This is an oldie, but this is my favorite video. This video got me started with my obsession with sewing. It was a simple project and I just kept making all thing placemats from your videos. I have now gotten a little more adventurous and made many more things, but it all started from this project. Thanks for all the inspiration Lorrie! #Cricutlove

Great tutorial. I've never thought of using placemats. I like how you stand while using your machines instead of sitting. I've noticed others have copied your idea! Thank you so much for this great idea!!

Made 2 of these pouches using your excellent tutorial. They came out great. I did add something extra, though -- a cardboard bottom to give the bag more shape. I split an extra placemat in half and used each half to create a snug sleeve for the cardboard to slip into. (You can decide which side to use to match or contrast the bag's lining.) Then pushed the covered cardboard down into the body of the bag. It looks so professional and adds body. Thanks for the great project. :-)

Great idea to an already beautiful pouch! You ladies are awesome!! I've been trying to figure out how to put some structure to my makeup pouches and thought laminating a piece of cardboard then sewing fabric around it....don't know if that would work or not. Thanks again!

I love these! I do a lot of pouches, but never tried a placemat. We don't have Walmart in Scotland, but some cheaper home stores may have them, such pretty patterns! A little closer and focused on your throat plate would show the sewing even better, and I think your bobbin may be threaded incorrectly, that gives thread problems!! Thank you for the tutorial. Btw, I have a scissor button on my Janome, and it is amazing how much thread you save as it cuts 1/4 inch from the finish! :-)

Your thread problem may be that you have loaded the bobbin in the bobbin case on the machine backwards. Before loading the bobbin in the bobbin case hold the bobbin and thread up in front of you and see if you see the form of a b. Then load it. If you see a d then it is wrong. Remember b is better and d is wrong. Hope this makes sense. Loading the bobbin wrong will also cause the thread to catch under the throat plate and form what is called a bird nest and has to be dug out. This will also cause damage to your machine. SOoooooo loading the bobbin correctly is important. Hope I have helped.
@LorrieNunemaker
@LorrieNunemaker 6 жыл бұрын
Sonya Bond thanks. Thank you! It’s the right way (b) I’m not sure what was going on. It appears to be fine once I rethreaded it. I usually don’t use that machine but it’s closest to where I film. I’m sure it was user error. That machine has no speed control and it flies
@tracymclaughlinholmes677
@tracymclaughlinholmes677 6 жыл бұрын
Check you bobbin tension. If it's to loose it will "bounce" with each downward needle motion causing a birds nest mess under the cover (or wonky back thread if the bobbin tension is slightly to loose)
@mrsgennyann
@mrsgennyann 6 жыл бұрын
Also when you start sewing hold down your loose threads...otherwise they get pulled down into the bobbin area and can make a birdnest.

I’ve made 20+ of these for gifts. They’re super simple and a perfect little gift. The straight edges on this particular Pioneer Woman placemat make it easy, however, I also wanted to use the scalloped ones and thought I’d share my tips. I unstitched the binding from the two short edges and clipped it off at each corner leaving the longer scalloped edges alone. I then used a straight edge to mark a straight line and cut off the scallops. Using the salvaged binding I removed earlier, I rebound the short edges, sewed the zipper and proceeded the same way. I ignored the scallops on the long edges and just used a bit larger seam allowance pretending it was straight which left the inside seams nicely bound. I’m having a hard time finding other affordable quilted rectangle placemats but have ordered some super cute Vera Bradley placemats that should turn out just like her designer bags. Thanks for a great video.

I absolutely love these. I’ve made a ton of them. I found that if you zigzag making the corners it wont fray. Usually i went back and did this but this time i did it first. THANK YOU

I've been sewing for about 55 years! Yes! I'm old!!! LOL!! I have sewn hundreds of items but for some reason I could never get the hang of this type of zippered pouch! But I did now!!!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Love the dog too!!!😀. P. S. I usually have bobbin problems when I sew fast & stop suddenly to remove a pin or clip! Also I've had bobbin problems when the machine needle is dull! I was told by a very good sewing machine repairman in middle Tennessee, where I get my machines serviced, that the needle should be changed after every project because they dull easy & synthetic fabrics such as polyester dull needles very quickly! It may cost you a little extra in needles but it's so worth it! Also, from the sound of your machine, it may need to be serviced! Also bobbin problems usually signal that your upper tension is out of wack! That's one thing I can not remedy so I take my machine or machines to have them serviced!

This is my favorite tutorial! I have made several bags with the placemats and you would think I would have this memorized! It’s nice to play while I’m sewing up bags! I have several made and I plan on using the Cricut to monogram them and/or also put an inspirational quote. #Cricutlove
