This week I’m going to give you a little preview of the upcoming Groove Trainer course. In this lesson we'll take a look at how to bass guitar relates and connects to the various drums in a groove.
We'll look at our relation to the main accents of the bass drum and snare, the subdivision outline of the hi hat and how to develop our accuracy in a groove.
The Groove Trainer course will feature 60 progressive groove etudes for players of a beginner to intermediate level. Great material for any player looking for a progressive path through functional bass lines.

Excellent. This has the potential to be your best course yet. At least from a practical day to day playing aspect. Chord tones and such, are probably better in terms of foundation. But this is the perfect one to build on that foundation going forward.

Gurl, I'm with you. I don't know why I don't study/practice more LOL. I need an accountability coach or something to check in bc I know when I do play I feel better...Maybe self sabotage.

This has always been something that when I heard it talked about, nobody could explain it clearly. As I started playing bass to my own songs while recording, I used the bass as another melodic instrument… a counter punctual melody line to create interest in the music. And in fact, that is basically my take on all the instruments in my rock band setting. But this simple explanation here now gives me a clear understanding of what I might do, if I wanted to do this, and why it’s done. Being self taught on all my instruments, I generally don’t play them in a traditional way. I put parts together that sound good to my ear, and that frame the song/music in the way/vibe that accents what’s going on in that song. It’s served me well as I seem to do things that others who that is their sole instrument seem to find clever or interesting, a different approach than they might have had. But I believe in strong fundamentals, so just the first 5:20 of this video has been super helpful to me. I look forward to learn more from you. 💯

Mark - this is the start of something great here. I've been drumming for 40+ years and have played with some really good bass players. Although the drums seem very staccato in terms of note values, I don't think of them that way when I'm playing. The best bass players I've worked with are able to lock in very well while recognizing that some of the instrument choices I make are implying longer note values. Fascinating stuff! And as a student of the bass I'm eager to see where this leads. Thank you!

Excellent lesson Mark, and something I definitely need to do more of. When I started playing bass and writing my own bass lines, I would always play to my guitarist and not the drummer. Basically because my band went through many different drummers. It wasn't until many years later that I became aware of what the drummer was playing. Admittedly, playing along to drum tracks is something I do not do too often and know I should be doing more. This video proved that, as right away, I was playing along and coming up with my own grooves. Thanks for sharing this. Fantastic stuff as always!

Great video Mark! Do you think you could teach us the song What You Won’t Do For Love covered by Victor Wooten, there are no ways to learn it online and I would love to see you teach it. Your videos are really well made and everything is very easy to understand. If you could that would be awesome.

No they won’t. That’s just an example of how the hi hat outlines the subdivisions you can use. The course is very progressive in terms of the grooves and VERY beginner based at the start
