📚🕯“A little library, growing every year, is an honorable part of man’s history. It is man’s duty to have books. A library is not a luxury, but one of the necessities of life. Be certain that your house is adequately and properly furnished- with books rather than furniture. Both if you can, but books at any rate.” -Henry Ward Beecher

I’m an old woman at 49 and have been an avid reader since I was 6. I’ve read probably a thousand books, maybe a bit more. My house has 6 bookshelves and they’ve always been my most steadfast companion. Reading has been the only sustaining hobby for decades now and I feel so lucky that all these years later I still love to read. You’ll never not see me without a book on the go. This video was gorgeously filmed and it makes me wish I had a friend, just one, who loves to read like I do so we can talk about books.

Yeah I'm the same way too, and have done this with library books as well (I sometimes underestimate how many books I can read and tend to check out multiple books at a time). ^^; What I've found helpful is setting up specific times of the day/night to read and having my phone turned off/set aside and/or given to my family members to hold onto. I tend to read at night before bed myself (not always one of my better time management habits - I tend stay up late reading - but at least it helps me have a somewhat consistent reading habit). I also recommend using the library to check out physical books for having breaks from phone use, and save Kindle/Libby for exclusively on-the-go reading - unless there's books that can only exclusively be found online/need to be bought because they aren't available at the library.

Aw thank you Kelli! I think the only downside of marking books is I probably wouldn't be able to loan them out to anyone, unless they wouldn't be distracted by that at all. And I feel like being able to borrow/loan can also be a huge part of creating a culture of books. So I totally get the hesitation. I suppose there are some books I do leave clean, but it's easier for me to absorb heavier theology by underlining!
@BelindaTN
@BelindaTN Жыл бұрын
@@quietintheland I agree. In my long experience with loaning books, I have come to accept that I seldom (and I do mean seldom) get them back. So now the only time I loan a book is if I no longer need or want it, I have more than one, or I am loaning it to someone that understands that being loaned something means they are to take care of it, keep up with it and return it without me having to ask for it. Usually be the time I have ask for the book, the one I loaned it too, does not even know where it is, or they loaned it to someone else. So if your book means enough to you that you dog ear, mark, highlight and record it in you common place book, you should not loan it out. Just a recommendation from an older lady that has spent years learning and accepting this is a fact. Books are a treasure (well some books are 🙂) and should be considered valuable. If someone thinks they might want the book, refer them to the library to check it out and take it home. Unless they want to sit in your house and look it over. 😄 Yes, I am passionate about special books.
@quietintheland
@quietintheland Жыл бұрын
@@BelindaTN Haha, yes I have a feeling that is very good advice. I don't know that I would lend a book to someone who is not as serious about a home library as I am! Praise the Lord for inspiring you with another edifying and inspirational video as you give Him all the honor. You are truly blessed with your amazing book collection. Reading from a screen doesn’t compare to reading from a book. The feeling of weight and the cover of the book in your hand. The smell of a book. The feeling of paper and excitingly turning each page by hand. The delicate texture of the type of paper used for Bibles. Contemplating a sentence, paragraph or word is exciting. There is no comparison. To read from a book and understand the inspiration written down by the author brings forth true wisdom and insight. That is why the Bible is the most important book ever written and published because God is the author of His Word. Throughout time God has and is still inspiring many authors. It’s a blessing to behold the journey God has set you on. Thank you for sharing that with us. Blessings and prayers to you sister Kaetlyn.

I have loved and collected books ever since my older brother taught me to read at age 2 1/2 in England. I have worked in school libraries all through my school years including university and worked in antiquarian bookstores as an adult. I have a library room at home each shelf filled to the ceiling with books. I read and love books every day, and in loving and respecting books, I have never dog eared, or underlined a book. That includes school books. I made and make notes in notebooks. It’s just a quirk I have to not deface any book. This was one of your best writings.

I've had the privilege of "studying" HIS WORD for almost 50 years now...HE'S still opening up HIS TRUTH. "There's nothing new under the sun"...however HIS WORD is abounding in layers (and patterns) of the revelation of HIS sovereign and predetermined will. "HIS mercies are new every morning" of each and every day. Now, we actually get to live by faith (Hab. 2:4-6) but in eternity we will have the capacity to fully know HIM...and see the magnitude of HIS glory...face to face. I Corinthians 13:12 We shall meet someday. Until then, I pray GOD'S protection, provision and will for you, and those you love. In CHRIST my beloved, Darla

Definitely one of my most favorite videos you've ever done. Thank you for encouraging such a beautiful way of life! My husband and I both love to read but I've been trying to figure out a way to make it more natural and cultural in our home...especially with our first baby arriving this fall.

The dog earring of the pages and highlighting of passages in books I still can't bring myself to do it. I love how it looks but I can still hear my parents telling me that it's disrespectful to do. I loved this little video, I loved the tattered and well read books

Everyone reads/absorbs information differently and that's totally okay. If it helps you comprehend better then I say go for it! I don't think it's disrespectful. Books are for our enjoyment and edification. I will say do keep older/antique editions clean, or use pencil in them if I really have to. But I have no problem marking up cheap paperbacks because it helps me retain the info better and reference it easier ☺

Influenced by The Cottage Fairy Channel? Wonderful video. Questions about Common Place practice: 1. Do you copy texts notes by a category or particular topic? Like a Jonathan Edwards miscellanies of sorts. 2. Read the whole book, then make all the notes for it in one place "this are all my notes on this book".

To answer your second question personally I do both. As I am reading I will take notes and highlight but I also will for sure do some reflection reading at the end. This allows me to still love and value my reflections after reading the entire novel or a book but make sure I don’t forget anything important as well. Get the best of both worlds

I'm curious how you catalogue these many books in various shelves around the house. Also, it's admirable how your household has a culture of books. In my family who are usually math-oriented and out in the world, I've always felt out of place for wanting to be surrounded by pen and paper (and the books I do read are honestly not intellectual. AS it is, it's not even popculture with mainstream books). In the end, it's in these videos that I find solace and remind myself of the peace I've forgotten when I held more paper and pen over my phone and being overly reliant on my internet connection.

Well this is a much better way to looking at our having too many books. We did a built in bookshelf, donated a ton of books, still are overflowing. We keep trying to downsize, but with homeschooling, many kids, etc. it doesn’t come easy.

Books are absolutely awesome. Sure they can become visual clutter but they still have meaning. Fit books in every nook and cranny available and love it for what it is. Knowledge education enjoyment fulfilment not just clutter I am blind and I still love physical book. Sure I cannot read all of the books or any of the books on my bookshelf that are not in Braille but that’s OK. I love coming home after a long day and remembering that I have booked. Utilizing books as a safe refuge. Nothing bad or upsetting needs to be going on for me to find books to be refuge. Sometimes it’s just a rainy day and it’s super fun to snuggle up with the book. It also adds depth to your life. You I’m not really sure how to phrase it but what you’re so important. If it is choppy I apologize I talk into the microphone in my phone so it sometimes picks up my thoughts but I try not to edit those out because then sings sometimes get missed that I want

Seeking to understand the lives of my grandmothers, I began reading "The Good Old Days" series of books, edited by Ken Tate. Ten+ volumes available on Abe Books. In these stressful/ irrational times, stories provide a delightful portrait of ordinary life in 1st half of 20th C. Trust, cooperation, and compassion were much more commonplace. Very soothing to digest and visualize w/ beautiful Norman Rockwell quality drawings, and photos.
