Wow…if my neighbor wanted to fix a problem and put in a nice stone wall I would be out there offering food and refreshments to the workers.

I was on a job site once working for my dad. We'd been working for 4 days and this woman next door called the police 43 times making noise complaints and claiming we were throwing crap in her yard (we were not) and making stuff up and trying to desperately get us to stop. Finally she made a claim that I assaulted her, she even had a cut on her face to "prove it". Fortunately the home owner had a camera and had filmed us the entire time we were there. I was on camera at the time she claimed the assault took place and she was not. Imagine her surprise when *SHE* got arrested. Turned out the contractee had been having issues with this woman for years. It was why he had the camera set up. He wanted to make sure she couldn't make any false claims.

I had a construction crew who claimed my 85 year old mother told him he could dump a pile of dirt 4 feet high, 10 feet square on her property during a plumbing excavation. She didn't. Then, he destroyed her yard trying to fill it back in with his backhoe. Didn't even try to apologize or fix the problem. Just threw some grass seed on the mud pit he created and said "Take me to small claims court if don't like it". She never did of course, but she had to buy 2,000 dollars worth of sod put in to fix it. You guys did an amazing job of keeping her yard clean.

You can tell by the way the neighbor had the gutter spouts positioned that she doesn't fully understand the concept of water running downhill...She is fighting a losing battle with gravity, physics and common sense.

At least you guys are respectful of lawns. We came back from being out of town to dead patches of grass, ruts and a broken sprinkler head from a contractor that put up our neighbors fence. I asked them to pay for the sprinkler head repair and the company owner told me kick rocks. I sued for cost of the sprinkler and the to have my lawn repaired after that. Won that and lawyer fees.

She's wanting YOU to fix HER problem for free. This is what she's really all about.

Had the same problem with my neighbour while putting in a retaining wall. She was on the downside of the hill from my property and I discovered she had dug an illegal drain system that was dumping all her drain water at the base of my retaining wall of another neighbour. I later discovered that she has levelled off all her property without building ANY retaining walls after doing so, which forced all her neighbours to have to build their own retaining walls. Last laugh is on her though because now her place is like a swimming pool when it rains as she has no place to allow the water to flow downhill. As was aptly mentioned in this video, you can fight your neighbours but not the laws of gravity.

That drain issue reminds me of a problem my friend had. He bought a house and the first big rain storm water was pouring into his supposedly dry basement, and the sump pump couldn't keep up. He was frantic. My friend and I took a look, just to see if we could spot any 'derp' things. The previous owner had installed a long fence running along the front of the lawn, and when they did it, they had moved the hose the sump pump was pumping through, and coiled it up right near the house. It was just pumping right back against the foundation. We grabbed the end of the hose and walked it out to far end of the fence. The pump didn't survive long after that, but he didn't have any water problems after that, and actually finished the basement later.

If I was the customer with a neighbor like that I’d be like “Hey can you make this wall like 20 feet higher”

When someone makes that many false complaints like that they should be charged with harassment.

As someone with zero building skill, knowledge or aptitude, and a consequent fear of building anything, simply watching you all work with such skill, care and precision warmed my heart. Inspiring stuff.

“The homeowner is happy and that’s all that matters” - These are the words and mindset of a great contractor. 👍

I'm a retired State building inspector, we love the crazy neighbor, this gives us reason to even pass things faster and ok whatever, we don't like crazy neighbors either........

Same here. I build decks and we start around 830 or 9 weekdays. The last job the neighbor lady literally called the cops, city council, permits office, and county inspectors within 20 minutes of us being there. They all came, and here comes crazy lady swinging random papers around talking nonsense and one of the cops finally goes "maam are you going to let these guys work or are we going to take you to jail?" She went in the house and never came out again, but stared at us with what i can only describe as a maniacal serial murderer taking a good look at her next victims. I really despise people like that

I was a code enforcement officer for 20 years. Drainage issues between neighbors were the worst cases to work. Don't ever buy a house at the bottom of an inclined street! Water flows downhill, duh!

I am glad to know that there are other people with crazy neighbors and I am not alone!

I'm surprised she didn't flip out every time you stepped over the property line... or did she? I'm so thankful for my neighbors, I've always had the best ones and we've always ended up more like family in the end. You did great work, love how it turned out!!

The same thing happened to me. The neighbors spoke to the city about 3 times until the inspector told them that there was nothing wrong with what we were doing.

