In this painting demo video, I’ll share with you how I create an intuitive abstract landscape painting by employing lines to emphasize form and direction. I’ll explain the benefits of giving a 15-minute warm-up art exercise a second and in this case, a third try and how it can lead to leveling up your art skills.
As an artist, I’ve found that diving into a warm-up painting can stir the creativity needed to enhance our connection with intuitive abstract painting. Join me as I tackle a prompt from "50 Abstract Warm-Up Painting Prompts" (www.etsy.com/l...) that’s both a challenge and a catalyst for growth. With phthalo blue, cadmium orange, mars black, and titanium white on my palette, or the closest hues you have at hand, we embark on a journey to construct an abstract landscape using lines that vary in thickness and trajectory, all converging into an intuitive art piece.

In the world of intuitive abstract painting, every brush stroke is a potential conversation, and as you'll see in this acrylic painting demo, I follow the direction the painting leads me in. The first try taught me lessons, the second brought me closer to where I wanted to be, and now, I’m excited to share the progress that these warm-up paintings have fostered. It’s in these repeated attempts that the true benefits of the exercise shine through. Each session builds muscle memory for brush handling, hones color mixing, and solidifies composition understanding.
But beyond technique, this painting exercise is about discovering a more spontaneous and efficient approach to abstract landscape painting. You'll see how each abstract warm-up painting allows for a fresh perspective, pushing creativity, and inviting innovation. And let's not forget the confidence that comes with practice-confidence that imbues every decision and brushstroke.
So, why not grab your brushes and follow along as I guide you through my process in this intuitive abstract painting adventure? By the end of this video, you'll not only witness the transformation of an abstract landscape painting but also grasp the benefits of a warm-up exercise done thrice. It’s a true testament to how repeating a challenge can truly level up your art skills. Let’s get those creative juices flowing and start painting!
And remember, keep on painting!

It was really interesting seeing how you added the lines so freely. Not necessarily following along colour joins. Lines overlapping and in different directions. Its not an approach I would have thought of. Im going to try giving this a go when I get the chance. 😊
@chrisloudart
@chrisloudart Ай бұрын
I think you hit the nail on the head when you said "freely". This is one of those 'coloring outside the lines" type of free flow intuitive ways of creating. Our minds naturally go to following the paths laid out by the paint and in some instances I did that, but I tried to let my hand lead me as much as possible. Let me know how it goes! 😊

Hi Chris, me again thanking you for another inspiring warm up. Something wonderful happened when you were marking the lines in the middle blue section. Loved your comment...and it was such a feeling of déja vu because I wrote a comment almost exactly the same on another artist's KZfaq channel/video. At a point in their demonstration, I felt like I was somehow actually IN the process because I "felt" their thinking in my own body and mind. It's a magical thing, and I'm so, so grateful for Chris, and for all of the artists sharing so transparently on KZfaq. 🙏

@@chrisloudart oh, thanks for your reply, acrylics, id love to be less lazy and have the courage to express myself in colours on surfaces, id come to conclusion that what i try to do on surfaces is too clunky and i lack the routine of playing with colors more often and with less stress, and also id probably try more drawing which later would be colored more, rather than the classic painting appproach, also ive been drawing more in high school and clay modelling and never touched colors untill i was 27. ill start the 50 abstract tests from your lovely pdf file and will see if i can learn anything from that. once again thank you very much, your works are amazing

@@bodyhater Thank you so much! I think one of the best ways to jump in and learn color is to limit your palette and paint with only a few colors. It helps you grasp which colors work well together and what additional colors you can create by mixing them.

Try it with a paint brush. I've done that with other projects. I'll admit it didn't come out quite as smooth for me, but still has a good look. Haha, yep, I think she gave me a thumbs up on this one.🐈‍⬛👍

Hi again Chris- question about the fine tip applicator you often use with mars black, do you just put straight paint in there, or do you mix the paint with a medium? And if straight paint, what brand or what consistency of paint, as I know there are several variations. Thanks.
@chrisloudart
@chrisloudart Ай бұрын
Hey Ann! I typically mix my paint with a little water or airbrush medium to thin it out. You can use high flow paint as is in the fine tip applicators, but I like mixing my own. I use Winsor Newton Galeria or Liquitex Basics which are both medium body paints. I hope that helps. Here is a video I made showing how I mix the paint and fill the bottles. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5yHdtt6t6qUfpc.html
