I'm an engine guy first and foremost, never "met" an engine I didn't like, and I've had a deep passion for outboard engines since I was a little boy. Great video, as always 👍

Try working on them, i worked on boats for years, the engine variants are crazy and when you are working On 6 different engines at the same time it can get quite overwealming.

@@MyFabian94 they only have lititation for the oil useage as i know. They put the exhaust into the water and the leftover fuel-oil going into the water. And to be honest, its not so good.

Nothing can replace the 2 strokes. The 4 stroke outboards serve no functional advantage other than pleasing tree huggers and weighing down transoms.

I work around a ton of boats. The yamaha 225 2 stroke v6 has to be one of the greatest sounding engines I have ever heard. Dream of putting one into a car some day.

Yamaha has a real knack for making the best sounding engines on the planet! (like the V-10 that was designed for the Lexus LFA). Must have something to do with their being a musical instrument company first.😁🎵🎶👍

My grandpa had a 2-stroke Yamaha outboard engine that one of my uncles took and couldn’t get running. I’m trying to get my hands on it as I have rebuilt hundreds of 2 strokes and could probably diagnose it in 5 minutes.

I have a few examples I'd like to have seen here, Konig 500cc & 700cc Hydroplane outboard, Crescent outboard and maybe the Mercury Optimax 200sx but you did nail one of my all time favourites, the Evinrude / Johnson v8.

Visio, I think you have confused what 'outboard' means. An 'outboard' engine means it's mounted outside the hull. In this case the 4 rotor and the OM606 are mounted as 'inboard' engines, cause they are inside the hull.

Quincy Welding at 4:00 has been building hydroplane racing outboard engines and controls since 1952. Inspired by Mercury Outboards, they take Mercury engineering to a whole new level of outboard racing engine performance. ;-)

I know someone who has a mini yacht, that uses 5 motors. They each kick in sequentially depending on throttle input. It's pretty cool actually, cause for low speed cruising only the center one is pushing the boat; but as more power is needed, the propellors centrifugal clutch engages on the other 4, creating a smooth transition from around 20mph (~32kph) to around 60 (~96kph). All 5 are running simultaneously, but they all come in during certain load conditions where they provide an extra boost of power.

Word of advice: Boat and Bus motors crank the opposite direction (i.e. a pusher bus motor will make a front engine dump truck go forward while in reverse and backwards while in forward gears)

Evinrude/Johnson/OMC had a racing division called "2nd effort". Send them your 300 horsepower V8 outboard, and they would send it back 450 horsepower. I met a guy who had one on a pickle fork, he said it would do 128 miles an hour.

You need to update this.... Mercury Marine made a 2 speed V12 600 hp stationary outboard. Only the prop swivels to turn. Oh and did I mention IT HAS A V12

One of our friends had a Stoker twin tunnel hull boat with that Evinrude V8 outboard. Like the guy in the video, my friend had opened up that plate above the prop. Many a time I had been out in that boat, and I can still recall that banshee wail that outboard made.

I currently own the tunnel boat with the v8 that v8 was on one of my dads boats we have since swapped it with a like new v8 Johnson very similar engines just this one is not ported like the one in the video 😁

In the late-60s, the world speed record for outboard-powered boating was set with a custom-built supercharged 6-cyl. "boxer" 2-stroke, which was mounted with it's crankshaft in the vertical position.

Remember Mercury Marine built the DOHC 32V V-8 used in the Corvette I the 90s. Plus they build a DOHC 32V V-8 based on the Chevrolet Big Block meant for off shore racing and high end hot rods. Plus a DOHC version of the LS7 www.hotrod.com/articles/mercury-racing-big-block/

@@bitelaserkhalif I know of at least one sailboat that used the whole hollow steel keel as a heat exchanger so that the bus engine used wouldn't get salt in it. To add something for the OP's benefit: Radiators tend to deteriorate from the salt in the air. So a lot of manufacturers just said Fuck It, treated the block as best they could, and pulled in sea water for cooling directly. It's typically how cheaper outboards and a few inboards are built, but nicer stuff uses a dual-loop setup whereby fresh coolant is placed in a pipe/chamber with sea water in a chamber right beside it-heat travels into the cold seawater and is then pumped out, that's the Heat Exchanger mentioned above. It's a much cheaper part to replace (it's almost a consumable) then the block itself.

Check the timeline and check how little power an amrican v8 car made in that era. And boats need reliability, no mobile phones and no hitchhiking at sea.

A boat and a car have two different requirements for making power. A boat engine needs to stay at peak rpm the entire time. Not like a car which spends majority of its life at low rpm.

The *Chrysler HEMI V8 (5.7L or 6.4L, depending on vehicle model; 2003-present)* ...is probably the best choice for an outboard engine on a speedboat. Either that, or a de-tuned *Chevrolet LT1 small-block V8 (5.7L and 6.2L)* ...from a *Chevrolet Camaro (3rd-gen onwards; 1988-present)* or *Chevrolet Corvette (C4 onwards; 1989-present),* or even a de-tuned *5.0L Coyote/Windsor V8* or *Ford Modular V8 (4.6L and 5.4L)* ...from a 1987-present *Ford Mustang GT.* Now obviously, any of these outboard engines for my choice of boat would be *four-stroke* with direct *fuel-injection.*
