Hello Randy. Thank you for your incredible videos. You explain your code and formatting very well and although your videos are not mean to be entertaining, they move along quickly enough that they are easily digestible and are entertaining in their own way. I have learnt so many useful tricks that are difficult to put together when searching for just a one off piece of code, because your projects often show the creation process from blank canvas to finished product. This makes incorporating features into my own sheets so much easier. I particularly liked how you took the time today to explain some of the logic behind the coding very clearly line by line - this makes it easier to apply in other settings without having to just blindly copy your macros verbatim. You are making my own sheets not only work well but look so impressive that my colleagues are beginning to think that I am some kind of excel genius! I feel rather guilty and am starting to think that I owe you some of my bonus! I am really looking forward to the future episodes for this project and think that this will be the most useful 'full project' so far. Thank you for your videos, I am enjoying your presentation style immensely and I hope you continue to enjoy your work for a long time so we can all continue to learn from you. Thanks again for your contribution to helping us understand the murky world of VBA. You are a gem!

This is outstanding. While I don't want to use this for an employee manager, it is perfect for something else I want to do. I cannot wait to see how you incorporate the employee drop down. One thing that would be perfect for me is if you show how to create a dashboard on a second sheet based on data in sheet one. Using your example, I would need a table with all employees on the left, then a conditionally formatted cell for several columns showing red, yellow, or green based on a date range.
@ExcelForFreelancers
@ExcelForFreelancers 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, thanks very much. I am going to add the Employee Drop Down list in Part 2 (tomorrow), so that should be very good since its pulling them from a different sheet and I will incorporate auto-complete with that as well. Concerning the Dashboard with data from different sheets I have a full 15 hour course coming up on that within a few weeks so stay tuned. It will blow your mind> Conditional formatting based on Date Ranges would be relatively easy. You are GENIUS & the greatest VBA instructor. Liked & definately subscribed. Thanks millions for your time, hard work & valuable tutorial. Looking for more lesson. Is that possible to have the employee profile not in the Tab section but on seperate section. Ex: Employee Profile is on upper section, lower section is where the tabs are. You will have the search for the Employee ID or name. When the EmployeeID changes, the contents in Tabs will also change based on EmployeeID. Thanks a lot!

HI and thanks so much. Yes certainly it is possible. You can add the general information on the upper area and then use the lower rows to switch tabs. Your search field can be above. Thank you Randy, It is an amazing, amazing, and very amazing video. Just a small note, I am now in minute 27:13. I think to fix the issue of the line you have to delet the lower line of row 84 and add an upper line to row 85.

Hi thanks so much. Yes you can also see in future videos we want to show the upper line of 85, the lower line of 84 is hidden when row 84 is hidden. This same example comes up a few times in Part 2 as well. You are exactly right i cover this also. Thanks so much for watching.

Hi Randy. Great work as always. Thanks so much for the excellent content. An idea for the tabs to avoid problems if you need to land on a zero. I think an easy way is to number the cells and format them to show the tab name. That way you just have an increasing list of numbers. The new appearing list will have the same numbers as the list above or below so the calculations are the same as the rest already shown in your video.

Hi Randy, thank you very much for your videos, I have learned a lot with them, good job!, I would suggest you to create a new app like this but this time creating a database with Access, that would be amazing, Thanks again for your contribution and your patience explaining your macros, Greeting from Mexico city :)
@ExcelForFreelancers
@ExcelForFreelancers 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, Thanks so much for your comment. I have used Access and i know how powerful it can be. However I am trying to share the idea that Excel can be used independently as an application. The reason for this is when you eventually create and market your own applications, you can then sell these applications around the world, and your customers would need nothing other then Excel. I hope this helps and thanks.

Thanks for these videos. I have been following them and working out the tutorials to help learning VBA and it's been very helpful. For the part where you hide the cells and show the correct ones when you select a tab, I made the sheet a different size and couldn't make the same formula you used work (the one where you multiply by 20) so I did a more manual process of hiding the rows using range.().hidden = true/false. Is there any negative impacts of doing this other than having more code? Part of the reason I stick with this is because I am still trying to understand those parts as well and wanted to experiment with the syntax of those as well, ontop of not being able to get the other formula to work.
@ExcelForFreelancers
@ExcelForFreelancers Жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed the training. Manual is just fine. If you call out the specific rows, that is going to work without any problems. I did the multiplication by 20 just to reduce writing code and to demonstrate a possible shortcut. It makes perfect sense the way you have done it. In other training videos, I have done it this way as well. I hope this helps and thanks so much.

Superb Video! One Question: If I duplicate (copy) the worksheet (Employee 1, Employee 2, etc) what steps need to be taken to ensure that the macros still work properly? My goal is to have multiple worksheets (for multiple employees) that all have the working tabs. Thanks!!!
@ExcelForFreelancers
@ExcelForFreelancers 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Vagary. If you copy the worksheet and all the macros, the one thing you want to make sure of is that the sheet #'s are accurate. For example in the original workbook the sheet numbers may be "Sheet1" however in the new workbook they may be "Sheet2". So that would be the most important thing to check. I hope this helps. What about doing a search criteria, salary above or below ... and viewing those results. Thank you once again for your inspirational tutorial videos.

