Cloth can be pretty tough to get right in Blender... In this video let's explore three easy features that can make the cloth simulation pipeline bend and fold with ease. 😅 👇
Learn all about sculpting fabric using clay in this course from CG Cookie: b3d.cgcookie.com/clay-fabric-yt
You can also learn how to paint realistic fabric wrinkles and folds in this short course: b3d.cgcookie.com/shade-fabric-yt
If you have dared to explore the cloth physics properties available in Blender, you are likely
aware of just how many buttons, sliders, and numbers are involved in working with cloth
simulations.
While there are a lot of small-scale tweaks that you can make to things such as the
air viscosity and mass of the cloth, there really is limited out-of-the-box control for how you can
interact with your simulation from a dynamic standpoint. You’ll find endless use-cases to fold
and drape cloth, but very little in the way of tools to get that done.
In this video, we unlock your cloth-control by exploring three small features that when used
together can exercise great influence over the manipulation and design of your fabrics. By
keeping things simple, we are going to enable ourselves to develop interesting cloth designs all
in realtime, making tweaks incredibly fast and efficient!

Great tutorial! I have a question, though. Once you have the simulation at the point where you want it, how do you make it static? I want to make curtains for a scene in a separate file, but I want the curtains to stay the same as they are on say, frame 90 of the simulation and not change anymore.
@cg_cookie
@cg_cookie 3 жыл бұрын
Once you pause the animation, you'll be able to sift through cached frames to see what the simulation looks like at each frame. However, to make it truly a static mesh, you will need to apply the Cloth modifier in your modifier stack. I normally just do "Mesh>Convert To>Mesh from Curve" in my 3D viewport buttons because it applies all my modifiers for me. If you only apply the Cloth modifier but you have others, it may give u weird results so normally you should apply them all. -Chunck

3 жыл бұрын
Why does the simulation doesn't react the same with this method versus just scaling the cloth object on the x axis? What is the difference between constraint scaling and regular scaling?
@myztazynizta
@myztazynizta 3 жыл бұрын
This whole thing feels linke an unreliable unintended side effect. Hooking verts to empties or rigging them to bones seems like a more natural sounding way this might be done.
3 жыл бұрын
@@myztazynizta Yeah when I saw what he was intending to do I thought we was going to use hooks or bones. I suspect that the constraints system has something different in it's coding since the constraints are also used in armature constrains and deforming. So even if it's the same thing that happens (scaling) it might not come from the same system and not interact in the same way with simulations.
@Yacine3Dz
@Yacine3Dz 3 жыл бұрын
I think the difference is when you scale in the normal way you will scale the actual faces of the object so the distance between each vertex will change, but if scale it the way he did using this constraint thing the distance between each vertex will be preserved. That is the only way I could Understand it.
@cg_cookie
@cg_cookie 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, sorry for the late reply! As was already stated, when we scale the cloth directly, it will uniformly scale down the mesh. However, by using a constraint object on only a few vertices (from our vertex group), I can scale in that row which will preserve the faces of the rest of the mesh, and those ripples/folds will form as a result. Great for making drapes! As well, if you scale a cloth object during an animation, you're likely just going to have a bad time because the simulation won't really know what to do with the scaling of this physics object. -Chunck
@KevinSmith-qi5yn
@KevinSmith-qi5yn 3 жыл бұрын
I think it has to do with caches being overwritten. When you are scaling an object actively, you are changing it's mesh data and the physics overwrites the object's vertex buffer. When you use a constraint, the objects geometry stays the same while the constraint changes.

Very good video. I'm struggling to pin my cloth to my animated character. I create a vertex group, check the pinning option in cloth simulation and parent the cloth with my model like it's written in the documentation, but the cloth remains pinned to the beginning point and doesn't follow my character. Can someone help me, please?
@cg_cookie
@cg_cookie 3 жыл бұрын
I've never tried actually parenting it to something else before, but I get the sense that it may be what's giving you trouble. What I would try is actually joining the cloth mesh to the character mesh, rather than parenting it because the parent relation ship may not be appropriately translating the cloth to match the character during the simulation (is my guess) and so it just floats at the start. -Chunck :)
@gianluca3131
@gianluca3131 3 жыл бұрын
@@cg_cookie ok, first off, thanks a lot for the advice. But just to be sure since I'm a complete noob when you say "join" you mean ctr+j to merge the cloth and the character together? Because when I do that the cloth loses the simulation and stays froze anyway (i tried pinning and not pinning with the same result). Well probably I'm skipping some other important operation i don't know :D, thanks again.
@cg_cookie
@cg_cookie 3 жыл бұрын
@@gianluca3131 Yep, you got it! But now I am realizing that this method wouldn't actually work... Because when you join them you would require the entire character now also having a cloth simulation. So, that won't work! Make sure you've got the cloth parented to the character and not the other way around. Sorry about that, hope you figure it out! -Chunck :)

@3DCGdesign
@3DCGdesign 3 жыл бұрын
@@gianluca3131 I'm sure you figured it out - but here's what works for me in Blender 2.91 (like if making a super man cape for example) - I used an "Empty>Plain Axes" object to control the scale of my verts at the top of my curtain, just like in the tutorial above. Set the origin you want for your Curtain/Cape object to be center of bone or geometry you want to use to control the position. Now you would Add a Constraint "Copy Location" to the Cape Object (maybe need to add same type of constraint also for the Plain Axes Empty object, or parent the scale axes to the head object, not sure.) Then you would set Target Object for the Copy Location Constraint to your Neck Bone or Head Bone of your character. Set Target and Owner for the constraint to "Local Space". Now your animation of the Head Bone should drive the position of that Cape Object. Animating the scale object and the position of the head object now effects the Cape Object. In cloth physics I changed Air Viscosity in "Physical Properties" to 5 and it doesn't flop everywhere so much. So viscosity is something to play with. I also set self collisions for the cotton cloth at distance .005 (cape is 2m tall)
