Enjoy watching treefrogs? Build a treefrog tube! This video shows you how to construct these simple frog 'hangouts' that provide shelter and humidity for nearby treefrogs. Perhaps they'll return the favor by consuming some flies. To learn more about Texas wildlife, visit tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wild/...

I have to say I stumbled upon this video randomly looking for frog homes about 2 years ago. I made probably five tubes and at any given time on my property of just a little over 2 acres these tubes will be occupied by tree frogs. Sometimes multiple frogs in a tube. My favorite thing besides watching the enjoyment of my kids check them is listening to the frogs croak or make noises in the tubes. You can tell they're in the tubes by the way it echoes. Delightful. 🙂 Brings allot of happiness to a nature lover like myself. Thank you so much for this idea. A great gift. 💓 I'm in Northern Central Missouri. Somewhat rural area.

I grew up in Florida but my family visited family in NC. My earliest memories include tree frogs chirping/croaking in the rain and at night. I’ve moved to NC and am dismayed at the lack of wildlife in my neighborhood. I am finding ways to change it. I’m looking forward to hearing tree frogs again.

@@merk9569 this is really crazy that you mention this to me right now. I've been in Florida for about a month now visiting family. We made some tree frog tubes and I just got done investigating frog sounds of Florida because I was curious what sounds where what. They make the most unique sounds. Crazy coincidence.! I hope you find some tree frogs in NC.

Update...I've had these up for 18 of these tubes (yes, 18) about 5 months in Southern California for the Pacific Tree frog. They REALLY work!! About half of mine are filled up with frogs right now, and in the driest, hottest part of the year for us. Will probably have full occupancy once it starts raining. Personally, I don't attach them to a tree. I angle them at 45ish degrees (easier to clean out and observe) and place them into low vegetation where I know frogs hang out in my yard. It's really great to see the little frogs looking out of the tube and I love knowing I'm helping them out.

Ive discovered several species of toads and frogs hanging out in 2 different 4" corrugated plastic drain pipes on a client's property. One drains the home's front rain gutters, and the other drains excess water from the front walkway. Both pipes are shallow dug underground, and pop out of the ground at the edges of the lawn. They are at least 20-30 feet long underground, and tend to hold a little water for at least several days after rain, even in mid summer. I run the hose into the front end of the pipes 1-2 times a week during droughts, to ensure theres always moisture inside. So toads, pickerel frogs, a few green frogs and even a grey tree frog have been spotted hanging out just inside the end of each pipe during daytime. As soon as the sun starts going down, the little pickerel frogs and toads start working their way out into the yard and driveway.

And do they sing at night? I think that’s the one thing I miss about growing up in central Texas with a pool in the back yard: the sound of frogs trilling at night.

I'm glad I watched this, as opposed to just blindly putting a few of these together out of PVC and caps I recently bought. The idea of an overflow/drain hole at 5" didnt occur to me, neither did the top hole for hanging it. I was going to use some steel strapping I had left over from a squirrel house I built 2 years ago. But drilling a hole near the top to hang on a nail makes more sense. I also wasnt quite sure how long to make them. I was thinking 12"-14", but maybe that's too short after all. Mine will mostly be used by grey tree frogs and Cope's grey tree frogs. But there is at least 1 green tree frog who has recently started showing up to make noise recently, so....... Maybe spring peepers will use these.

@@ashleykinach5079 I have purchased all of the materials(PVC piping, end caps), but i havent had time to install them yet, and besides, I just bought the Rustoleum plastic-compatible dark grey primer earlier today. It took 20mins to find a cust serv worker in Walmart who had a key to the LOCKED spray paint cabinets! So ive gotta drill, spray and install them. Ill probably get that done within a week or so. We had a major thunderstorm tonight, which will provide some moisture for the tree frogs for at least a couple days during this ridiculously HOT heat wave we've been in for a week now.

Would this device be a good strategy to keep them away from my car? Here in Northwest Florida, they like to climb into the cracks and tight spaces to hide during the day. It's a problem if I am unable to catch them since they sometimes end up trapped inside the car, or else flying off of it into traffic.

I live in a small town in Texas but my home is in a commercial area. I have a small garden with one fairly large tree, a fountain, lots of potted plants and shade from both the tree and some "sails" I have up. I'd love to encourage some tree frogs, as I have butterflies and birds but am unsure if they would thrive nor how to get them here in the first place. Help can I have tree frogs?
@johndavis8924
@johndavis8924 Жыл бұрын
If you don't have habitat for them in your area, I would not try to "introduce" them (even the native species). You don't want to bring them to an area they can't survive. This approach is only for folks who have species in the area that will use structures like this. Treefrogs need more area than a single yard, so unless they are in the area already, I wouldn't try to establish them in a yard. That's my perspective.

This is great!!! Any idea as to why only 5 inches up the tube for the drain hole? I live in Southern California and I'm putting up many of these for our Pacific Tree Frog. They need all the help they can get out there.
@texasparksandwildlife
@texasparksandwildlife 6 жыл бұрын
The drain hole simply needs to allow some water to be retained in the bottom to provide humidity in the tube without filling it completely.
@johndavis8924
@johndavis8924 3 жыл бұрын
The 5" is just a guide. You can go higher or lower if you choose based on the climate in your area. The more water in the bottom, the longer it takes to evaporate. If you live in a moist area, a lower hole may work. A higher hole in a dry climate may work better. Experiment to find out what works best for your area and post an update!

Thank you so much for this video. I have a small (understatement!) balcony on the third floor and several months ago I noticed about 6 green tree frogs living inside a pot within a pot. I’ve scoured the net trying to find suitable outdoor habitat to no avail til I found this invaluable vid. Just one question: do I need to make each one their own ie one pvc pipe per frog? I did read here someone said they had several living in one. One more question: I will most likely move (within Texas with same temps but from ocean to near a lake) in about a year +/-. Would they sustain a move or is it better to release them where they live now? The latter would make me feel so guilty since they rely on me though I know they’re wild and chose my little lush balcony as their home, and they’d most likely carry on without me!

It's fine for multiple frogs to occupy the same tube if they choose to do so (although typically frogs of different species will not do this because their different body chemistries can be harmful to each other) but if gets too crowded you may consider more tubes. However, it's not a good idea to try and move them from one region to another. They may not survive and there could be unforeseen consequences if they're introduced to another area, even if that area already has frogs of the same species.

@johndavis8924
@johndavis8924 3 жыл бұрын
It could, but you can put pieces of "mosquito dunks" (little wafer-like things with Bacillus thurengensis or BT in them) at the bottom if you want. The bacteria eliminate mosquito larvae. You can order these "dunks" online or get them at organic gardening stores.

Due to environmental pollution frogs have been slowly disappearing from ecosystems. They absorb everything through their skin and are highly susceptible to any toxins we dump into their homes, as such they're often used as an indicator of how healthy/clean an area is a lot of the time. Also a lot of people just love frogs.
