The Power of Permaculture: Self-Sufficient Garden and Country with Compost and Hügelkultur
About 5 years ago I bought a piece of land and started to build a sustainable life in harmony with nature. I adopted the permaculture philosophy and created raised vegetable beds by applying all types of compost (including bokashi).
In this video, I want to make you discover the power of compost, show you how you can create and implement vegetable gardens with the hügelkultur method and introduce you to the magical world of bokashi compost.
**What is Compost?
Compost is a soil conditioner formed by the breakdown of organic waste by microorganisms. Composting is nature's miracle of recycling. You can make compost from your household waste, garden waste and even animal manure.
*Compost Types:*
There are many different types of compost. In the video I will show you the most commonly used compost types and how they are made.
Hot Compost: Hot compost is a type of compost that matures rapidly at high temperatures. It takes 3-4 weeks to make compost with this method.
Cold Compost Cold compost is a type of compost that matures at lower temperatures and in a longer time. Composting with this method can take 3-6 months.
Vermicompost: a type of compost made by earthworms. It takes 3-4 months to make compost with this method.
Bokashi Compost: Bokashi compost is a special type of compost made with lactic acid bacteria and fermentation process. It is ideal for composting your kitchen waste quickly and easily. No odour in a stuffy environment. It is ideal for those living in apartments and cities.
What is Hügelkultur?
Hügelkultur is a method of creating raised vegetable beds using wood and other organic materials. This method helps to aerate the soil, increase its water holding capacity and increase its nutritional value.
