I made a semi-open world for my anime-style parkour game, Project Feline! In this devlog episode we'll be exploring my level design process, gathering and transforming reference from real-world locations into a fully playable 3-d map. We'll also be exploring my use of quick and iterative level block-outs to rapidly test design and gameplay. In addition, I'll be sharing my thoughts on how inspriation for storytelling can be found from the mundaneness and beauty in everday life.

Why not both open hub and obstacle course just have fun making levels then stitch them together like you would do with action blocking but on a larger scale. You dont need to follow single development way either way great job

what if instead an instand game over bc of time limit you just miss the train and have to survive under extreme consequences like the enemyes blocking up major pathgates with perhaps riot shields? could be exiting to then have to try to constantly survive at high risk danger at the terminal, so you don't get blocked out traps maybe? my idea is that the trap consists out of a panel on the wall. if you walk by the trap or wallrun on the opposite wall of the trap marked spot with lasers), it will shoot out a net. you coult then perform a skillcheck to free yourself from the trap. I suggest multiple types of traps like level two having electric charge, after wich you escaped from you gain a debuff like no wallrun for 5 sec. or there being a high veloucity net that damages you by one point the moveset feels a little basic too moveset idea 1 : when running out of for example a tunnel, you can press crouch and then s and then jump this will make her first crouch then turn 90 degrees when you press s then press jump and she will perform a sidewaysjumps onto the tunnel moveset idea 2 : diagonal sliding very basic idea: normal slide but she also rolls to the side whilst doing so moveset idea 3.1 : saltojump whilst airborn press and hold spacebar. she will start flipping backwards moveset idea 3.2 : polejump whilst you saltojump in the air you can grab onto a pole or hook onto the pole with your legs (according to witch side you are facing) pressing spacebar. you then let go shooting you out at a 45 degrees angle upwards giving you extra distance watch out tho as you cant land direcly onto the pole to perform a polejump. You must fall slightly infront of it moveset idea 3.3 : ceilling launch when you shoot of a pole and slam on the ceilling, quickly press spacebar again. you will launch yourself of the ceilling with your hands or legs shooting you almost direcly to the floor. you hit the floor with a roll, giving you a speed boost according to the fallen distance moveset idea 4 : dronehop you jump at a drone, knocking him over.you then proceed to jump of him, giving you extra height the drone dies in the process very easy: just have spacebar pressed when you jump of the drone (you could also just keept pressing the spacebar when you jumped ontop of the drone) moveset idea 4.2 : droneshot dronejump but you start it whilst crouching you will grab on the drone when you jump, taking him with you. in the air you then jump of him for good giving you a secondary doublejump (yep, tripplejumps are possible this way)

With this new metro map, I imagined Gabby speeding through and often bumping with npc passer-by's while saying: "Sorry~!", "Excuse me...", "Coming through!", "Got a train to catch~♪", etc. Also thought about her getting pinned down by police drones stacked on top of her, and Gabby probably saying something like: "H-Hey! Watch the tail!" or something.

Maybe instead of a simple "MISSION FAILED" when the timer runs out, you could add something like "REINFORCEMENTS ARRIVED" of the police squad, to make the level infinetly more harder, with helicopters or drones and heavier enemies that chase you down.
@Manie230
@Manie230 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea. Since the point is to be running away from law enforcement the timer acts more like a warning “watch out in 5 minutes the back up comes and will make this level a lot harder for you. ”

This is really cool, but i don't like collecting all 120 credits to leave. It should be 40. If you collect all 120, you would get a collectable. Something else you can do is make it like a Lego game and have a stud bar, but instead with credits of course.

The new map looks amazing! One of the things i'm curious about though, are there exactly 120 'coins' on the map? Making the player only collect 50 coins for example would allow for more creative route optimazations on speedruns + an extra objective for finding all the coins in a level. This could also create an oppertunity for hiding coins in secret area's or hard to reach places. Good luck on the future development! :)

KarWill collecting more orbs would mean you collect extra money ( he said they act as money in the story) so that could mean that in levels where it’s more relaxed and where you may not have a timer you can buy stuff from the local stores like cloths or something like that. Wich you cant buy if you only collect the required amount of orbs.