HI Neren, Thanks very much for your comment. This application could really do whatever 'We' want it to, It's going to be based on yours and everyone suggestions. HR is a massive industry that could really use an application to help solve some of the problems they have. If we have that salary in a table, then we add filters to that table we can then filter all staff based on that salary. (If they are hourly we can also extrapolate the annual pay based on hours per week and weeks per year) We will have an employee table and perhaps we can add filtering into this table. I will add your comments and suggestions to the list. Thanks so much for your feedback

Looks professional. What if you need to add rows into payroll history? why not create 4 identical sheets, the tab selection gets you to the proper sheet? that way you can keep adding rows.
@ExcelForFreelancers
@ExcelForFreelancers 5 жыл бұрын
The Actual Payroll history data will be on a completely different sheet, so there will be unlimited rows for payroll history. The Employee detail will just show 15 or so payroll histories however I will add a 'Show All' button which will take the user to the Payroll history sheet which will show them all. The idea is to separate the front end 'Employee Manager sheet' with the back end data. This way in future versions we can add Multi-User sharing so that multiple people can edit this workbook at the same time. This week coming this Tuesday I will show you the same idea in Attachments, where the Employee Manager sheet only shows 6 of the most recent attachments, but with one click, a user is taken to the entire attachments sheet and is filtered by employee. Part 4 out tomorrow. Thanks so much for your comment and question.

Hi Randy Here’s a quandary for you. I Have been at this one nearly all day, I have the horizontal tabs working perfectly. However, with the vertical tabs, in your video course you have calculated, within the VBA, the selected row down to 1 through to 4 to make the visible rows show correctly, however, if you have more than 9 controls vertically, this causes a minus figure + the target row which will give you the incorrectly shown rows, I have tried to calculate to the last 2 digits using SelRow = Right(ActiveCell.Row, 2) which then causes an issue with the calculations to get the target rows to show. Have you a workaround or solution for more than 9 vertical controls? I hope that all makes sense? I am using this lesson in conjuction with your latest video on Fleet expenses. Thanks Adrian
@ExcelForFreelancers
@ExcelForFreelancers 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Adrian, thanks so much for your comment. Using a calculation to switch vertical tabs is a cool trick because it allows you to use a single macro for all tabs. However it is not necessary and can be a bit confusing. If you want you can always use separate macros for each tab, hiding the exact rows you want. such as .Range(5 & ":" & 15).entireRow.hidden = false. The manual way, on a per row basis takes a bit more time to program but its also a lot more straight forward then using the complicated formula, especially when things are not even. Thanks so much.

Much appreciated Randy. Thank you so much for the reply. I think I will try that. Also will this make any difference if I have my cells equally merged? With the merged cells I was able to run horizontal tabs. But vertical tabs I am not able to. Is there anything I need to keep in mind when dealing with merged cells? I have used target.count > 4 As my I have 4 cells merged together. I guess am in the right direction. Please guide me.
@ExcelForFreelancers
@ExcelForFreelancers 5 жыл бұрын
HI Avi, yes you have the right idea with the Target.Count > 4 based on merged cells. We want to try to avoid merged cells when we can. I use them of course just not as often. When having multiple horizontal and vertical tabs it requires good planning and good design. It's no fun to make changes after your coding is done and the math can get tricky. Try to keep things clear, like use 100 rows per tab, so that its much easier. You can use the merged cells but just make sure that they are contained in a single group to be shown or hidden.

@@ExcelForFreelancers To be honest ..... I struggled to learn VBA before the advent of youtube. In 1994 or so I delved into MSFT and vba .... Over the years learned lots ... But the one thing that got me learning more and more was the macro recorder. And then "DEBUGGING" the code, aka stepping through code one line at a time, the recorder isn't perfect but what is. With the advent of people like EFF here that has ready made books... Download them and then step through the code behind buttons. You will learn quite quickly. Just my $0.02

This is a two part comment/request. First i have been following along on many of your videos, great job. Is it possible to add more lines to each of the vertical tabs. Instead of 25 i would like to use 30 or more. I have tried multiple times but it is not working. Also, with vertical tabs i would like to use a second or third vertical tab in some of the other horizontal tabs. Will it be the same code or do i need to rename it to a specific one? Thanks

Hi Wayne, thanks very much for your comment. it is certainly possible to add more rows to each tab. You would just have to adjust the formula within the code to accommodate this. Since I cannot see your workbook and code it would be difficult for me to determine the actual issue you are facing. Vertical tabs can be used in any # of horizontal tabs. The best would be two start a new workbook (instead of customizing mine) and plan out the entire tab process, mapping out all of the rows and columns, then programming it based on those conditions. I hope this helps. For the last portion pertaining to the vertical Tabs on payroll detail I have 8 sections not 4, so after I select the 5 to 8 tabs it bugs. I believe the section of code can be done a little differently to accommodate First time trying VBA out

Good ideas. Any thoughts on why excel 2016 does not want to accept the ":" command?

Hi James, it depends what line that is in and what language pack installed. (I doubt its a 2016 issue). I hope this helps. Ooh this looks like fun. I've just done something similar but my code is as clumsy as a dysphasic penguin. I wonder if I can squeeze this into lunchtime?

HI Philip, Thanks so much. It's been so long since i have run into a dysphasic penguin, so I would not worry too much. If your lunchtime is at least an hour you can squeeze it in. I always appreciate your comments and suggestions.
