Creality Ender 3 S1 PRO: In-depth review, Ender 3 S1 VS Ender 3 S1 PRO, side-by-side comparison
• Creality Ender 3 S1 PR...
**************
Welcome back to Aurora Tech Channel. Today, I am going to review the latest Ender-3 S1 that I recently received from Creality. I would like to thank Creality for sending me the printer to review. I will go through the features of this printer, do a quick assembly walkthrough, do some test prints, and most importantly, I will talk about what I like and what I think this printer can improve on.
I have no plans to do any upgrades on this printer yet, the stock setup is really good. I have many 3D printers, many of which are from Creality. I have an Ender-3, an Ender-3 Pro, a CR6-SE, an Ender-5 Pro, two CR-10S Pro V2 printers, and my new favorite: the Ender-3 S1. It has the best direct extruder from a stock setup, and the print quality is really impressive right out of the box, the hardware configuration and print quality are hard to beat.
So, if you’re considering buying your first 3D printer or if you just have an Ender-3 or other basic machines and want to purchase a mid-range printer that doesn't really need any upgrades, this is an excellent choice.

Just ordered an S1 based off of this video, thanks so much for the insight and detailed information. The upgrades included on this machine are definitely substantial enough for me to jump in on despite already having 2 original and 1 pro Ender-3 machine in my studio. Now all I need to do is figure out where in my studio to fit this S1 and the Elegoo Saturn I just splurged on 2 weeks ago... lol.

I researched many machines and reviews, as a novice I found it difficult to understand everything being explained in most reviews. I wanted a machine that I could use easily with features that seemed to be commonly added to basic machines. After watching your review which is excellent and I could see the benefits of the Creality Ender 3 S1. So I bought one and I used your review to help setup the printer and it’s been working without issues ever since. Thank you for producing such great reviews and keep them coming as I am still learning and your videos are very informative. Great Job :)

A few remarks about the Upgrades: The filament Sensor is not getting if filament is stuck I guess, only if it runs out. A nice feature, 5 Euros is ok. Dual Z Axis is bad! We know how bad the Z axis screw is on every Ender 3. We never found one that has a good screw and runs synchronous with the second one. I removed this upgrade and bought linear rails to have a more even out Z axis and layering - 120 Euros for the rails and I still print and make the upgrade parts. No Touchscreen, my biggest complaint. It's in color now, but still no touch. The appearance is great, I like the gantry and v-slot covers. But my biggest complaint for this build is: Still the same shitty heated bed that warps like a tortilla. I've got a 5 mm precision Al Mg4.5 Mn0.7 plate for 18 Euros and drill the holes into it - this one will never warp again. A silicon mat for heating it and cork for insulation of the bottom. 18 Euros, plus 38 for the heater and 5 for the cork, to finally have no problems with the bed anymore. The CR touch is a cool addon, but it only compensates for the shitty bed. And having Prusa like a buildplate that "jumps" off the bed, is only good when the bed will not make an arc in the middle. The PSU is the same, and the Bigtree Mainboard is not bad, but for bed and heater an external Mosfet is a good idea. I have the same Mainboard and if the onboard Mosfet dies, it's 50 bucks and not 8 for the external ones. The direct drive is something fantastic in this upgrade, the plastic extruder of the other Ender 3 was really crap and I switched to full metal asap and then the Voron M4. Now I print the Voron Afterburner DD. Creality did some good, but also some stupid decisions here. I guess it's also as loud as the old version, silent fans to get under 60DB would be a great change, but many have the printer not in the same room or in a housing I guess.

This is definitely a great upgrade out of the box on the Ender 3 platform. I personally enjoy the modding process but I agree others might not enjoy all the troubleshooting that goes along with it. A positive of taking the mod route is you learn a lot about the printer and it's operation in the process. Another great video 👍

@@belakulcsar Currently I am thinking about the Prusa Mini or the Twotrees SP-5 CoreXY. The Mini because I can print out of the box. The SP-5 for the benefits of a CoreXY printer. Nice, i did the same upgrades to my ender 3 Pro and cam to around the same price and that did not include the dual Z-axis yet, it's about time Creality made these upgrades stock and I would not mind the price since it still is cheaper than doing them all manually, it is true you miss out on the "Fun" and you learn less about what 3D-printing entails but on the other hand a lot of non-technical people can do without that knowledge

Great review! I’m very excited to see how the sprite extruder holds up over time, and I’m glad they went with a probe bed leveling solution rather than another strain sensor like on the CR-6. I have to disagree that getting rid of the bed leveling wheels would be an improvement though - it’s a huge pain to try and get a perfect level if you’re tightening a dozen little screws every time you calibrate the bed. Though I’d definitely recommend that Creality ditch the springs in exchange for their silicone spacers, since those are so great at holding their level in comparison.

A configuration option in Marlin is to turn off bed heater during Z probes, in case the probe is sensitive to the noise of the PWM voltage driving the bed heater. Another configuration is to make sure the bed is at the specified temperature before probing, to account for heat-induced warping. So, it'll cool down while probing, move on to the next point and have to wait for the bed heat to get back to what it's supposed to be, then turn off the bed heater to probe again. This led me to turn off the option to only probe at the specified temperature, because the heat-caused fluctuations of the bed were smaller than the noise-caused fluctuations of probe triggering.

