S3:E5 We go for a drive in our friends 1968 Volkswagen Beetle, "Volksrod"The european rat rod, in the Miami art district of Wynwood. The car doesn't only call Wynwood home, but we thought it was the perfect location to film it.
1st thing you might notice is the elongated wheels base, that's because the front axle was moved forward for a "more sport look". Also, the that that the wheel wells have been removed. The chassis has also been narrowed and windshield frame chapped as well. Originally the car was a hard top, but that was chopped and converted into a Carson top. It's not a convertible! It has a fixed welded frame underneath, finished in a nice black canvas with the great detail of an oval window (in glass).
When purchased by the owner it has an air suspension, but was replaced with springs instead for a smoother ride.
The engine is a 1600 boxer motor with EMP performance headers. Taillights come from railroad track lights! Front lights are said to come from an antique Ford truck and painted black, although they are brass (we think it should sport the bass).
Interior is fairly basic with Baja style racing buckets (also in a fixed position) that made a little difficult to drive. It as a long shifter lever with a cartoon head as the grip.
The wire wheels also are said to come from a classic Ford truck and it covered in a thin white wall tire.
The car was a blast to drive and it sure had the tourist crazy as we drove by the Wynwood streets. This car isn't about comfort or function, it's about looks and a self expression.
