One added step in cerusing alder produces an awesome, weathered result.
This textured finish would add an extra dimension to any farmhouse table, cabinet or furniture piece

I love the look! I have a large piece of Alder that I made a dining room table with. Ive cut it down to be the tabletop in my Airstream. I love the original finish, but if I’m going to ceruse all the cabinet doors, I may as well do this as well 🤷‍♀️ I have the old golden oak cabinets from the original build 34 years ago & beautiful cedar wood shelves & my Alder wood table top. Should be interesting 🤔

I'm going to try to get that look on oak cabinets in my cabin. For the knots I'll have to use a graining tool, but I can do that during the glaze stage, then sand it lightly. I'll probably skip the brush stage since I believe the grain in my oak doors is sufficiently pronounced already. Thanks for the inspiration. Love all paint techniques. I've tried most all of them.

I definitely like the cerusing on the red oak better. Seems like a waste of good knotty alder (one of my favorite woods) especially considering the relative cost of the two woods where I'm at.... 😣. Great video though! Love that you're showing us finishing techniques but I might suggest that it's about time to move on to another one or even a different subject for a while... 😁. Thanks!

Is it possible to ceruse without painting but simply applying the glaze after roughing up the wood? I have golden oak cabinets, and would like to achieve a weathered look. I bought a pickling white glaze, and was thinking of sanding/wire brushing, applying glaze, light sanding and finishing up with a polyurethane. Not sure how this will end up, but was wondering what your professional opinion would be?

Hi Wes, just found your videos and just in time. I am going to attempt to redo my kitchen cabinets. They were built in 1991, with birch and my builder suggested I use polyurethane. They now are nasty yellowed. Can I use this method or one similar to refinish them or should I just paint them. I don't know anything about birch wood.
@WoodworkingWithWes
@WoodworkingWithWes 2 жыл бұрын
Hi...Birch has proven to be less than satisfactory for the cerusing process. Your polyurethane finish would add to the difficulty. My suggestion would be to scuff sand the finish, apply a good primer and then a final coat of paint. Hope this suggestion helps. Thanks for watching, Wes

What grit was the sanding disk? I was surprised you followed with a sanding block which smoothed it out I presume. I thought the goal was a more textured feel. I guess I don't understand the process. First you rough up the surface with drum sander or wire brush, then turn around and smooth it with palm sander and sanding pad. So, why bother roughing it in the first place? But I like the result.
@WoodworkingWithWes
@WoodworkingWithWes 3 жыл бұрын
Hi...the texturing of the raw wood highlights the grain. Then you paint. Next, sand with the palm sander 120 grit to expose the highlighted grain. Sanding with the sanding sponge smooths the entire surface evenly to prepare for the glaze coat. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching. Wes

Wes, thank you so much for your enjoyable and informative videos! This one couldn't come at a better time, it's very much what I want to do to my old kitchen cabinets. Instead of sandpaper after painting - what about lite wire brush again with the grain?

I think that might be too aggressive and only result in removing the paint you just applied. The sanding sponge smooths the finish without removing the paint. Thanks for watching, Wes

Hello my friend I am an engineer from Jordan. I love woodwork and I work in this field. I have a great passion and I love my work very much, and I always aspire to learn more. Unfortunately, the tools in Jordan are very limited, and I buy from Amazon sometimes, but with shipping costs a lot. I prepared every video of you and I love the way you work very much. Can I, if I travel to America, work for you for free and help you to learn and benefit from your experience? I have been working in this field for 8 years, but the level of woodworking in Jordan is very poor, so I will buy tools from America that are not in Jordan. I hope you accept this thing. I am currently working on expanding my work and you will help me a lot if you accept this thing. I will thank you for the rest of my life
