There is absolutely 100% a link between creatine and DHT levels, and there is also a link between DHT levels and hair loss, so yeah the only rational thing to assume is that creatine does in fact cause hair loss for people with sensitive androgen receptors or who were already skirting the line on DHT levels.

If they are prone to it, then yes either way they are likely to lose their hair. No reason to speed it up though. That is just a personal choice after weighing pros and cons. I'm not arguing for or against using it for this reason, I'm just putting the info out there.

Here is one; www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19741313 "RESULTS: After 7 days of creatine loading, or a further 14 days of creatine maintenance dose, serum T levels did not change. However, levels of DHT increased by 56% after 7 days of creatine loading and remained 40% above baseline after 14 days maintenance (P < 0.001). The ratio of DHT:T also increased by 36% after 7 days creatine supplementation and remained elevated by 22% after the maintenance dose (P < 0.01)." This is actually not the one that I read in the past, which just means there are multiple studies, but this should do. If you're interested, I'm sure a little googling and medical journal database searches can lead you to more, I'm not going to spend a terribly long time digging a bunch up though.

Here is one concerning the role of dihydrotestosterone in androgenetic alopecia which is the androgen based balding pattern I mentioned: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28294070 This makes no mention of creatine, you have to apply the knowledge from the other study I linked.. "Conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, a more potent androgen, by the enzyme 5-a-reductase is responsible for underlying pathogenesis" -- as mentioned in the other study I linked, creatine significantly increases the rate at which this testosterone to DHT conversion occurs, so you just have to connect the dots. Interestingly, men with BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or enlarged prostate) take medications to prevent T from converting to DHT because the resulting androgens are what trigger the prostate to grow. That same compound, however, is simultaneously responsible for balding problems because of the sensitivity of androgen receptors at hair follices. Men who take medication to prevent the conversation of T into DHT tend to see a reverse of this problem and their hair often grows back, this is proof that androgen levels are responsible for the balding. So, to review: 1.) Androgens are responsible for prostate enlargement and balding 2.) Androgens are a byproduct of T conversion into DHT 3.) Creatine has been proven to SIGNIFICANTLY increase T conversion to DHT 4.) It follows logically that any substance which increases DHT levels will necessarily increase symptoms known to be caused by increased DHT levels 5.) Creatine increases likelihood of balding (and prostate enlargement too for that matter).

I think I agree with you man. I've used creatine for a while now, and I've noticed lately that my hair looks thinner some places on the top of my head. And that's weird because I'm just 25 and both my parents have really good hair. My father is 60 and STILL has all his hair! So for me, I suspect creatine may have caused this for me, so I stopped using it today.

In fact, I have started taking it now for almost two months, and while I feel great, my hair is notably falling more than usual, but I intend to keep going because at my age I want a natural supp that help with the gains and creatine is somehow “it”. Having said all that, clearly many people don’t get that effect from creatine. It depends on the person. So hopefully it wouldn’t happen to you. and in my case, I am hoping it won’t get worse :-)

same experience guys. Everytime I came home from uni and I had access to my creatine again, I got dandruff and my hair began shredding. Since I've been home for 5 weeks I've been taking it without much thought and the hair at the back as started thinning like crazy and I've had dandruff. Stopped taking creatine the other day and surprise surprise, the dandruff stopped and I stopped shredding so much hair. I know there is little scientific study between creatine causing hair loss but I'm just sharing my anecdotal experience. I'm sad I didn't stop it sooner.

hate to break the news to you, but,,,, your experiencing exactly what i went through when i was 22 bout to turn 23, natural hair loss. no creatine back then, just crappy genetics when it came to hair, i always had thin fine limp hair til it was gone. i'm not sure if creatine has anything to do with it but i'm not a scientist. it started in the shower with gobs of hair going down and clogging the drain. i noticed that i had more than usual hair loss on my shirts as i wore them, bed pillows and sheets, on my car seat, etc.. i was terrified at the time and it destroyed what confidence i had then. i can understand the loss at 42, 52, or age 62, not 22, i'm in the prime of my life, it made me instantly older looking than i was, another words, it robbed my youth so to speak. it took a long time adjusting to this, prolly mid 30's or so, til i started shaving because it was starting to be cool to shave. now i don't have a problem with it and i'm comfortable with it. i don't take creatine now, still not sure of it, it hasn't been around long enough to see what the longevity results are, sooo,,,,, i dunno. if i were you, i wouldn't take creatine. just my 2c,, not only for your present health and hair, but the future as well. i hope you don't lose your hair, your too young and it was devastating for my youthful confidence. it could be the creatine, then again, it could just be your hair genetics. keep us posted bout it, hope the best for you. btw, i used to wash my hair 1-2 times every day along with putting gobs of hair gel and spray and other products on my hair. i dunno if that had anything to do with it , but if i had to do it all over again, i wouldn't do all that, i would just wash it every other day or longer. hope everything works out for you. keep us posted. peace.