I'm amazed there's an inspector there with enough free time to come out same day! We had to wait about two months to get someone to come out! We should have just bribed our neighbors to complain 😂😂

The building inspector at that time should have told her to stop and if she calls again, cops can be called on her for harassing you and the city constantly.

As a renter who would adore having a home of my own, I never understood why people choose to put big money into a home where they are right up against a neighbor. As I see it, the greatest perk of home ownership is distance from people lol

I like how he says "Red Flags." Such a spot on way to assess the situation. We have red flags in our new construction home regarding the new neighbors who bought next door after we did. We found buried 4 inch plastic corrugated perforated pipe running 25 feet and 60 feet onto our land from their land probably installed by the previous next door neighbor when they built their home 11 years ago (thinking the adjacent lot is vacant and no one will know as we have woods and stream). Our property boundary is 90 to 100 feet from their home and their home is all uphill from the lot line. When asked if they'd mind relocating them onto their land they claimed to not know about them and then avoided a solid commitment to move them (a 15 minute job really). Then we offered them a permission letter which would just protect us from adverse claims and they said "no we're not comfortable with that." Called in a drainage guy and asked them if they'd mind me moving them right now and drainage guy told them there is no value to having your drainage solutions on someone else's property. They had no real option but to consent. I paid to have pop ups installed on their land. All fenced in now.

This is definitely a great company. Quality of workmanship they put into it is very impressive.

If I had been the owner of the house next door, I'd have been jumping for joy that the old retaining wall was being replaced. I'd have been bringing you and your crew coffee and doughnuts.

I have worked with builders for nearly 40 years and I have never seen anyone take so much care in maintaining their neighbours property and respecting their rights. It must’ve been very difficult keeping that as on quite a few occasions. Well done all of you. Cheers from the UK

Had a crazy neighbor at the lake go loco on me (they wanted me to sell out), all in my face, telling me what I owned and didn't, what i could and couldn't do with my property......tried like hell to intimidate me. He lived there full time, I like most of my other neighbors, am there there a weekend or two a month. I ignored him, but he told neighbors, who I mostly don't know, about things I didn't do, lied to them about where my property lines were, put t-post on my property and told them those were my property corners, total nut job. The funny thing about him "educating me" is that I own an architecture firm.....I just let him go on and on......welcome to my sandbox, this is what I do for a living! He called the county commissioner on me, the USPS (apparently he felt my mail box was a hazard), reported me to the Sheriff for removing the t-post he illegally placed on my property....apparently he felt that I stole them......Sheriff wasn't amused with him. One of his "you can't do things" was build a retaining wall in my front yard.....so what did I do, hired someone to build a 10' tall retaining wall......When we got started, the Corp of Engineers showed up after an "anonymous phone call that I was building on their property".......I showed the Corp guy all of the documents of record at the court house, since the lot was platted, my signed survey, the title opinion from my real-estate attorney and the engineered drawings for the wall.....all of which I had handy, because guess what I thought would happen lol! The Corp guy just said thanks, you are free to move forward, and shook his head. He shook my hand as the "neighbor" watched, from his hiding spot behind his bushes. I enjoyed that look of defeat, after 2 years of putting up with his B.S. He doesn't talk to me anymore, which is a nice bonus lol.

I’m based in California and everyone out here has thumbs on their buckets and when I purchased it the salesman said they don’t use them in the east, I gotta say the thumb is really helpful for me and watching this video makes it clear I’m glad I had lt added on

I love how you emphasized the gentle digging with the excavator siding the future dip potential. I hate seeing guys take big deep scoops and thinking that the bucket of an excavator can compact backfill and it won't be an issue later. I've seen things settle within just a couple of years and make things complicated. People tease me about being surgical with a loader bucket but that little bit of extra time goes a long way towards future integrity. And I think when guys work really fast to show off it looks more sloppy.

this exact thing happened when I was helping my parents repave their driveway, entire property was raised by about 5 feet from the neighbors house, and the 50 year old railway tie retaining wall wasn't holding up the gravel driveway anymore. So my parents ripped up their entire driveway and installed a concrete retaining wall BEHIND the fence so no one had to look at the 40 concrete blocks holding the property back. And of course shitbird is calling bylaw officers and harassing the paving crew because he doesn't like that the yard and house drain beside the new driveway and blamed my parents for his flooding issues. He thought (wrongly and had been told before) that the dirt triangle between our properties and the road (corner houses) belonged to him and that we were not allowed to run drainage there. Fun fact that triangle, his fence and about 1/2 of his garden were actually on my parents property according to the city inspector, also his house would flood because his sump was pumping into his backyard UP THE HILL.

