We know that Sansevieria plants are one of the easiest houseplants to care for. They are the perfect indoor plants for beginners because they are easy to care for and almost un-killable. Almost… That's because you can still kill a snake plant...Confession, I have killed a snake plant before... In today’s video I’ll share with you some of the ways to kill your snake plants so you can hopefully you can avoid the same mistake I made. We’ll also propagate the Zeylanica and Whale Fin through the division and water method. Enjoy

I love snake plants now... I used to look down on them as though they were the McDonald's fast food of the plant world... but have great appreciation for them now. One propagation tip that has helped me which I believe has made a difference. I find I have much better success rate and faster root development if I let the cuttings heal for a week before putting in water or soil. When I put them straight into water, many times the cut will get soft and start to rot. It takes some patience but I think it's worth letting the cut dry out a few days.

Thick leaved plants need to heal before being planted, if not then they will absorb the moisture and become soft and mushy and rot.

Perfect timing for this video…I just bought a medium size Sansevieria that was literally busting out of its pot with a new 2-leaf baby the same size...Now I know where to cut, and not to be afraid to cut! I refuse to call them snake plants because I have a phobia about snakes. 😳 They will always be Sansevieria to me. I also have a large Mother-in-Law’s Tongue. I do love all plants that only need to be watered once a month! Thanks again! 💕

I was at Walmart and I saw this 4" snake plant. It wasn't even in a pot. It was laying there roots all out waiting to die. I used to work there and I know they would throw it away. So I picked it up shoved it back into it's pot & bought it. When I got home I transplanted it. I named it "Lucky" cause it's lucky to be alive. It is very happy now. It has grown 2" & had a baby.

@@Patricia-uu6wo I’m fairly new to propagating too. But all I did was stick it into the soil and watered it every time the soil dried out. They need more water when they’re just a cutting. As soon as a baby pops up you can water less like how you’d normally water a snake plant. But you don’t need to cover it. Just put it in a place that gets a lot of light

I am a Sanseviera and Hoya and orchid cactuses lover. I went to a nursery one day and they had a Whale Fin they were about to toss as she had a big circle of dry leaf in the middle as it froze during transportation. I got it for almost nothing... to thank me for saving her from the garbage can, she gave me a "baby" few weeks after... not she is about 2.5' high... in less than a year... a real beauty. I also have (besides 5 more species) a Moonshine that I have to separate as she is bursting her pot... I think I have something like 10-12 babies in it. I have Sanseviera for ever since my mom gave me one of hers when I was young and I never lost one... yet... when I moved very far away 25 years ago I had to give all my plants 😪 ... my Sanseviera was giganormous... I was heart broken to give them away but I was not able to bring them with me, sadly. I love your videos... and your cat 😊

Thank you so much for admitting a snake plant can be killed!! I have the toughest time with them b/c I can't seem to read the signs...are they thirsty or not? I think I've killed a number of them from severly underwatering them and one from over-watering. And let's not talk about propagating them....I've NEVER been successful. I can't wait to finish this video so I can hopefully learn something today & figure out why people say they're so "easy" to care for.🤦🏽‍♀️

She just let it go in the front yard for years, on rain and super bright sun, I have no idea how it is alive, I started to take care of her plants a few years ago and now it's in 5 different pots and multiplying. I also found some other types in the street and they're alive too. Maybe it's because where I live or something and I also don't have strong winter at all here in the part of Brazil where I live 😊

Nice content. Love snake plants I found that they have a presence but boy! Yours was hard to get out of the pot. Do you have left over soil by Fall? If yes, what is the best/ safest way to store soil during Winter? I am asking because I was wondering if the soil will attract pests while sitting there for months.

I had a pot in my bathroom that started dying on me and I managed to save one lone leaf by propagating it in water. Took forever like you said but it finally grew roots and now I have all alone on my window sill. I water it about once a week and so far and it's still there not changing. It's not dying at least but I'm anxious for it to grow some babies.

Enjoyed your video. Very envious of your whale fin! It is beautiful. When I propagate a snake plant I dont cut up the leaf. I have better luck putting the whole leaf in the water and it roots pretty fast when you have it in a sunny area. One time I tried cutting the leaf and was not successful.

I have successfully soil propagated leaf segments, and like water prop, it took forever! I started it in August, and didn't get any signs of growth for at least 6 months. Just kept the soil moist-ish, and as long as the segments looked normal and nothing was rotting, I left it alone. Now I have three new leaf spikes that are probably 8" high and getting taller by the day!

Snake plants are my favorite! My Danish Crown has put out 12 pups this spring. I recently got my dream whale fin💚💚💚, they are just the coolest statement pieces! I tried water propagating one of my Danish Crown leaves, after 6 weeks it looks like it might be producing some microscopic roots😂. I prefer to propagate them by division or directly back into the soil. Love your shirt!!

I broke off a big leaf also. It broke right about where yours broke off. I put mine in rainwater in an old decorative canning jar. Kept changing out the water once in a great while. I love just the one leaf look in the corner of my kitchen counter. I have under cabinet led lights. After around 3 or months I noticed tiny roots starting to form. It now has multiple 3” roots so figured I’m going to pot it up. I’m afraid if I don’t it will die. Thanks for the great tutorial. Just subscribed and looking forward to seeing more videos. 👍🏼🥰

When I put a prop directly in water I definitely killed it. Started rotting, turned to mush. So that went into the trash. The good part of the leaf I cut up into smaller pieces like you did, let it callous over before water propagating, and I left it out for a good week before I put them in water! But now, two months or so later, I have roots! It's definitely exciting!

Hi I am from India. Always watch your video. I like it. Very informative with high speed. I usually propagate Snake plant through division or leaf cutting . Both are eásy.. leaf cutting grew faster in a wet soil in dark condition. Love your plants and green planters it looks very beautiful. Bye...
