For those having issues in 3.0, I've found it only accepts JPG files for images and mp4 for video, and for stretching instead of a math node use VECTOR MATH

I left this comment a while back, but it seems like including a link automatically marks your comment as spam, no matter what that link actually is (it was to an image trying to explain the concept better), so while that's being resolved I'm gonna duplicate my comment without the link: The reason why dividing by Z works is that normal coordinates are on a sphere. By dividing by Z, you essentially transform all points on this sphere into a plane, because Z will always be 1 afterwards.

not 2 days ago I was trying to do this for what was probably the 4th time in my life, and then my favourite blender KZfaqr makes a video and solves all my problems in 5 minutes.

The pincushion distortion is due to the fact that the corners of the image are further away from the projector than its center (if you trace a ray from the projector lens straight to the center of the projected image, its path is shorter than that of a ray aimed to one of the corners). The further away from the projector, your screen is, the bigger the projected image will appear to be. By moving the screen twice as far from the lens, the image will appear twice as big. The Z coordinate represents how much further away the corners are from the lens compared to the center. By dividing the mapping coordinates by Z, what you do is actually scaling down that part of the image to compensate for the increased distance. In a nutshell: Double the distance? Then scale the image by half. This way its projection will be constant in size.

Oh.. Thats how to fix distortion. Welp.. I just place plane with trasparent shader with image texture in front on white colored spot light, to simulate projector, and it just works fine

I just tried this, and the last step caused the image to go from square or rectangular to round, and also flipped it upside down.

I created a project on projectors by projecting a CG Matter tutorial On making projectors. So inside my project of projecting projectors I projected the projector tut onto a plane with a projected texture to make my project on projectors that much more projeted across my audience. :) PS: I did none of this…

I don't really have a straightforward answer to give but, as he was explaining this I was envisioning a darkroom in the corner, with a chair blanket fort and a small projector watching old movies. As the light bounces around and illuminates old cardboard games stacked on top of each other and popcorn laying on the ground. I guess it's because of the idea he helped inspire.

The dividing by Z thing didn't work for me, I don't know why. The projector works fine without it(except its pincushioned) but when I put the divide by Z thing on the projection gets severely distorted.

when I divide my z my image gets stretched beyond repair. I have tried adjusting the scaling but not works it just becomes distorted and a blur of colour.

For whatever reason when I try to correct the distortion, the projected image goes away and becomes distorted lines. How do I fix that?

I believe its a thing about normal map calculation and vector calculus. Maybe it could be a spheric projection, when you divide by the Z axis ir gives you only the results of the plane XY, or in spherical coordinates, the vector R in terms of θ and r