I love this idea, looks like a lot of fun. However having to find all 120 of 120 sounds like it will be easy for you since you placed them in the world - but regular players will probably get lost and have a tough time. Maybe have different tears of success. E.g. You need 70% to clear the level with a C, 80% B, 90% A, 100% S. That way people can choose how they want to play. They can go back to get that S later which will require memorizing the entire map and calculating the most efficient route to clear it in the least amount of time. A time bonus would be a good idea for all the speed runners out there. But this way people who care more about the story and want a more casual experience can still clear the level with at least a C and move on - knowing there's re-playability in the future if they feel like coming back for a better score. Getting better scores could be currency for unlocking cooler skins - just an idea :)

>Escape from the City Edit: Also, a suggestion for the credit counter: I would add a few more orbs to the level, but keep the max counter. Otherwise, players might end up in a situation where they're digging through the farthest corners to find the last 1 or 2 orbs. Adding more at least gives a small sense of leeway
@momsaccount4033
@momsaccount4033 4 жыл бұрын
As of the current build for the game, I believe the problem you presented won't be a common problem as many "Orb strings" are always put not far from each other and are pretty easy to find as these Orbs aren't the most inconspicuous objects in the world. Instead, I propose that the necessary amount of Orbs needed to complete the level be capped at a smaller amount while taking your idea and leaving extra bits here and there. This way, most players won't have trouble trying to find the "last few Orbs" while not setting up the player's mind for what looks like a difficult task (120 is a relatively large number) that is actually relatively simple

I just realised that I've not at all been paying attention to what he was saying because the Animation style of Gabi is just very good also I personally think that a combination of linear and open levels is probably for the best, since it offers a difference in kind compared to all linear courses, which doesn't have any real ability to modulate pace all that well, making all linear levels feel identical (see Sonic Advance 2)

I would love to have both types of maps they have each unique positiv aspects I myself like going fast with skillful plays where the linear levels shine, the more open maps are also great for the exploration aspect of them. I know making both would be stressful but maybe think of the more linear stages as like the bonus levels from Sonic games those make use of mechanics that expand on gimmicks that are in normal open exploration gameplay.
@unspi554
@unspi554 4 жыл бұрын
Yep Both should be great, depending on the need of story telling and ideas you get ! For exemple: first semi-open level Interchange she need to take the train. After this level a new level in the train where she need to escape outside the train in the tunnel, so a linear level.
@MidwayWuzzupman

Perhaps it could be balanced something like this: First is there's linear level that's designed to teach a new mechanic; then there's another one to help teach you the different ways of implementing that mechanic; and finally a semi-open level that has opportunities to combine your new mechanic with some of your existing mechanics.

To be honest while project feline has always interested me with its graphics and animation (loved your series on updating Gabby's model), it never looked like anything I would want to play for more than a few minutes. I am just not interested in playing a bunch of random parkour race maps with no story. It might be a great extra mode but this new direction however excites me more than any other video you have made so far. I really liked Jet set radio and mirror's edge. If you could find a way to combine these and make them your own I think it will work out of you. It would be fun to run around in a semi-open world doing missions and interacting with characters. I could see a game where you potentially have a few of these maps that you made here with characters spread throughout the maps that you can do tasks for like in Tony Hawk's Underground. I don't know what these tasks these characters would have you do but I bet you could make it work for your story.

Woah, it's been awesome watching this game progress. I definitely think that the open-world (or semi-open world for now at least) is the way to go. A Mirror's Edge (catalyst) feel is probably the best approach. Maybe have semi-open world missions which at the end of a story unlocks a full open world that focuses on the cool things you can do with movement? Can't wait to see where this goes, and if you happen to want some concept art for scenes and/or characters I'd be glad to help. I'm learning digital art at the moment so it might be fun to learn together? idk XD

