Lyrics:
Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The cars had smashed so hard
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Once there was this girl who
Wouldn't go and change with the girls in the change room
But when they finally made her
They saw birthmarks all over her body
She couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just been there
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
But both girl and boy were glad
Cause one kid had it worse than that
Cause then there was this boy whose
Parents made him come directly home right after school
And when they went to their church
They shook and lurched all over the church floor
He couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just gone there

My best mate passed away a couple of months ago...... this was his favourite tune. First time I've had the guts to play it...... First time I've cried for him.... R.I.P David Neil Harrison. Music is so fucking cathartic.

When this song came out I was 16, and the kids started talking about it in algebra class...and asking each other how it went.... Little did they know I had written it down, memorized it and could sing the song almost the same tone as Brad Roberts. The minute I started singing it, they all screamed. That made my day so much so that I could barely say the words... I wished the 90's were still here, the music was soo wonderfully creative, life seemed more exciting and happier than it is now. People had interests, had ideas, they had a direction, knew where they were going, and what they wanted to do.. It was way easier to find Friends and even Fall in Love. Thank You Crash Test Dummies.. Thank You Brad Roberts and Crew....😁🙏💜💜💜

I'm a dude born in the late 90s who grew up in the 2000s and 2010s. Much of the music I first fell in love with were made in the 90s, but obviously I didn't experience the culture of the decade and its sound; I'm just a music snob. But I've never heard this song until I stumbled on this video by complete accident. I keep coming back to it, and it induces such a nostalgia and a sweet melancholy. There's something special about it; the relatability a lot of us share in the comments I think is a strong symptom of that.

I think I finally get the meaning of this song. The first 2 kids in the video had supportive parents while the 3rd did not. If you pair the lyrics with the video it's about overcoming things, but understanding that some people lack the support. That boy was probably disowned for his part in that play.

Those songs were often lighter then what they likes the first time we heard them. I think it's the magic of this decade (maybe also the 80'). Deep lyrics with light melody.

I'm 64yo and have been lucky with growing up with the 70s and 80s music. In the 90s life priorities didn't allow me to fully appreciate that era new talents and I may have heard this song on the radio, but didn't listen at it as it deserves. Nowdays, with youtube I'm catching up and discovering it and what a masterpiece it is. I can't stop to replay it again and again. Beside the kids stories, it is the music, the voices and harmonies and the rithmn that captivate me. Surely one of the best song I regret missing in the 90s. Who knows maybe I may had the opportunity to see them live back then. Too bad.

To me this is a masterpiece. My reading: young people feeling insecure (1) something unexpectedly hurt their image and self worth (2) something they were born with hurt their image and self worth, so they deflect by hurting the image and self worth of (3) a person who believes differently than the herd. This is a poignant and good song.

So I could not work. I was volunteering in August 2011, I was on my way to teach, and hit by a fully loaded box truck, I am short so the Air bag damaged, my jaw, Stage 3 concussion, still in the 95% of memory, where I had a photographic memory before. Injury to my ankle ignored, and my TMJ is still bad, Concussion, like that I no longer ride a bicyle, motorcycle, or roller skate, but I can still swim. This is one of the best songs of the 1990's. AMEN

Such a simple yet profound lesson - everyone is different, everyone unique, every life sacred. At least that's the lyrical side, which pales in comparison to the music. This song is ALL about the music. Masterpiece!

Some Songs just makes me teary eyed without even trying. This takes me way back to the early 90's I remember when I first heard this song and it's timeless production Despite the lyrics not being complex, it's still a very beautiful song. it just takes me back to the good old days when I was young and happy. when Playing 16 bit games on an NTSC Tv set felt like the best thing in the world. Love from Nigeria.

I was an undergrad in Greece attending summer school at Harvard in the summer of 1994. I bought the CD and had the song playing on repeat. One day I heard a knock on my door. It was the RA (a graduate student). He said, look man, it's a good song but can we take a break from listening to it over and over every freaking day?

Dead on about that last verse and the boy looking back at his parents; the woman is great, how much she conveys with a sneer. When you realize in real life she's probably a punker whose favorite band is the Distillers it's even more impressive. Much pathos in those moments: shades of Neil and Dead Poets Society--to this day one of the most shatteringly tragic things I've ever seen in a film. I had a tyrant of a father, but I stood up to him, and if I hadn't I'd probably be dead too.
