Wood needs to work on his feet. You can't box with your hands down and stand and trade at mid- or close-range. Warrington almost had him and would have done if he'd been a little more controlled in his aggression and a little smarter with the knock down - face the referee! But it was a great fight all the same and both men deserve a world of credit.

Always outnumbered, never outgunned! Leigh Wood/Robin Hood shifting between the trees sharpshooting until he's the last man standing. Nottingham's finest. He actually fights like Forest play, dont have the ball, under the cosh, score on the counter. Hard to watch at times. I also love Josh Warrington, he's been stiffed a few times by officials but even if he'd had the minute, can't help feeling that would have played into Wood's plan 2nd half of fight, more gaps appearing and since he'd switched from southpaw things were steadying.

The stoppage seemed a bit odd, but it's the fighter's fault. You don't have your back to the referee while he's counting. He can(and he did) interpret that as a sign of mental confusion, not safe to be allowed to fight anymore. It was right at the end of the round, so the decision is debatable, but that's boxing.

Ref followed the rules..either Warrington dropped a clanger or his head was as gone as his legs were...only had to face the Ref soon as he got up and be checked could have got on the stool immediately afterwards and perhaps recovered...gave the Ref no option but to wave it off....suspect getting dropped on bell added to his head being gone in the moment...Personally think he got up purely on instinct and reacted to the bell and staggered to corner...shame he didn't just face the Ref...gave Ref no option but to wave it off

Cracking fight from start to finish, I thought Wood really struggled to find his rhythm, but a lot of that was down to just how explosive and dangerous Josh was boxing, mixing up his punches from body to head beautifully. But maybe just started to leave himself open the more tired he got and then BANG Wood catches him sweet, followed by a fight ending combo of delicious punches to the head and chin. Spectacular finish and end to a tremendous fight. Both guys deserve a lot of respect.

Personally I think the fight was stopped because of the amount of big shots Warrington took to the head in rapid succession. Had Warrington taken a knee after getting caught with the first hit, he might've been able to wait out the 8 count and go back to his corner. But instead he kept fighting, and took 4 more shots to the chin and temple. His brain got rocked 5 times in the span of 3 seconds. Repeated concussions in a short period are much more likely to cause brain bleeding than one single big shot KO
@billwhite9703

was stopped b/c he made his way to the corner with Jelly Legs, If he had just stayed where he was to take the count while allowing his head to clear, I don't think it would have been stopped b/c the bell had already rang to end the round and he would have been more stable going to the corner and so maybe allowed to come out for next round

Something to note on the close was Wood remained calm when he clipped him with the first shot on the jaw…he wasn’t wild. That allowed him to see clearly the next two button shots, both which were perfect laser targeted punches. That’s what won him the fight. The guy was hurt bad. That said…I don’t think the ref should have stopped it. The bell had rang, the guy got up. He had a minute to recover. Not a terrible stoppage. But I don’t think it should have been done.

@@gerardvessey4112 why would that matter? Is that a automatic DQ? If so, I’m not aware of it. I also don’t know if this fight was you can’t be saved by the bell. If that was in play, but he got up, as he did, before the 10 count, which he clearly did, then to my mind, he was okay to continue, unless he quit. I didn’t hear anything about his corner saying he was done…so in my mind, the ref pulled the trigger a little early. Arguably, he was winning the fight. A championship fight. By your thinking when Wilder laid out Fury, the ref should have stopped that fight. We know that Wilder was losing that fight, without the knock downs he definitely loses that fight on the cards. But those two knockdowns got him a draw. That was the difference in the next two fights that probably don’t happen if the fight was stopped. This guy beat the count. The round was over. He deserved the chance to start the next round…imo.

Fair play to Warrington for getting up after getting dropped like that. I’ve always rated his heart, but his power has never been enough to be a get out of jail card, unlike Wood who keeps that KO power late on. Great finish and great fight.

He Warrington wasn`t going to be able to defend himself if the ref had allowed it to carry on he would have sustained life changing injuries the ref was quite correct under no circumstances would a mere 10 seconds have been enough for him to recover

Brit refs are notorious “quick stoppage” refs. But on this occasion Warrington pretty much gave the ref no option but to stop it. He turned his bk on the ref n walked to his corner on jelly legs when knocked down but even then the ref didn’t stop it, n then Warrington carried on letting the ref count with his bk STILL turned. As Warrington was ahead on points n it was the end of the round he probably should have let him see if he cud recover n come out for the nxt round. But although I hate bad stoppages this isn’t no bad stoppage at the same level as Froch-Groves 1.

Leigh Wood is a warrior & inspirational to any fighter, or indeed any man, when it comes to not giving up. BUT, to me that stoppage was premature. Josh was up on the count of 2-3, he stabilised himself & began to talk to his corner (they were on the apron as the bell had gone for the end of the round) and he turns to face the ref on the count of 8 and the ref is already waving it off. He's completely lucid. A fighter is supposed to be ready to fight by the count of 10, why is it getting waved on 8 when he had already been up for a few seconds and had stabilised himself? To me it's very controversial but it sets up a great rematch!
@alexreid4131
@alexreid4131 10 ай бұрын
Respectfully disagree with that assessment. You have to show the ref that you are able AND willing to carry on. You can't have your hands on the ropes with your back to the ref to the count of 8. It just doesn't convince the ref at all that you want to carry on. It certainly didn't look like Josh wanted to continue and indeed he didn't argue with the ref immediately when the ref waived it off. I understand what you are saying but due to what I've outlined above I disagree that the stoppage was premature. Great scrap regardless.
@Eric-qm5xw
@Eric-qm5xw 10 ай бұрын
He was not lucid ..his legs were gone why did he go stagger over to the corner, ya take the count and look into the eyes of the ref and ready yourself for re enter the battlefield. It’s the heart of the fighter to pop back up so quickly but certainly not the correct decision…ya take the count.

All about money isn't it? They know if there is a controversial finish they'll be calls for a rematch so they can run it again. Clear corruption I think.
@Chris_Andre_Boxing
@Chris_Andre_Boxing 10 ай бұрын
@@Eric-qm5xw he staggered because he was hurt, but bear in mind he got up at 2-3. Many fighters are a bit wobbly when they get up. He then stabilised himself and turned to face the ref, with a clearly look in his eyes, on 8, by which point the ref had already started to wave it off. You are supposed to get to the count of 10 to be ready to fight on. The bell had gone for the end of the round, and whilst you can't be saved by the bell, it explains why he walked towards his corner who were standing on the apron as the round had finished.

The ref should of allowed him to continue, my guess is they wanted wood to win. Taking a point for hitting behind the head when he clearly ducked into the punch. They knew Wood was most likely behind in the cards and stopped the fight. If you give the guy the minute to recover and after that he can’t continue then you stop the fight.

Warrington was dominant throughout, if not overwhelming. He was not only roughing him up, but also outboxing him and taking effective strikes with precision. This is a terrific reversal knockout! But since the round was over, the referee could have given Warrington a one-minute interval to continue. The timing of the stoppage was frustrating, as Warrington was winning the fight until the halfway point.
