Lyrics:
Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The cars had smashed so hard
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Once there was this girl who
Wouldn't go and change with the girls in the change room
But when they finally made her
They saw birthmarks all over her body
She couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just been there
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
But both girl and boy were glad
Cause one kid had it worse than that
Cause then there was this boy whose
Parents made him come directly home right after school
And when they went to their church
They shook and lurched all over the church floor
He couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just gone there

When this song came out I was 16, and the kids started talking about it in algebra class...and asking each other how it went.... Little did they know I had written it down, memorized it and could sing the song almost the same tone as Brad Roberts. The minute I started singing it, they all screamed. That made my day so much so that I could barely say the words... I wished the 90's were still here, the music was soo wonderfully creative, life seemed more exciting and happier than it is now. People had interests, had ideas, they had a direction, knew where they were going, and what they wanted to do.. It was way easier to find Friends and even Fall in Love. Thank You Crash Test Dummies.. Thank You Brad Roberts and Crew....😁🙏💜💜💜

I think I finally get the meaning of this song. The first 2 kids in the video had supportive parents while the 3rd did not. If you pair the lyrics with the video it's about overcoming things, but understanding that some people lack the support. That boy was probably disowned for his part in that play.

I'm a dude born in the late 90s who grew up in the 2000s and 2010s. Much of the music I first fell in love with were made in the 90s, but obviously I didn't experience the culture of the decade and its sound; I'm just a music snob. But I've never heard this song until I stumbled on this video by complete accident. I keep coming back to it, and it induces such a nostalgia and a sweet melancholy. There's something special about it; the relatability a lot of us share in the comments I think is a strong symptom of that.

You're correct in your observation. By the early 90's the music industry was desperate for new sounds, so they were willing to give a broader range of acts a chance at success. True. The "formulas" they used in the 1980's had dried up, and so the record industry became more willing to spread a wide net for different acts as a means to find "the new sound." The music in the first half of the 90's was far more varied than the decade before or after the 90's. In fact, the music became more narrowed and formulaic even by the late 90's.

To me this is a masterpiece. My reading: young people feeling insecure (1) something unexpectedly hurt their image and self worth (2) something they were born with hurt their image and self worth, so they deflect by hurting the image and self worth of (3) a person who believes differently than the herd. This is a poignant and good song.

I'd be honored if some 90s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by the CRASH TEST DUMMIES, Arms of Angel by SARAH MCLACHLAN, and Long December by the COUNTING CROWS on my YT channel in tribute to a couple of great 90s standards. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace out.

This bring me back to when MTV played videos and how exciting it was to catch one that you wanted to see. Remember when you would watch late at night/early morning and you would catch super strange videos that weren't that popular? Ahhh the good old days...

Totally! Id leave the VHS recording late night to catch those weird, awesome indie bands that werent "cool" to play during main tv time

Some Songs just makes me teary eyed without even trying. This takes me way back to the early 90's I remember when I first heard this song and it's timeless production Despite the lyrics not being complex, it's still a very beautiful song. it just takes me back to the good old days when I was young and happy. when Playing 16 bit games on an NTSC Tv set felt like the best thing in the world. Love from Nigeria.

I miss the 90s. Being individuals was celebrated even if only through song. People had something to aspire to rather than reality stars and influencers.

Disagree. Now you can be whatever you want, even if you're a man and want to be a woman it's ok. Also you can listen to whatever music you want, you don't have to eat the shit the radio and MTV shovels into your mouth.

You ever meet some quirky, eccentric, out the box, "weird" folks that get super excited that you listen to the same sh they do? 🙋 I have a friend who loves this song. Then she was all like do you like boy George too? Me: I mean, I only know karma chameleon. Her: he's so hot 😍🤗. Me: 😕🤭 yeah, I guess, sure. For an older dude. But I think he's also gay but it's whateves🤷🏻‍♀️. Mmm mmmm mmm
