My uncle was a first guy to have this record in our town back in the day... He sailed a lot for living so he collected it in America at the time and brought it here to Croatia... the whole town came to our house to listen to this song on repeat, people were trying to learn to play it by ear and it was a madhouse, still have that record :) cheers

The groove is coming from Ginger Baker, from his Jazz background as a drummer. That man is a genius. Not stable, but a genius musician. Blues and Jazz, before metal was a thing, helping invent heavy rock that metal evolved from. It's a great piece of music for slow-mo walking-through-the-place scenes in films. So cool.

Go back to Classical music. That's the true roots for metal. Paganini, Brahms, Beethoven, and so on. Without that generation, metal has no root. Blues and Jazz definitely spawned extended roots of metal and progressive.

Eric Clapton blew the Psychedelic / Rock world away with his use of the now-famous "Wah" pedal. The album Disraeli Gears is a Blues-converted-to-Rock masterpiece featuring very precise use of this new-at-the-time guitar effect pedal. That is why you were getting suggestions for "Sunshine of Your Love". Another absolute gem from this earlier album is "Tales of Brave Ulysses". Thank you Cream for the creation of this material, & thank you Lost In Vegas for caring.

I admit...I did feel a little let down when you did not go crazy for Eric Clapton's guitar work here, and the brilliance of what I consider to be one of the best songs ever written. But I have to say that I appreciate the two of you. And for very specific reasons. You two demonstrate 3 major things that had me subscribe and listen to almost all of your reactions to the songs you choose. This is the only channel of this kind I have found I CAN listen to and be entertained while seeing a song either refreshed with a new perspective or introduced to me with a good introduction. These are the 3 main reasons I love and recommend you when I can: 1. You do actively cross genres, and time periods. 2. You do have an open mind when listening. 3. You are honest with opinions without being rude in the slightest way. I have recommended you to many people. For example, friends who only listen to hip hop, those who are alternative 90s snobs, my own group of singer-songwriter fans, and my close friends who are like me: children of the 80s/90s but raised in the south from classic country parents. And some others I encounter who think that music stopped in 1979). A short story: Your review of Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, and Sturgill Simpson allowed me to show some friends who only listen to hip hop what it is that makes me follow these bands to catch their live shows. That was something that I could not do as well as you did. It may not have won them over completely, but they did understand it a lot better and have an appreciation now. And I appreciate that. It truly does bring people together when you open your mind, through your ears, to new experiences.

Clapton should be grateful for Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, as he never did anything after Cream that was anywhere near as good as this. He is a great guitar player-yes, RESPECT-but as a songwriter, singer, and performer he's overrated, and Cream blows away any of his later efforts. Imnsho, Jack Bruce is the one who deserves more accolades, not just for being such a fantastic bass player, but for writing and singing the most iconic songs from Cream and being the biggest reason why they were so good and ARE so important.

@@michaelmelro6641 He left the Yardbirds because he wanted to play blues and The Yardbirds were going more pop. He then went to play with John Mayall and made an album with him, then him and Jack Bruce (who was playing bass with Mayall at the same time) left and formed Cream with Ginger Baker.

The real tension within Cream was between Bruce and Baker. Jack Bruce whilst being a talented writer/musician/performer, had (by most reports) a very inflated ego. Baker later said the reason he moved to France was he couldn't stand being in the same country as Bruce.

The thing that sets this song apart for me is how they structured the build in the guitar. It starts as just strumming chords in the first verse, then in the second it begins to show through with some Wah pedal fills between the lyrics, then it takes off more and more eventually rolling as a full guitar solo simultaneous to the last verse, and then finally taking the song over entirely for the final solo to finish the song. It's a really cool and very unique approach to arranging the vocal relationship to the guitar, something that many other bands played with over the years. Pay attention to that relationship next time you take a listen.

Cream kind of changed the game back in the day. One of the first ‘supergroups’, if not the first. The best players from the mid 60s London blues scene got together to play the blues. What actually came out from these 3 guys was way beyond what even they expected. In a live setting they were very different...for the first time at ‘pop’ concerts people stopped dancing and sat and listened as these guys went at each other (musically) for 15-20 minutes a song. Crazy stuff...

"Around at the same time as Hendrix", you say. Hendrix's main condition for leaving his steady gig at the Cafe Wha to come over to England was that he would meet Eric Clapton, who was then playing in Cream. Once here, Hendrix's first public appearance on stage was jamming with Cream ( they played Killing Floor). Without Clapton or Cream Hendrix would probably have stayed in New York as "just another black guy with a guitar".

Eric Clapton on guitar, Jack Bruce on bass guitar, Ginger Baker on drums, The band name Cream comes from these three being cream of the crop of British rock musicians at the time. Eric Clapton said he wrote this song about Jimi Hendrix, kind of a culture shock moving from the states to England. It was kind of sad how great artists like Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, eventually Jimi Hendrix had to go to Europe where people appreciated their artistry. Howlin' Wolf wasn't a big star in the United States until he did a European tour with the Rolling Stones, Sure everyone who knew of the Wolf loved him, He was listed in the Chicago phone book and you could call him and drop by for a visit. I don't know if that opened up the perspective on anything to do with music on a historical level. take care!

Blues the the main influences for guitar and bass. Eric Clapton is known for blues, and Jack Bruce, who unfortunately many today don't know, was an incredible innovator who played with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and many others. Both Eric and Jack also played on a lot of British albums in the 1960s. The drummer, Ginger Baker, is still incredible, and has for a very long time been known as both an incredible jazz drummer, as well as one of the loudest drummers ever! Cream was a huge influence on nearly every other rock band of the 1970s and later, though today.

The Skynyrd song that sounds the most like White Room is The Needle and the Spoon. Although you're correct that the chord progression is initially like Sweet Home Alabama. The reason for that is because Sweet Home Alabama uses a 1-min7-4 chord progression (which is D-C-G). The first 3 chords of White Room are D-C-G then it throws in a flat 6 (Bflat) passing tone to a minor7 (C) passing tone back to the one chord (which is D). So that's the music theory behind why you could hear that.

Eric Clapton is amazing. One of hendrix's heros. When hendrix first went to europe, before he was famous, he joined Clapton on stage in a local pub, Clapton was seriously impressed and helped jimi get his start. for some epic clapton try The Yardbirds. After clapton left the yardbirds, Jeff Beck took his place, then when jimi page took over lead guitar beck left and that's where Led Zeppelin came from. the yardbirds had concert dates to fill and they finished the tour as "The New Yardbirds" and when the small pub tour was over they changed the name of the group to Led Zeppelin and Rocked the World. Interesting note, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimi Page all played for "The Yardbirds" and all three are pretty much agreed to by the entire music industry to be the top 3 guitar players of all time. The Yardbirds were pretty much the start of what rock and roll was to become, started in the early 60's with amazing music never heard before. notable masterpieces include "For Your Love" , "Over Under Sideways Down", "Shapes of Things", "Train Kept a Rollin" and my personal fave "Heart Full of Soul" (jimi page version) also of note is the Led Zeppelin classic masterpiece "Dazed and Confused" was first conceived by Jimi Page while he was with The Yardbirds just before they disbanded in the late 60's.