What real improvement could be is bed tramming, but in visual way - machine passes 5 keypoints, shows the difference between "medium" and specific point. Next you turn adjusting knobs and again BL-touch passes 5 points (what is quick) and shows new numbers (and you repeat adjusting). It's VERY easy to implement, but not done.

Hope to see these new features on one of their larger build plate size printers, I have a ender 3 V2, these new features are tempting but not enough to get me to upgrade, but if these were on a larger printer with a 300 x 300+ build plate, I would be very interested.

Thanks, a great review! I bought the S1 on the strength of this review and others. However, as a beginner, I am having a newbie problem it seems that everyone knows the answer to but doesn't talk about. When doing my first print, I printed directly to the bed, as it appears in your video. The print was great, but extremely difficult to remove from the bed. Bending the bed made no difference. I was finally able to ease it off by working around the edges with a putty knife, but it required enough force I was worried about gouging the bed. After removing it, I have PLA residue on the plate I can't entirely remove due to the texture of the bed. Is there a pre print prep I should do such as applying a glue stick layer, or a solvent that won't harm the bed but will dissolve the residual PLA. Thanks for any help!

The bed sensor not stowing is just a feature you can have in the config. Marlin has it as #define BLTOUCH_HS_MODE. Doesn't make it more or less betterer or worse really, its just for speed. Also comment the //#define MULTIPLE_PROBING 2 to make it probe just once for speed. My probing is 5x5, 1 probe at 15mm/s and it's just as good as doing it many times slower.

I didn't catch at all how "wider extrusion" (maybe HIGHER extrusion??) helps with bed tramming. If your bed is 2mm below, you not only waste more filament, but also join this "base" to the model (what sometime can be undesirable, because it's hard to detach). I hope I understood correctly idea of "wider extrusion" (of filament?).

The pre-assembly is a change from the usual Creality practice. And would be a big selling point for some people.

great content as usual! as a long time prusa user, i just bought the pro model of this ender 3 s1. the only complaints i have so far: no obvious way to get the extruder to extrude when i load filament to purge the old color out. also, it doesn't seem as dimensionally accurate for sharp corners, like a 90 degree corner. those end up rounded, so getting a square part to fit into a square hole is very difficult with this issue. older 3d printers used to have this issue, so i think there's gotta be some slicer settings that can fix this

One thing i noticed immediately is that the slots in the extrusions were gone. I kind of liked the extrusions to add on and attach custom pieces

Aurora, Your videos are full of useful information. You have a knack for focusing on the important / consequential details, and your delivery is even, calm, and a pleasure to hear. You are indeed a smart, talented young lady. Keep up the good work! Now one question: What do you make of the top layer shown on the video at 11:00? Is this a function of the printer. Similar effects are visible on the screw you printed. Many thanks! :-)

Great video!! I hope creality will see this ,and learn from this!! And one more thing full metal heatbreak should be basic feature on 3d printers! (and maybe better,if the psu is on the side like prusa and basic ender 3 has, easier psu relocation for example outside, and better ventilation for psu)

The full metal heatbreak alone, i.e. Microswiss, is 50 Bucks and you only need it when you print high temperature with ABS and stuff. If you do it, you could modify your printer (and yes I've added a Microswiss lol)

@@Spelter nope its could be used even at PETG (at least capricorn) and buy an overpriced microswiss heatbreak is really not the only option

@@zola5584 I bought it for 20 bucks used, so no overpriced there. And I had problems with PETG from Jake3d and the original heatbreak. With the Microswiss, it works like a charm.

Sounds like a good printer.I have a Ender 3 max and have done some of these upgrades.I know for me I would buy one and put a bunch of the parts on my max.I have a solid bed,CR touch,Dual Z axis and have all the stepper motors to the big one 40\42 I think thats it.Too bad you cant buy the parts! Great job showing this printer.

Hi! I've been binge watching all your videos and the production quality as well as the in-depth analysis is just outstanding! I was wondering if there is any information you'd recommend regarding the extruder for the S1. Im intending to upgrade to an all metal one but I cant find much online about the necessary firmware upgrades for setting the nozzle temps

It is a nice printer, clean looking with the upgrades you mentioned. However, I feel it may be a little advanced for people new to the hobby and this printer at that price may encourage lots of beginners who simply have no ideas about fine tuning.. I feel it is an unfair price comparison as 3 pro's are cheaper now and really you may save $40, if anything at all.. It's not so much that we "enjoy" modding, more that some are on a budget and post modding allows you to spread the cost.. I strongly disagree with you about getting rid of bed springs, I'm sorry, but I feel the springs are necessary.. My reason is that, yes, it has auto bed levelling, but abl is only a fix, not a cure. The more you can manually level the bed, the less the abl will have to fix and the better the overall quality. Never rely on abl.. For someone who has the 3 pro, has experience and wants to upgrade, this out-of-the-box may be useful.. Good video though and nice presentation by you..
