Creating a Retaining Wall on a model railway

In this video, I created my own retaining wall using the Ratio Retaining Wall arches and Wills Dressed Stone. In this video, I show you how I put it together ready for the overall roof. I then go onto paint the brickwork using a wash technique for the mortar and then a dry brush for the blue brick. I finally round it off by adding some signage!

Bilston Metro Station shows exactly this wall. It's not too different at Sandwell and Galton Bridge either so you're spot on for the region as far as this non-train person can see.

You made an excellent job of your retaining wall, it would be good to see your canopy build and how you tie it into the retaining wall.
@DudleyCentral

Thanks! Yes looking forward to the canopy, just need to get some proper platforms in for the canopy to land on the other side!

Dudley Central. Hi, I am in the final stages of converting my attic room (25ft by 12ft) for my first ever layout and have been collecting locos, wagons, buildings, point motors, accessories etc for the past five years (which equates to me having bought a new 3 series BMW) and while in lockdown I have been making moulds and plaster castings of retaining walls and buildings which is a very inexpensive way of producing the large amount that I will require. I have made 16 castings from a recently purchased low relief three storey factory and will have these positioned on top of each (2 rows of eight) to make a large abandoned factory. I also kept the plastic cover from a packet of biscuits which has the company name embossed on it and poured my casting plaster into the cover which will look brilliant as signage once placed on top of my factory. Using my casting plaster I have also made lots of rock castings using woodland scenic rock moulds, I also keep old (cleaned) the foil dishes that steak pies come in, these can be crushed and re shaped before pouring in casting plaster to create additional rocks. I have also made several tunnel portals and wall sections using the casting plaster. Casting plaster is a fantastic material which sets quickly and is rock hard making it perfect for any number of model railway projects. I intend to use it for my TMD hard standing areas as it is easy to get a smooth, level surface and you can easily scrap along the edge of the rails with a Stanley blade once set to allow locos to run along the rails. I have picked up loads of useful tips over the past five years from KZfaq one of which was to use two layers of 9mm plasterboard for creating platforms which is a very inexpensive way of creating whatever platform shape you might want and if I go down that route I might combine this method with my casting plaster. Sorry for rambling on here but it’s either that or plaster casting and it’s too nice to be sitting in doors today.

I needed more height with the arches , have two sets and don’t want to waste so the idea to build up the height great easy idea, easy when you know , signs also icing on the cake . Usually use enamel but for this your acrylic best approach

Yes you're right. From the plans I've seen, it looks to go up towards the bus station and then rejoin the old line and towards Merry Hill. Will be interesting to see how they do it as it's quite a steep rise from the track level to road level. Joe

@@steveyates2091 Interseting! What kind of era will you be basing that on? I used to cycle up the trail to Wombourne from the bridge near Himley. I Often wondered how the railway used to look along there. I know the station at Wombourne still exists as a cafe if i remember correctly? I'm up in Leeds now, but I still get to see bits around there when I visit my Mum.
