Last year I had to have my 8 year old help me. We were expecting a storm. He helped but not happily at first. Once I showed him how and told him it was like a treasure hunt we had a blast. He even found a salamander. Anyway that's my little potato story, thanks for the great video.

I actually didn't even get my potatoes planted till early June and decided to do it anyway. I don't know yet how they will harvest, of course, but they are growing like crazy! The best time to plant is when you're supposed to. The next best time is when you actually DO it! 😂 Never hurts to try it anyway.

I have not harvested yet, but I will say that one of my three varieties is also starting to die off early, so it's nice to hear that it may be the case this year for a lot of folks, just due to the weird spring /early summer we've had! I planted my pitatoes in June. In Georgia. Yes, thats late. A lot of my garden got planted late due to a death in the family. I had organic potatoes in the pantry sprouting so i decided to plant them anyway. They are growing and im giving them some protection with a shade cloth, so we will see if i get a harvest! Worst case scenario, i dont get potatoes that i didnt expect for this year anyway, best case scenario i have potatoes i didnt expect. 😊

My potatoes died off earlier than I expected this year as well. They never flowered so I had medium to low expectations that I would have anything at all, particularly nothing worth eating. On top of everything else, my potatoes were russets that came from a bag of potatoes from Target that happened to sprout eyes. Anyway... The first plant I pulled up gave me one useable potato which I proceeded to accidentally ruin in the microwave. I have since pulled up the other three plants and got mostly small potatoes - out of poor soil - I did end up cooking them as they didn't look like they would keep. They were delicious!

Always use Black Kow in our mix. Best harvest ever, averaged 10lbs. per pot. Big beautiful potatoes.Years past our harvests were ok, but found that over crowding plants wasn't our friend, competing. Great potatoes! I wonder if they might have been a little bit crowded. I find my potatoes are smaller if I plant too close together. I have filled a five gallon bucket from 8 plants more than once. I usually grow red norland, Yukon gold, or russets. To plant I put the potato in a hole the depth of a spade and barely cover the sprouts with soil. As the potato grows I fill the hole until the dirt is mounded up or hilled. I had my worst year ever last year with potatoes because I planted 12 to 14 plants in the space I normally plant 8 and had small potatoes that barely filled a 2.5 gallon bucket. Other than being crowded the potatoes were grown the same as always. Luke, I hope you don’t mind me sharing my 2 cents. You grow such an amazing garden every year.

Hi Luke, I was wondering if you would consider selling seed potatoes in your online store. I was going to order some from Tractor supply as they have lots of varieties but was very disappointed to find out I could not have them delivered to my area, so I ended up having to settle for planting some unspecified Russet potatoes from Kroger. The foliage is really massive to the point that I need to prop it up and I see no signs of it dying off yet. I'm growing them in a box so have no idea what kind of harvest I'll get. I hope they are not little tiny ones or rotten. I do have a hole in the bottom of the box for water to drain out. If you do decide to carry seed potatoes I really would like to get some nice red skin potatoes, a purple variety, and a nice Russet baking potato variety. I recently got one of my two orders of seeds from your big 50% off sale and am looking forward to trying them out!

2022 was my first time growing potatoes. Grew in 7 gallon black grow bags, also a first. Overwatered and underfed. Got a few decent sized potatoes but mostly small ones. The best part was pouring the bags out into a wheelbarrow and watching my two youngest grand daughters pick them out. They still talk about how fun it was. 2023 I planted Russets and a gold variety bought from our co-op store.. 13 seven gallon bags and five hard sided ten gallon pots. I also added blood and bone meat to the soil and side dressed with Garden Tone later. We harvested one bag for new potatoes a month ago and they were good. Couple days ago harvested fro more bags and got larger potatoes as well as so small ones. In a week or two we’ll harvest the rest. Looking forward to seeing what comes out of the ten gallon pots. Would be nice if the grandkids could find some really big ones. Here in Lawrence Ks I think we’re in zone 6 a or just touching 6b.

@@shirleyk623 I’ll definitely try a mustard cover crop, and maybe a sorghum sedan grass cover crop next year as well because I know there’s bad nematodes there that got my okra. I don’t think these are wire worms though. These are large craters that are on average the size of a pencil eraser or bigger. They aren’t deep either. They’re shallow enough to remove with a potato peeler. Only thing I could think of was grub worm because they have large mouths and we found them in that bed.

I just cant believe how they have access to just such a large variety of fruits , trees and plants. Feels like they live in paradise. Fresh produce right on their door step , surrounded by nature and enjoyed together in a close knit family and community! All the money in the world cant buy what they have.

Mine have been growing so tall! Unfortunately, the storms we got last week, really trampled them down. I just hilled them up and trellised them. Now they are bouncing back nicely!

Need a potato rake or a small garden rake to help harvest potatoes. Makes it much easier.

I feel so much better after seeing this. Mine have almost completely died back and I was debating whether or not to pull them. I’m going to go ahead. Maybe I’ll get a second planting in. We have plenty of time before first frost. 🎉🎉🎉 If all my flowers on the tomato plants develop, we’ll have a bumper crop. First year EVER that I’ve got healthy vines on both watermelon and cantaloupe. Grapes are gorgeous as well.

I think you may have harvested the second batch too soon. The plants still had life that could have allowed those potatoes to grow bigger.

The Norfolks had greener tops. Do you think if you'd have given them another 2-3 weeks you'd have gotten bigger spuds? (I do personally enjoy smaller ones, and don't grow for storage).

Plants are maturing early this year. The onions started tipping and that normally happens in August. Best were Red Pontiacs we grew in more clay like loam. They were huge. They née nitrogen to start them off and phosphorus and potash along with even water while tubers are forming.

Tha smaller potatoes are great for pressure canning. Don’t precook them . Just clean them put them in cleaned canning jars. Pour boiling water over them, and and pressure can them according to canning times in your book. From Ontario Canada

I have tried Yukon gems two years in a row and I'm underwhelmed. It just doesn't perform well here in my setup and climate I guess, so I'm giving up on that one. I'm having much better results from purple viking and russet burbank, but jury is still out on the German butterball and kennebec, fingers crossed!

I saw at one time, that potato plants were to be cut out and then two weeks later, they would be pulled up. This is not necessary, to leave them in the ground for two weeks after plants are cut or dead? Great videos and thanks for posting them!
