Crazy Legs Says No One Person Can Take Credit For Creating Hip-Hop

Kool Herc is generally credited with being the creator of hip-hop with Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash also being recognized as forefathers of the culture. Though no one refutes them as being pioneers, resident b-boy of the Rock Steady Crew Crazy Legs says that culture was being birthed all over during the late 1970s, so there is no way one person can take credit for creating it.

Toasting in Jamaica was started by Count Matchuki in the late 1950s. He conceived the idea by listening to American DJs he heard on the radio talking jive and slick talk while the record was playing. Per Clement Coxsone Dodd, prior to Count Matchuki, toasting was not done in Jamaica.

The issue is people want to conflate additions and break through a with outright creating stuff. They want to boast about creating where as infuencing so just as important. Herc didn’t create anything. He took it and influenced which is fine

I agree with Crazy Legs. Kool Herc didn't create Hip Hop Culture. Hip Hop has several elements that Herc didn't create. Herc is more responsible for laying the foundations of Hip Hop music or rap. The other elements of graffiti, breaking and popping have their own origins/creators. Graffiti was started in Philadelphia by a guy named Cornbread. Breaking did start in the Bronx but not sure by who. Locking and Popping were started in California by Don Campbell(Locking) and Boogaloo Sam is credited with creating popping. Then you have the Strutting styles of the Bay Area in California. Anyway all of these elements eventually were brought together in the Bronx leading to the creation of Hip Hop culture.

I agree with you! The only thing DJ Kool Herc did in the 70s was playing records. Pete Dj Jones extended the "break" in 1969 or 1970 before DJ Kool Herc. The Sugar Hill Gang "rappers delight" is the first hip hop song. Keith Cowboy and Lovebug Starski coined the term "hip hop." Grandwizard Theordore invented "scratching." Kurtis blow said in an article that hip hop didn't start with DJ Kool Herc. Coke LA Rock is credited as being hip hop's first MC.

How did Hip Hop/Rap culture start in Jamaica when it became popular in the UNITED STATES with BLACK AMERICAN music, fashion, activism, and culture? How Sway?!! 1960s/1970s Jamaicans were playing mento, ska, rocksteady, and reggae - NONE of those music forms are used in Hip Hop/Rap in the 1960 or 1970s.

It started in Jamaica whether you want to accept it or not. There are too many documentaries available to watch that proves this point. When West Indians started to migrate to New York, they brought their culture with them. And black american culture adapted to their way of spinning records and used their method of call and response with the crowd. During the infancy of hip hop the DJ was the most important one. Not the MC. And besides, most of the pioneers of hip hop are West Indian. From Kool Herc to Grandmaster Flash to KRS-1 to Redman to Busta Rhymes and to Biggie. Do some research. If people don't want to accept the truth well that's on them.