Good to know and consider. I suppose one could react differently than another. I used creatine over 15 years ago. (35 now) I cycled it usually 12 weeks on, and maybe 1-2 weeks off - anywhere from 3-6 months out of the year. I did this 3-4 years out of my life. Some years I would leave creatine out of my diet entirely and life carried on. I did this between age 18-25 and it was the only a supplement, in addition, to my hearty regular food diet. I buzzed my hair due to the pandemic, and I still have a full set of hair. I just recently started taking creatine and I will keep a eye on things. Cool video. God bless everyone, November 2020.

Thanks David let me know how it goes. I been working out hard and been supplementing creative for the last three months and honestly noticed something odd. The hairs on my legs are almost all gone minus couple of areas with some strands. It made me go wtf and I started looking at my hair and it to me is noticeably thinner in the top front area. I don’t have a receding hairline but the hair itself isn’t thick like it use to be. I can only single out creating, pre workout, and getting back to lifting as the culprits. It’s sad to know working out with its testosterone producing effects may trigger dht stimulation and thus maybe accelerating people who are prone or genetically prone to hair loss. I’m stopping all my creatine and backing off my pre workouts.

The hair thinning process takes 6 to 9 months to cause it to fall. Most probable thing is that you have natural hair loss, because your hair shouldn't fall directly but only 6 month after taking it. If it fall nows it's because it has been thinning 6 months ago.

Part - 1 Creatine in the body helps to retain salt. In the body, salt (sodium chloride or table salt) absorbs water, sometimes too much water. This metabolic process happens at the cellular level. This means that the presence of excess salt causes the body to lose too much water, which is why when taking Creatine, the muscles look defined and the skin appears thin (lack of water). (Don't drink enough water and consume a bit of extra table salt, well then you will create the same effects in your body, no need for creatine !!). Now what has all these to do with the price of milk (hair loss)? Well, having extra salt in the body without enough water creates salt crystals on the surface of the skin when sweating (if we sweat at all !). The salt crystals block the pores on the skin and also on a deeper physiological level, creates vasoconstriction in the capillaries that supply blood to the hair follicles. If you look at a head which is completely bald, you will notice that it has a defined line that goes around the scalp. Why such a defined line? why a bald person's head doesn't entirely go bald? I mean up to the ears on the side and up to the neck at the back? another question is: Why is it that 99% of women don't go bald? does testosterone play a role in balding men? can oestrogen play a role in women's body to protect them from going bald? why is it that bald men who undergo cortisone injection therapy to their scalp regrow a full head of hair? is there a connection between the defined receding line on a balding head, testosterone, accumulation of salt crystals within the capillaries of the scalp hairs, blocking oestrogen receptors by following a low fat diet and heavy lifting (strong muscle contractions)? Stay tuned for part - 2 in the next couple of days , here in this comment section!

Creatine does increase DHT (dihydrotestosterone) and it worsens my acne every time I have tried it. I am 29 and I am still prone to acne on my face and body. Its not as bad as when I was younger, but caffeine worsens it and creatine too. I have tried creatine a few times thinking "maybe this time it wont give me acne if I watch my diet and dont drink caffeine", but it still messes up my skin. By the way, I do not take steroids and I never will because I have no doubt they will give me horrible acne, unless I try SARMS, but for the moment, I cannot do those either for job reasons. Hell, I wanted to try D-aspartic acid (raised natural testosterone production), and I read a review of a guy who didnt have any acne for years, and, after a month of taking D-aspartic acid, said he got pretty bad acne and stopped using it. Acne went away when he stopped. Another guy stopped using it and the acne didnt go away until a few weeks later. I guess we have to take the slower route if we want clear skin and hair.

First of all... Hair loss and male bolding pattern are TWO TOTALLY different things. When you suffer from male bold pattern you do not shed hair like a dog, it simply goes through a process on miniaturization of the actual hair ( only certain areas of your scalp ). Male bolding pattern is produced by excess of DHT ( Dihydrotestosterone ) and it is purely genetical and hereditary. Hair loss ( shedding ) can be caused by a great number of reasons : Stress, fungal infections and various diseases as well as treatments ( radiotherapy, chemotherapy and so on... ). Creatine is present in the body and is found in foods such as red meat. Thus my conclusion. If creatine had an effect on DHT levels, every man would be bold except for vegetarians and vegans. There is ONLY one study suggesting this connection conducted on only 20 individuals. Smells fishy. Hair shedding is a very normal and natural response, it happens seasonally! Sorry but I agree to disagree. Creatine is a great supplement. Why do you think silver era bodybuilders eat pounds and pounds of red meat? Food for though guys.

