Thank you for this video. We currently have a separate broadcast mixer, but at times I may not have a volunteer to run it. I already have a matrix set to send FOH L/R to the broadcast mixer....BUT....what I learned from this is adding additional of speaking mics, playbacks and the audience mics. This was very helpful!!!

That’s a great idea, having the ability to both have a separate broadcast mix or to use a mix off the board!

I think that there’s SO many pencils in that mug, there’s no other choice than for them all to stand straight up... not sure why we have ANY pencils in the media booth, really! 😂

@@practicalworship Well, when I do sound, I still have a print out of the worship service and check off each part as it's done. It's old school when you don't have a computer monitor stepping you through each part. Take care during your service today!

I have it! All the video feeds from the platform go down. They continue to run the audio. The techs begin drawing stick figures of each member singing and/or playing their instrument on plain paper. The sheets are taped together into a circle the way the team is standing on the platform. Then the tech uses their cell phone in the centre of the team paper circle and rotates it or pauses on the folks per the song elements. The video is then dubbed into the audio live (difficult) or put into a restream of the service for later upload (easier). Yep, I'll leave now...

Also doing your crossover at amp level rather than at FOH mix on your console could help to mitigate the thinning out of broadcast mix, in this scenario. Great video Dave!

Dave, How are we hearing the playback in this video? Through your mic or recorded directly off the console? If a ministry is limited to using the FOH Mixer then using the capability of many digital consoles and their preset functions should be considered to allow the FOH tech to quickly switch between the music mix and speaking mix (and the presets would also "tweak" the room mic levels for the broadcast mix). I would strongly encourage any Church doing live broadcast streaming with the space and financial means to invest in a separate broadcast mixing console, location, equipment, and operator/tech even if they have to initially fall back to an older analog console for doing the broadcast mix. They'll find that the sound of that mix will improve. Also the broadcast mix location should have good acoustics and have a good set of monitor speakers (mixing via headphones, while it can be done, should be the last resort).

Great video! You quickly mentioned putting different people in different sonic spaces (around 11:18). Could you please ellaborate on that? Thanks in advance!

Great question. The sonic space is just the span of pitches from lowest to highest. So if a piano and an electric guitar are playing their chords in roughly the same pitch range, neither one will stick out and the whole thing just sounds muddy. But if, for example, the piano can move up an octave or at least invert their chords, the piano can live in a higher register and the guitar can fill out the lower register.

Would you recommend staying away from compressing the matrix without access to a Multiband? I’m running a QU-32 with basic compression on my streaming AUX out and it seems to be stomping on everything when the drums hit.

I’d still use some compression on the matrix even if it’s not multiband. I’d adjust the ratio really low (2:1) and adjust the threshold so that it’s only taking off 2-4 db. Then use your ears to taste. When it comes to Buss compression, a little goes a long way.
