Creating a Chalkboard Paint Area on Reclaimed Wood

We recently had a custom order that needed a chalkboard paint area in the middle of a stained background. A fairly simple process, but we wanted to be sure to show you how we pulled it off. A little blue painter's tape, a can of spray paint, and in no time, we have our results!

Cool project! You could brush some clear Gesso on the tape edges prior to spraying to cut down on the bleed. It works great on illustration board and canvas.

Question: were you able to write with chalk immediately after this dried? I'm asking because I read that you need to wipe chalk dust onto surface once first applied, then dried. I really liked the wood trim to chalkboard contrast. Adds a more artistic touch to what otherwise looks just like a chalkboard! Thanks in advance for answering if you do!

I've heard about the chalk dust thing too, but I've never done that. And we've always had everything turn out just fine. Thanks for the comment!

Aren't you suppose to chalk it up..would of liked to have seen that..and writing on the board and to see how good it erased

That's a good point. You know I've never been happy with this video, since so many of my pieces are learning times for me. I think we should do a "Take Two" and do a more thorough job. :)

@@AppleValleyFarmGA I made three chalkboard out of wood and one I just made out of a door..it is actually a door we use so perfect for notes..i used rustoleum chalkboard paint..on the door several coats and seasoned the surface..i could not get the chalk to write good..so I returned the paint back to the store..bought a different chalk paint in the craft area..it is thicker..well tried that today and let dry and seasoned..the chalk writes on it..pleased with the outcome..i don't know if.the paint made a difference.but it worked on.the hollow wood door..also have another board a old backing of a mirror..i made into a chalkboard last year..but for some reason chalk wouldn't write good on it.even after a put a coat of the new paint on it..and seasoned..i thought from the start the chalk is the problem ..well googled it and someone said wash surface with Dawn dish soap and then try it..i used regular dish soap..but it worked..i can write on it....making chalkboard are not the same like they had back in the day at school..i come to the conclusion the school boards might of been slate..smooth writing and erasing..idk.for sure..but as of now my boards are writeable and erasable.. So maybe it was a combo of the paint and cleaning the surface..who knows..but I like chalkboard..that is why I was wondering if.yours was writeable and erasable..thanks
