This year I am planting up an empty garden border with plants bought online, bought at a local garden centre, cuttings I make and plants moved from other parts of the garden. In this video I show the empty border and planting the first two shrubs; a deciduous azalea I have in a pot and a rhododendron which is in the wrong place in my front garden.
This is a series of videos showing the border develop from empty to mature.

I can’t wait to see how the azaleas do. Thank you for rescuing them. So sweet to save the worm! I always put found worms in my compost pile. I learned something new, I always put taller plants in the back. I like how you have added dimension while placing taller plants in the front.
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 жыл бұрын
That's so nice to rescue the worms Theresa. The compost worms are the smaller red worms and brandlings, the worms in soil are the much larger earthworms. So each have their own preference. It will interesting to see how some taller, but 'see-through', plants work towards the front. Glad it's given you ideas.

Wow, 45' will keep you busy Dawn! The main thing is remembering how big some shrubs will be when they are small when planted. Also remember 'anything' can be moved later if need be. I'm going to grow perennials near the shrubs which can simply be moved as the shrub gets bigger. Take pictures of your progress so you can see how well you've done and how fast things grow. Good luck - keep me posted.

Douglas - get some of the larger structure shrubs (like hydrangeas or whatever takes your fancy - but they will be small to begin with - check out how small mine are!) so you have the basis. You could pay much more money and get bigger shrubs for an instant bed if you prefer. Then next month (after the frosts) put in some perennials plus a few canna/calla lilies which will fill out some of the gaps and flower for you this Summer so the bed looks interesting and is slowly taking shape. Then add, change and adjust when you have the time and inclination over the following years. Don't try and do an Alan Titchmarsh and get the whole bed planted up in two days - let it happen over the Summer. Good luck.

@@paultsworld Thanks for the advice Paul.That is the format I will follow. Some Hydrangeas (paniculata),Azaleas,Rhododendrons, and maybe a Magnolia tree all suited for Minnesota (zone4). ,as well as two long rose beds backed by yew hedge to enclose the yard. I haven’t forgotten the moo fire dahlia and will look for a eunomos fortune. My goal is a nice English garden with lots of Mediterranean accents. Your right about Alan Titchmarsh. I’ve watched Love your garden episodes and my head spins when they bring a whole delivery truck of plants. Thank you again and happy gardening

Never saw ericacous potting mix before. Interesting. I am excited my blue hydrangea overwintered in my basement and made it, so I can plant it in my front yard. I thought I had underwatered it, but after a check of the roots I could see it was still alive. The one I planted in the ground last summer shows no signs, yet... a -25°F freeze may have done it in. I just love these flowering bushes! Looking forward to the rest of the garden design.

Hello I’m brand new to gardening and even more so to your Chanel that seems absolutely perfect for me. I just wanted to say I love to see that you still haves much excitement for gardening. I’ve never gardened before and have a serious set of health issues but garden as it seems to help I just wasn’t expecting to get so much enjoyment from the hobby as I am. Of corse there’s not too many English gardeners on KZfaq & I want to create a boarder in my garden for the first time, it’s a large space so lots to do and I have 4 small dogs and breed once a year so it must also be secure. We’ve always had azalea and Rhododendron but I have terrible ground and have so far been using pots, do you have any advice for what I can do to improve my earth? airs like clay 🙄 how can I plant things in that type of ground?
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 2 жыл бұрын
Gardening is indeed exciting - different things happening and growing every day. That’s a good idea having pots so you can choose any plant and have the correct soil type and conditions. Clay can be difficult to work, although it does have some advantages such as retaining nutrients and moisture which is handy in any area where it doesn’t rain much. However it would be a good idea to try and improve the soil. Use grit, sand and that manure I featured in the last video - Vitax X6. And last but not least look for plants that like clay soil - there are actually quite a few of them. If you have large space and 4 dogs then I would have a good selection of largish shrubs which can withstand footfall (paw fall!) and are also need less maintenance than herbaceous plants. Good luck and enjoy your garden.

When I transplant anything I water the roots before and after planting.
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea Frank. However I usually don't water roots before transplanting (I always soak a potted plant first) because I don't want to wash soil from the roots. I compromised by watering the hole beforehand then watering profusely after planting - making a moat - so all the water goes down to the plant roots. Good point though as we don't want dry roots.

I assume your climbing hydrangea has lots of flower buds, mine has some now for the first year which is great to see, it's first spring last year it didn't flower. You mention growing plants underneath shrubs like the azalea but I do personally worry that if a ground cover plant goes too close to a shrub it will take most of the water away from the shrub! I did get one new ground cover plant though, a vinca as I love the flowers of vinca, big and purple, almost like clematis flowers. For my two small ericaceous beds I have a small vaccinium 'Fireballs' plant, a crinodendron, a desfontainia and an azalea.
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for letting me know your plants in the azalea bed. Watch the vinca as mine has spread underground. You were correct about the 'flowering currant' seedling and had your doubts - I've just seen that now it has little bristles along the stem - it's a gooseberry! 😅 I was fooled by the leaves. My climbing hydrangea is going to flower for the first time - ever! Not a lot but it's a start.
@faunalife2906
@faunalife2906 3 жыл бұрын
@@paultsworld Thanks for the warning about the vinca, I will make sure it doesn't spread too far. I do know vinca can be vigorous and fast growing, almost like a clematis but along the ground, but my vinca is only small at the moment with 1 flower and 1 flower bud. I have red campion too in my garden which is quite fast growing and vigorous so I will have to keep an eye on it too. The climbing hydrangea I got is still only about a metre high but has three clusters of developing flower buds which look like broccoli at the moment! I look forward to you showing us your climbing hydrangea when it is in flower. Do you grow gooseberry in the garden or did the gooseberry seedling self seed from elsewhere?
