No, he did succeeed. he got an herb that grants him immortality. But he realized that it wasn't him who should be remembered forever, but what he had accomplished. he later went back to get the herb again, but never ate it.

actually, he gone home and see his Babylon gate and realizes this what makes him immortal, his works, his duties, his treasures. this became one of the ideals of kings after him. They strive for immortality by carving their names through out history by means of what they have accomplished. The idea that he has pass down to other kings is what makes him immortal. even over 4500 years later.

I'm a Sumerologist and just want to clear a few things up: 1) it's called "Sumer", not "Sumeria" 2) The oldest Gilgamesh story in text form we have is from ca. 2700 BCE; also, the Sumerian Gilgamesh (semiticised from Bilgames) is a different collection of stories than the later Babylonian ones, with a very different emphasis. 3) The 2/3 deity thing can be calculated when considering that his father, Lugalbanda, is also of divine descent (Sun god). 4) It's a cedar forest that Gilgamesh and Enkidu wander into to kill the guardian of the forest. They did that because Gilgamesh wanted the wood, as Mesopotamia is more or less resources-free. 5) The reason Shamash helps is because he is related to Gilgamesh. 6) Siduri is not the goddess of beer and wisdom. That would be Ninkasi. 7) Lovely choice of images, but from a professional perspective it's all a bit of a jumble. 8) You are forgetting the beginning and the end. Gilgamesh in the Standard Babylonian version begins, after the beautiful words "He Who Saw the Deep", with a description of the city of Uruk, particularly its wall and quarters and gardens. At the end, when he returns from Ūta-napištim, he is accompanied by the ferryman. They arrive at Uruk, and Gilgamesh is proud to show the foreigner his city, and the same words are used. It's the focus on what man can achieve if he is okay with being, well, man. This is also echoed in Siduri's words to Gilgamesh, reminding him of the things that are human: falling in love, laughing, raising a child and living on forever through your work and offspring. This is the first of your videos that I am watching, and besides for the few points up there, I really enjoyed it! It's wonderful to know that the love of mythology has not died out yet :) I would be interested in your take on Adapa and the South Wind.

@@v40idrifter22 i didnt mean the Marble look at what the wiki says if you ask me ,,Grinding at the laws of space with its power, it creates a rip in space...'' really sounds like reality destroying and if you read more you will find more evidence of its power to warp and destroy space and so reality. ,,It cannot be said that what the blade cuts down is limited simply to "the enemy" as it is not a matter of aiming it, and it is impossible to even discuss as to whether it will hit its target or the practicality of the force behind it. Grinding at the laws of space with its power, it creates a rip in space that extends from not only the earth but also to the sky and atmosphere. It is a crack that distorts space to pierce the very nature of the World itself to show the "Truth." All that uses the cut space as a foundation is swallowed and crushed by the void, and the dazzling light only continues to grow as it continues to complete the destruction. Its use in a fight is not something that can be called a battle, but rather the wrath of nature itself.''

I read a different moral. Instead of just realizing his limitations, the moral is that his eternal life was found in the legacy he left. Throughout the story, there are references to leaving a mark on a brick wall. This is symbolic of leaving a legacy. So while Gilgamesh may not have found literal eternal life, he found it in his story being passed on.

Didn't mention that Gilgamesh didn't want to kill Humbaba. Didn't mention that Gilgamesh insulted Ishtar and that's why the whole bull scene happened. No mentions of the many dreams in this story that tell the future. Didn't mention that Enkidu told Gilgamesh that immortality was not his destiny. I understand that not everything can be covered in these episodes but all of these things are important to the story and could be mentioned in passing.

You missed the point that Gilgamesh inscribed his travels upon the stone tablets to share his wisdom with his people. Therefore, he was willing to be vulnerable about his mistakes along the way in order to teach his people. In that way, he is a hero. You are assuming he didn't listen to Shamash nor listen to Siduri, that he didn't learn from his mistake in refusing the union with the goddess, but by writing it down, he is acknowledging their guidance. He became a hero through reflection...as we all do.

He was especially known for exploiting the King’s right to sex with all subordinate women. “Gilgamesh does not leave a daughter to [her family] nor the maiden to the warrior, nor the wife to her husband.” (It’s good to be the King of Ur, apparently) In desperation, they appealed to the gods to get him off their back and their wives. This, then, is an ancient story about good government, as well as a lesson for humanity on how to live in the world. It suggests that the key to being both a good king and a good man is to have a sense of limits, especially sexual. All political leaders should read it!

It's not really surprising actually. Alexander the Great caused a huge influence on the culture of the Middle East and India during his campaigns, then when he returned home he brought their culture back. Art history shows massive changes in Greek and Indian styles from that point on. Not to say he was the sole cause of exchange, but he certainly made waves compared to the trickle down the silk road at the time.

Gilgamesh, a King at Uruk. He tormented his subjects, he made them angry. They cried out allowed; "Send us a companion for our king!" "Spare us from his madness." Enkidu, a wild man from the forest entered the city. They fought in the temple, they fought in the streets. Gilgamesh defeated Enkidu. They became great friends. Gilgamesh and Enkidu at Uruk. The new friends went out into the desert together where the Great Bull of Heaven was killing men by the heavens. Enkidu caught the bull by the tail, Gilgamesh struck him with his sword. They were victorious but Enkidu fell to the ground, struck down by the gods and Gilgamesh wept bitter tears, saying; "He who was my companion through hardship and adventure is gone forever." -Jean Luc Picard.

He rejects Ishtar because she had an habit of not being faithful, and cursing and killing her spouses. Also, beer was one of the greatest technological advancements of Summery, being considered one of the reasons humans started to settle and create civilizations, one of the first reasons for widespread agriculture. It's not hard to see why, in that context, it would be associated with wisdom.

It would be nice to mention that Gilgamesh rejected Ishtar because A) people who love her often experience disaster...usually at Ishtar's own hand b) Enkidu and Gilgamesh were lovers. which really should be A, but ya know