10 years of landscaping experience and I've learned that even though retaining walls and fencelines can be the most straightforward, easiest jobs, they by far come with the most drama from homeowners and neighbours. Always good to keep the company nice guy around on these crews. Looks awesome lads, great job

Honestly this crew is the most hard working crew i've seen, and they do their jobs perfectly. They even do their best to leave the neighbors yard basically untouched, which is why i don't understand this karen has a problem, and they even try to explain why there isn't an issue

I sure am glad that my 25 acre farm is large enough so I can't see any of my neighbors due to the thick forest surrounding our pastures. We never have any issues with any of the folks around us.

We have a neighbor who calls the building inspector on us constantly. The inspector comes and says he is here for th same bs as usual. Whats funny is we mentioned to the inspector that neighbor built an apartment in his basement illegally, the inspector went up there and fined the guy $5,000. What's even funnier is my mom worked with this inspector before he was an town inspector for 10 years, I worked with him and his brother for 7 years.

This was so cool. Massive improvement on the homeowners property. All of the workers were very professional and respectful of the neighbors property. Good work to all of those that worked on this job.

Well considering how much water was likely leaching through that old mess, I think I would be grateful as that neighbor. The issue with the elevation of the lots is not something that this crew was going to rectify, that issue would have been there from the time she either built or bought that house. Something potential homeowners need to be cognizant of when house shopping!

LOL she bought a house lower than the neighbors and than complains.. so love when my neighbors do any type of work, makes the neighborhood look awesome.

As a landscape contractor myself, I almost always (if the next door homeowner is available) go to the home next door to discuss the project, ask if they agree on the property lines, ask if they have any questions or concerns and usually receive their blessings nearly 90 percent of the time without issue. Sometimes there are discussions about what he said/she said on neighboring disputes but we try to work through all the bugs. Needless to say, we don’t get these issues as you see here. Our system may not be perfect but works fairly well.

This whole story reminded me of my one neighbor. We moved into our house about 5 years ago and there was a 6 ft. wooden fence separating our backyards. The fence was probably 15-20 years old. After that many years of Wyoming snow the fence was rotting and leaning towards our yard. One day when we weren’t home she came into our backyard and propped up the fence with 2x2 pieces of lumber. We didn’t know where they came from so we removed them so we could mow and not have to maneuver around them. Well Wyoming isn’t only known for its snow but also for its WIND.🌬 Low and behold a good wind came through and down went the fence. She was so mad that we took down the 2x2’s that were on OUR property. The fence was actually on her property but we told her we would go halves with her to replace what fell. She decided to just replace the posts and reuse the rotten sections that fell. This happened about 2 years ago and she’s been cold toward us ever since. All we can do is continue to try to be good neighbors.

Some people will never be happy, that’s what makes them “happy”…. You guys did everything right and the sad thing is the next time it rains, even if no rain drained towards her house, she would say there was so much flooding due to the neighbors drain… can’t please everyone in this life….

I used to do tree work (removal, trimming, etc.) in TN many years ago, and I feel for these guys and everyone that tries to IMPROVE dangerous conditions. It seems that there is always someone that can't tolerate anyone else doing anything at all in their "space". They enjoy their tense emotional climate, I suppose, since it allows them to feel something, albeit rage and fruitless whining. This job looks good, and if the neighbor actually deals with her own drainage issues, everything will fall into neighborly harmony.

You guys are so conscientious, and are so great in your attention to detail, it blows me away! The fact that y'all are proud enough of what you do that you literally sign your work is appropriate - there is artistry in what you do. I wish everyone could exhibit a small amount of the care in what they do. Doing the right thing isn't always easy, but it's always right.

Enjoyed the video, loved the retaining wall. I am also a landscape architect and own a landscape construction company for over 35 years. Anytime I am working on a property line, with the customers blessing, I always go talk with the neighbors and explain what I plan to do and why it would be better for them too. This retaining wall definitely improved the look and the drainage. I would of discussed why the neighbor is having drainage issues like you pointed out in the video. You would of had a happy neighbor, happy customer and a possible corrective drainage project in the neighbors yard. Last but not least, they did walk in her yard a lot and left some dirt behind. I would of raked that dirt up and spread some grass seed.
