I live in a city with very challenging topography (Haifa) and carving a building into a mountain is more common than you'd think. It's pretty common to have entrances on different floors on different sides of the building.

Having stations close to each other for terrain reasons is completely ok. Remember the London Underground has stations close together for much less reasons than the maintain situation you had. Sometimes at night you know your train isn't far because you can hear it at the next station!

You should absolutely add some bus routes between the terminals. Even if its just a direct route between them, it adds the option for someone to come in on an intercity bus and take a direct bus to the ferries for example.

@842wolves
@842wolves Жыл бұрын
Having been a resident of San Francisco for a year now, I have to say that I love your implementation of the trolley busses. Don't be afraid of height differences! I think that the dense zoning of your various areas (whether it be mid/high rises or low-rise in the hillside neighborhood) helps a lot in hiding the ugly terrain that would be usually held up by retaining walls. There are a lot of cool cities/areas with massive height differences between buildings.
@MajorHickE

It's always amused me how efficient cable cars can be. Even if I focus them on touristy areas as a gimmick, they do a great job of getting people over bodies of water or highways that are otherwise difficult to make accessible without adding too many bridges.

I think this city would probably struggle mightily with erosion. Especially where the river comes near the intercity passenger train station: There's no plants along the riverbank to secure the soil, so the first time any significant rain event occurs, all of the soli that was recently moved to the bank to make room for the train station will get washed into the river and cause major damage to the road and businesses along it. Ideally, we would have some sort of riparian zone restoration that could naturally secure the riverbank, but considering the space concerns some form of quay wall would be more appropriate. Really, any place in the city where a cliff directly drops into the riverbed could use some form of erosion protection - either a 10+ ft buffer zone at roughly water level where plants can put down roots to secure the riverbank (you can have pedestrian paths in this zone, think of the San Antonio River Walk or some of the more-developed areas of the Mississippi River National Recreational Area), or retention walls to secure the bank in places space does not permit a proper riparian zone.

I am a river ecologist and I am constantly wonder about these kind of things. Not just the rivers, but also the sea. But you just need to see how badly the river dynamics are simulated on the game... But it will be fun to have a collab series with some experts on the field and implement a bunch of cool measures! :D I think in most of the areas you mention, a restored buffer won't be enough. Probably big chunks of the delta would need to be given back to nature. High floods and high tides, particularly under climate change, will reclaim most of the delta sooner than later.

Those edges in the city river look ROUGH man! I think it's time to fix them, maybe even-out the ground to make the edges dissapear and the river flow through a bit more seamlessly, or maybe build quays and make it look softer, or increase the water level. The cliffs of the waterfront rivers are too high up, very ugly

@@jla9285 I like to flat out the area and eliminate cliffs by making a cliff on the opposite side of the river's edges. Basically turning the river shores into flatland. I hate that black cliff edge thingies that pop up when you make rivers ugh. I hate the water mechanic too so lame

During the intercity transit area part and really just the entire river where we want to keep the zoning along it, I feel like a walkable quay or seawall would be a smart addition to that river edge. Works in the sense of more walkability, helps with the extremely steep river edge and since you like the height of realism, it would slow down the erosion of that fast river

Loving this series, but please keep your subway lines following the road. I can’t imagine the cost of digging under the mountain to get to the airport. Also by following the roads, you can add a stop as density increases.

Tunnelling under mountains is not especially more difficult than tunnelling anywhere else... you get a boring machine, and start drilling. Sure, if the tunnel is close enough to the surface, you can do cut-and-cover... but that's massively more disruptive on the surface, and not necessarily all that much cheaper once you factor in the cost of that disruption.

Metro Plaza is such a great asset, and it feels underused with just two metro lines. The hillside district and the district by the IT sector buildings need a metro connection under the mountain or a bus route through a tunnel. Now there's no fast way to get from one place to the other even if these two districts are so near each other.
@simongeard4824
@simongeard4824 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I said something similar in the episode where he added it. It's a great looking asset, and a hugely useful one in the right area... but the "right area" is in the center of a city with the lines radiating outward in all directions. Not so much on a jutting-out cliff that cuts off access almost all of the possible directions...
@blueeyedbaer
@blueeyedbaer Жыл бұрын
@@simongeard4824 I agree. The Metro Plaza would fit nicely in the area with IT sector buildnings and CPP could make more lines from there. For the downtown I'd use a metro station from Plazas and Promenades DLC, the one that has two lines in cross formation. It's also a nice buildning and would be sufficient for Downtown in this city. Even the metro station with two parallel lines would fit nicely in the Downtown.

