Hi, the ribbon I bought was 3/8" wide and 50 yards long from Walmart. I didn't cut the ribbon until I was done making the lei. I would guess that I used about 5-6 yards of each color to make it.

Hey, what did you mean by “the longer end should always be in front” & which sides go up, the shiny side or the tough rough, thanks! ☺️

Hi! The longer end of the ribbon is the part that’s not tied together at the start (it’s the part that has the rest of the roll of ribbon). When forming a loop, that part should be in front. The ribbon that I used didn’t have a shiny side. But here’s what you can do if you have 1 shiny side and 1 matte side. For the 1st loop and wrap around, the matte side should face up. Then, when you make a loop (on the right side) to insert in previous loop, the shiny side should face up. When you make the next loop (on the left side), the matte side should face up. If you continue doing this, the shiny part of the ribbons should appear on the left and right side of the lei. I really hope this made sense.
