Tough day on the bike at the 2023 Barry Roubaix. This was the 62 mile Wave 1 race. Only 5.6 miles into a 64 mile race I got caught behind a rider that unexpectedly braked and within a second I was on the ground.
The beginning of the race had several sketchy parts that I've highlighted in this video. What seemed to be a theme were riders often braking too much for what appeared no reason. I'm assuming everyone felt the tension and nervousness of the bunch and after a few close calls were on the brakes even more. In my incident, the rider in front of me grabbed a bunch of brakes all of a sudden that I had no time to react. I hit his back wheel and frame that kicked out my front wheel and I was on the ground immediately. Unfortunately several riders were also caught up in the mix but it appears everyone was at least able to continue.
I was frustrated looking back at the video realizing there was no one in front of him and I can't understand why he felt he needed to brake so aggressively. Unfortunately I couldn't stop in time and I had my first ever gravel crash. What I didn't realize at the time is that I had fractured a rib, cracked my helmet with a likely concussion and had road rash from my ankle to shoulder.
I collected all my gear and realized my cockpit was a mess from the crash. I grabbed my multi tool and straightened the handlebars, wheel and shifters the best I could. I regrouped myself and continued on to see if I could. I wasn't able to move my right shifter up so that remained significantly lower than my left. I could hear my front rotor was rubbing a bit as well. I was in pain but thought I could continue so I did. After the initial shock wore off the pain settled in and I knew I was more messed up than I originally thought. I wasn't able to stand for the remainder of race due to pain so I had to grind out everything seated. To make matters worse I ran out of water and was quite dehydrated, but was just able to make it to the finish yet beaten and battered.

Ouch! Sorry to see this, heck of a job to pick yourself up and finish especially considering you had about 56 miles to go. Kudos!

Thanks. I redeemed myself this year (2024) and had a much better and safer race with no crashes!

Solid commitment to pick everything up and finish the full distance. I was in that front group of wave 2 that you jumped onto as we went by. Our start was a lot less chaotic than yours but expectedly so.

Thanks. Yeah, I was surprised how much more controlled and enjoyable Wave 2 was. I'd much prefer to race like that.

Glad that you are ok. It was fun race. We did 18 tandem with daughter and had 5th of 13. You were going 26mph when it happened, scary plus so many other scary moments.

I agree, strange behavior from the cyclist in front of you. Tough to react in time for even experienced cyclists when someone brakes like that. What's scary is that you rode the rest of the race with a concussion and a helmet that wouldn't have protected you if you can been unlucky and fallen again.

Ugh. Was hoping the 62(5) mi was going to be at least a little cleaner than 36mi. Looks like that wasn't the case. I'm going to sound like a curmudgeon, but way too many people with more fitness than sense/skill this year. Zwift has numerous people out of practice on riding outdoors. People not calling out obstacles/or being smooth and predictable. Some friends of mine made fun of my earlier races this year where I wasn't following wheels very well, but the truth is I don't trust a majority of the people this year. The sport is growing; which is great to see, but there is numerous people that are severely lacking experience. This race is too big not to have a "gated" wave 1. Even off the start line in your wave their were casuals that were lined up early not even going 20mph becoming a road block who had no aspirations of even a top 200 finish. I'm not trying to be elitist either. I just want the races to be safer.

That's really tough to watch. Eventually it happens to all of us. Sorry if I am being captain obvious here (feel free to tell me to pound sand), but you should have been in the drops with that sort of twitchy/tight/fast group dynamic on sketchy terrain. In this case, your fingers might even have been on the brake levers for instantaneous reaction time. Coming from a MTB background myself, it took some hard knocks to realize that it is much safer to be in drops on downhills, sprints, and twitchy group dynamics. (for sprinting it is less for braking and more to protect your bars from getting sniped by another rider getting too close; for downhills, to prevent an unplanned bump from throwing your hands forward off the hoods). Or alternatively, if you are going to be on the hoods, need to keep greater follow distance at the risk of other riders 'filling in' in front of you, which ironically, perpetuates the sketchiness cycle.

I was on the brakes! I don't ride in the drops ever and it wouldn't have made a difference. There is no reason to break check like he did at 30 mph when there is huge gap in front of him. There was literally at least 2+ bike lengths of open space in front of him. I'm not only watching the rider directly in front of me, but also what's in front of him and there was nothing. I am very comfortable on the hoods and remain on the hoods even through bumpy downhill singletrack. However, I cover the breaks 100% of the time (with 2 fingers) while in a group or on sketchy terrain. I come from a MTB background so always being ready to break is natural to me. Also, I've never had my hands get "bumped" off the hoods even hitting pot holes and braking bumps at high speeds. I clasp the hoods with 2 finders on the brake and 2 finders underneath. It's very secure. Absolutely I will provide myself more of a reactionary gap going forward, I simply can not trust others to my safety.

@@mi-xc Same for me as well. On gravel I'm on the hoods covering my brakes. I think I have small hands, because trying to reach the brakes from the drops it pretty hard for me to do. I've been trying to figure out why the flared out drop bars are so popular when you can't reach the brakes, but maybe that's just me. I do have aero bars, but that's for when I'm all alone. So I'm usually never in the drops.

@@adamsalvo3767 , same I’ve got relatively small hands and the brakes in the drops are so difficult to reach, even when adjusted in.

@@mi-xc If you rear end someone...it's likely on you, not the rider in front of you who is anticipating a problem - like driving in the fog...leave extra distance. My $0.02. You took out some other riders in the process.
@mi-xc
@mi-xc Жыл бұрын
@@davidawassmann; I'm not sure if you're a racer and logically I certainly see your point, but your fog comparison is not accurate. This is not a casual car ride in the fog where time isn't a concern, but rather Wave 1 of an elite cycling competition. This was the front of a "RACE " of 100s of "racers" where it is supposed to be the most advanced and experienced cyclists. Group riding, let alone racing, basic 101 rules are to never slam on your brakes or make sudden movements, particularly as conditions erode and speeds increase. Drafting is an integral part of racing and if you're not doing it you're not competing. There is an inherent level of risk involved in doing so. One must be close to the rider in front of you and there is a mutual understanding and etiquette of being safe. Watch any bike race and you'll see riders with much shorter gaps than I had and anyone who slams on the brakes is going to cause a crash. You simply can't ride/race as you're the only one on the road, you must respect the group dynamics.
