Video #735: A quick demo and product review of some new silkscreens that work beautifully with polymer clay... More Info: www.beadsandbea... Polymer Clay Tutor.
In today's video I demonstrate some new Silk Screen Stencils (CreateAlong Brand), that Ilysa Ginsburg and Kira Sly from Polymer Clay TV, sent over to me.
If you are not familiar with silkscreens, they are fine decorative mesh stencils, with a polymer that is infused into the screen. They were originally created from silk, but are now made with nylon.
You can push paint through the open areas of the mesh stencil patterns, that will leave beautifully intricate designs on the surface of flat sheets of polymer clay.
I received six stencil designs that came packaged in a large organza bag (a nice touch). They are 100 mesh screens (100 threads per inch), which makes them relatively fine. The fine mica paints from Lumiere by Jacquard, work nicely with these stencils. I wouldn't recommend using thicker texture pastes or glitter paints.
In the video I also show some examples of other silkscreens on the market, the Sculpey Silk Screens and the Art Screens by Heidi Swapp, both of which are much smaller than the Create Along Screens.
The patterns I received include... Lacey Vines, Squidley, Triple Tapestry, Dotty Stitches, Leaf Cyclone and Hex Flowers. There are some links to these products below the video.
I show samples of each of the designs printed onto different colors of raw Souffle Clay, as well as some completed projects using the sampler sheets.
You usually print silkscreen designs onto raw polymer clay with acrylic paints/inks. I used several different Jacquard paints including, Lumiere, Versatex Screen Printing Ink, Professional Screen Printing Ink and NeoOpaque. Let the paint dry before cutting, forming and baking into you finished pieces. This method will heat set the paint and make it permanent bond with the polymer clay for a very durable finish.
You can also rub dry products through the screen such as PearlEx Powders, Chalk Pastels, etc. Just be sure that the product is water based, so as to not damage the screen.
In the video I demo how to use the silk screens properly and show tips for taking care of your screens and not damaging them.
What I really like about these silkscreens is the variety of designs (around 40 right now). I believe Ilysa and/or Kira are actually drawing the designs themselves. I also like that the screens are quite large so you can use them on larger sheets of polymer clay if you wish. They are reasonably priced at around $15 US each.

It's easy to make your own silk screens for clay on the Cricket. You can customize them to whatever you like. They are also reusable.

You said to make sure you take with paint side up, I'm curious how you baked the roll on the pendant. It's really beautiful. I would like to give it a try.

Thanks this was very helpful. So after your done baking some of my pieces need some sanding on the side and backs, but I used the silk screen on the top of my pieces. My question is I need to sand the backs and sides and usually give them a little bath. Can I still do that without ruining the paint? I plan on sealing my pieces afterwards but not sure about the sanding process that i normally do?? Help please 😊

I love all this, but the rustic necklace hanging in the back....wow. my question is about that today. How is it connected. It's in-between the beads but the beads don't look like it's supporting the rod. I have my first craft fair in November and would like to have some like it. Thanks for all you do for us minions out here.🤪

The cords are just running through a channel/loop at the top of the pendant and then through the beads. Nothing too complicated. Thank you for the kind comments! 💖

Question: If you have already baked a piece, like your earrings in the video, and you decide after baking to put acrylic paint on the sides and the back, do you have to bake it again or can you just let the paint dry and then seal it with a glaze? Great video by the way thank you for it!

You don't have to bake it again, but t does make it more durable if it is heat set.

I saw a video recently where someone used a garlic press with air dry clay to make noodles for a tiny bowl of soup. I wonder if this trick could work with polymer clay as well?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 8 жыл бұрын
You can try but it will be hard to push the clay through a garlic press unless you use extremely soft clay and a weightlifter to squeeze it for you. :)

Anastey Lovely I've used a garlic press several times for such things as hair on characters I've made. It wasn't hard at all for me and it worked quite well.

Peroxide shouldn't hurt your polymer clay pieces, but I would test it on a piece that isn't too precious to you, to be sure.

+Rhonda Magee I don't only make large earrings... Just last week I did a video with a 'Million and One' earrings and although many are large, some were small too. I do love making large statement earrings with polymer clay though, because the material is so lightweight and so versatile, it makes the perfect material for large pieces.

+Rhonda Magee then good thing she isn't making them for you lol. If you like the design, scale it down to suit your taste.