I was planning to start using creatine again very soon. I used to use it. I havent used this supplement for quite a few years. I guess i will have to,and may as well just ditch my hair once i start taking the great natural muscle enhancement supplement creatine. I'll be 47 in may and even though my gym workouts are relatively good,i tend to feel that i really should have more mass and strength overall. I've gotten attached to having a nice full head of hair in the last couple of years but i've shaved my head plenty of times between the ages of 28 and 44. Basically i went back and forth in that span,(Bald to Growing it kind of long and then back to bald and then back to growing it out again,Back & Forth non-stop),much like a character actor of some sort. Yeah,It feels like its going to be hard in a way, ditching the hair again, but once i start taking creatine again and i get that certain amount of boost to my overall size and strength,i believe then,i will be more than eager to shave off my big ole head-rug and rock the Mr.Freeze look, which will probably compliment the big viking beard i've been growing out for a good while now. Overall,it Should make my life and work-life become more interesting.

dude - 100%. I used creatine monohydrate and like u had excellent gains, to the point that i was wowing myself, the downside - hairloss. The reason is it drastically increased your DHT ( Dihydrotestosterone). DHT causes scalp sebum which then causes hair loss. DHT as you get older also fucks your prostate up. So Creatine is great for muscle growth, but hairloss and prostate issues await you. I would strongly recommend taking a DHT blocker if you are going to do creatine. Took me 15 years of learning the hard way because i didnt want to give it up

I was told 20g the first week and 5g a week after that, you're dose is much lower than I was always told. I never used it, other than some protein powders that included it.

Welcome to life over 20. Your body stops keeping up with your workouts and lifestyle choices, you start noticing dieting takes a toll on your appearance much more. Giving you that unsexy gaunt zombie look. Nobody I ever knew attributed hair loss to creatine. It was always steroids, crash diets or hereditary genetics. It takes years to recover from getting shredded for a competition if you do it naturally.

If you have male pattern baldness running in the family there's no escape from it 90% of the time. It's not the Creatine but the dihydrotestosterone levels in your body.

which is inherited, hair grows by dna strutured instrution, its simply out growing then the new folicle has to wait until activated by genetic instruction and timing, your increasing muscle growth much faster then normal, this will affect other parts of your body, fingernails grow faster, you heal quicker, this is a variable to normal pattern baldness

I've been taking Creatine since long time on and off, but since 8 months I stopped taking Creatine, after 4 months being off Creatine started losing my hair like crazy I really didn't know what was the reason, just a month ago I got Black seeds oil from a Iranian grocery store in Denver, I'm back in Creatine and using black seeds for my hair everyday, still losing my hair but really less than one or 2 months ago, hopefully in next one to 2 months it stops completely.

Ok so what I've gathered from you is that creatine acts similar to a dht steroid for hair loss. Male pattern baldness is caused by hair follicles being overly sensitive to dht. If you have an increased amount of dht then you will notice hair loss earlier if you are genetically predisposed to getting male pattern baldness. On a different note, I take creatine the opposite way you do. I don't use it often but when I do I treat it like a blast and cruise. I take 10g for a week to get it completely saturated in my muscles and then I carry on with 5g for a few weeks before coming off for a few weeks to let it clear out of the muscle fibres.

I started noticing that I was losing my hair at 22 years old. Never used anything. All natural. I’m 26 now and I’m pretty thin on top. I just started cutting my hair shorter and shorter every year. I’m at no guard on the sides and a 1 on top. Most people don’t even notice than I’m balding because I did it so gradually.

I am in my mid twenties and have had a problem with hair loss since my late teens. I have tried everything pills, lotions, oils, nothing seemed to work. *I tried Superhairfood hair loss treatment* ( I found it at w…superhairfood…c ) It has only been a week and I have already seen a drastic reduction in hair loss and feels a little more thicker. I will definitely be purchasing another one of these shampoos and adding the lotion.

Elias Kechter creatine increases DHT. (Study condicted where a football team was given creatine and a week later their DHT levels were 59% higher). The leading cause for baldness is sensitivity of hair folicles to DHT which shinks your follicle . If you are not not sensitive to DHT nothing will happen. But if you are like the majority of the male population, its smarter to stay away from it.

nick, look at all the supplements youre useing,, protein turns into sugar into fat, and as all body builders know you need fat but consider lighten up on protein intake, hair is protein, folicles cant keep up with high protein intake as this is the way hair grows, the folicles out grow the root, shortening the cycle of old hair before new hair generation folicle can activate, the usable evidence is your fingernails growing faster then normal, this is a variable to male pattern baldness, which is inherited, your hair maybe simply outgrowing the dna structureing of sequence reproduction, lighten up

I doubt it's Making you lose hair especially immediately. It takes a decent amount of time/abuse even with actual gear/steroids to start losing hair & even then it doesn't happen to everyone. Never heard of anyone losing hair from " cycling " creatine.
