavery to be legal or they would not join. They said they would leave the union over taxes and tariffs, much less property seizure, which is what it would have been seen as. The demanded that slaves be counted as 3/5ths of a citizen just so they could keep up with representative strength in the House. I'm not saying it wouldn't have been easier to attempt to implement logistically, but it would have led to the South leaving, though at that period it might have avoided a war, just leaving two separate nations, and probably less hostile ones than later. Asking the wealthy aristocracy to give up their labor source and symbol of power is a hard sell, especially since they had just finished a war where keeping their property safe from the government was seen as part of the reason for fighting.

Hamilton: Thomas [Jefferson]. That was a real nice declaration Welcome to the present, we’re running a real nation Would you like to join us, or stay mellow Doin’ whatever the hell it is you do in Monticello? If we assume the debts, the union gets A new line of credit, a financial diuretic How do you not get it? If we’re aggressive and competitive The union gets a boost. You’d rather give it a sedative?

I know I'm a little late to the game, but I'm a high school drop out who's always loved knowledge except when his teachers were trying to share it with him. I found a few lecturers really interesting when I was in school but I never cared for the part where i was expected to read stuff then answer questions and receive a grade. I come from an IV league family and they were really stoked about this. I've now watched Crash Course World History 1 and 2 and have started on US History. This puts compendium of the human story into a succinct, quasi linear, and thought provoking enough narrative that I feel I can begin studying history more in depth on my own with out getting lost, and I have. It's not like I haven't tried to educate myself with documentaries and visits to museums and online texts, or my favorite; the inaccurate Hollywood movie, but the fast pace and sparkly attractive colors of Thought Bubble are just my speed.Thanks guys! Also Mr. Green you're one of the only Humans I've ever encountered that can so easily and warmly smile without actually using his mouth in said facial activity. It took me till this episode to notice you do that. You smile with your whole face, sans your mouth. How does that happen? Also your good at history. Just wanted to say thank you!