About the teal coverage line, you actually want to have lines intersect with each other, potentially at several points throughout a line. In real life this is what you would see in a well oiled transit system. Think in terms of arterial routes, collector routes and local routes, just as with roads, and your transit system will improve significantly while increasing ridership and connectivity, thus leading to less motorists on the roads. Im not sure what it looks like in the US but if you look at a European country with a well developed transit system you would see a lot of intersecting routes, as a real world example: I live on the edge of the city and during my 20 minute commute to uni I switch vehicle once and in total I will pass through 3-5 transit hubs on the way, you can access almost any part of the city and only have to switch bus/tram once or twice. I think improving and developing your transit planning skills should be on the agenda for anyone spending a lot of time in C:S.

I have 2 problems with this episode. 1: you’ve got a really indirect route from the main train station to the airport. And since most of the city seems to be in the river part of the build, it’s an unnecessarily long trip by transit to get there (especially since there’s a railway that goes directly from the main statin to the airport, seems like a no brainer to just run a line between them. 2: to compound the long metro ride from the main station to the airport, you’ve forced a transfer between the river line and the ocean line. That should be 1 long line at the very least, since you wouldn’t need a second train depot for the other line since they’re connected. So 1: make a heavy rail line that goes between the main intercity station and the airport. 2: loop the tracks in downtown so you can through run the metro (ie make a 3/4 circle track to connect the 2 stations your using)
@everacite

Should add through running for the metro - the lines are perfectly setup for it geographically even - only reason to use two lines would be for the aesthetic of transfers/trains in that downtown station

I'd suggest extending the inter-suburb trolleybus route (the one that came second in the hill area) to hug the dense bit of that district a bit more, and follow the other route. It's unusual to need to transfer if you're trying to get to "downtown", and a second route could help with demand. Additionally, if you plan to add any more routes, then stopping in the downtown allows more options for transfers

Very nice; good addition; there is one issue though: TMPE does not play well with buslanes; it turned all your buslanes into dedicated right turn lanes, meaning your buses can't go straight on or left, only right; which means they are probably not going to use it. Similarly, your other traffic can't go right, and have to go left and then go around and cross the road in order to go right. In short, you need to manually set all the lane directional allowances.
@carstenzimmermann4435

agreed for the regular vehicles (typically missing right turns after dedicated lanes are set), but TMPE offers "busses ignore lane arrows" option. This is a great feature also on regular roads.

Regarding "set to height" for the elevated stations - it doesn't work, because the *station* is at ground level. But what you can do is draw a temporary section of track off the elevated part of the station, and set the heights of other track segments to match that.

Samesies, that was the comment I was going to leave. I'm sure Phil will look at traffic flow in determining where to increase density but 7,000 trips is alot and I'd think would have a substantive traffic relief impact in at least a few areas. Especially where usage is highest like downtown and space elevator but overall, the transit network was hugely successful all over the city. Hoping for a recap to start the next ep that compares road congestion before and after.

Two thoughts: first, I know it's cool to see people using the multi-level metro-hub in the downtown, but with only two lines using the facility, it's really overkill. Second, I feel like a third metro line is justified operating from the IT cluster/intercity train station underneath the mountain to the Airport. The IT cluster is likely a bigger job center than the downtown, and the hillside neighborhood that got trolleybuses probably has the density to warrant more metro service. Also the proposed third line would complete a triangle and distribute metro transfers from one station today (downtown) to three (airport and IT cluster). And lastly, the third line could be extended across the river to the lower density residential areas when it makes sense to upzone them.

Can you add pedestrian access from that river city to industrial zone? Seems like a missed opportunity tbh.

Love the series, just a bit curious, will you upload the city to be available to download after you finish the series? Would love to wander through the city myself!