It could potentially be interesting if there's NPCs scattered around the map asking for help, and completing their requests would give you credits I'm not sure if it really fits in the mood of the game though, but it will create a more interact-able design. For example, there could be this NPC you have to order and deliver food for. You go to the restaurant, order, wait a bit, and deliver it back before the food turns cold Depending on how well you do, the NPC will give a certain amount of credits This also opens up room for some sort of challenge or conditions applied to you during the quest's duration Maybe going too fast will make the food cool down faster, or spill, etc... This example probably ruins the flow of the game, but you get the idea. Also, this semi-open world idea is great! Imo, this episode is the best so far, keep up the great work! :D

You could even incorporate other game modes, such as instead of having to beat a timer, it could be collect all the keys or defeat all the enemies, etc... The linear style maps could be good bonus stages that are just for beating challenges and trials, but my vote is go with the semi open format. Keep up the great work! This looks wonderful and I'm so glad I decided to stick around and see the game unfold, as for the direction of the game you could try both styles. Some levels could be obstacle courses and others could be like the train getaway. Like if Gabby had just escaped the authorities and had to go through an obstacle course, then end up in the train station where she had to find enough money to board the train.

I absolutely love this new map style! I think the open area's suit the gameplay, and maybe you could have more linear areas connect more big wide open areas

Been follwing this for a while, man your persistance and motivation is inspiring. I think the semi-open world with the objectives scattered around is really adding to the experience. Perhaps you could even draw gameplay inspiration from games like Tony Hawks where some of the enviroment is destructible to access "hidden" areas. Or climbing to an extremely high/difficult place would uncover some secret :) Nice project! Keep up the work.

What if everything is like a Japanese streaming program in the near future, and she has to collect money or credits to be able to win or be free or gain fame or something like that in thematics levels, so as the story progresses she could gain followers, some could donate money or ask her for challenges during the race and comment on a Japanese-style chat like Twitch, and you could be winning the sponsorship of brands that impose more complex challenges, you could use that money to buy tricks, skills, levels, secret levels or objects that help you impress to more people and earn more money and popularity in each streaming. And in that way you could combine more linear levels with more open levels, repeat levels etc, but now with more skills, and it would serve as an excuse for money to be floating in the air, customization and have a bonus, score and health indicator. sorry for my bad english.

i really love the idea of a more mundane spin on the game!! i think injecting a more grounded, contemporary world with aspects of the sci-fi aesthetic you were originally going for would make for a really unique creative vision! as for gameplay, i think with such a mobility themed moveset, you've really built up wonderful tools for exploration. I also think the game modes could possibly work alongside one another! using both at different times could add variety to a stage, and create the differences in pace you had mentioned wanting to create in a previous video? Whatever you chose to go with, I'm really excited to see how this turns out! The progress so far is incredible and it is so wonderful to be able to see the game and its features, as well as you as a developer and content creator, grow and flourish! I wish you luck :D!

I may have suggested this already, but especially so since your grinding addition to the game, a good game to have a look at for gameplay reference is Hover. Hover has quite a heavy focus on it's grinding and further still has an almost entirely open world, though there is a story mission-line that you need to follow to unlock new areas, there are also countless side-missions that you can pick up and go between all over the place. The game definitely has a certain feel to it and also very tight controls hence why I suggest it as a gameplay reference.

I think for the map, you can take inspiration from mirror’s edge catalysts. It’s map design and how it fits with the story is very fitting with the futuristic atmosphere of your project.

I like the idea of alternating between both semi-open world and linear levels. They just need different objectives depending on their level type: semi-open world -> collect things before timer expires and linear -> finish level as quickly as possible. I would also include more coins on the level than are needed to fulfill the objective. So if you need 120 to board the train, include 130 on the level. Some players may not be able to find the last couple that they need and that could be frustrating. It would be good to have extras so they don't necessarily need to find them all except for completionist reasons.

I like the whole insight into this game, it's amazing, the health with three hits would be cool to see some type of indicator like 3 hearts and possible a way to replenish throughout a level, also maybe even a new type of adjective challenge for completing the level without loosing health, also for levels why not both types

I think you should do both quite honestly. It doesn't have to be "okay I did an open world level, now lets do a linear level" but if the style of level design suits what's happening and would make a fun experience, I say go for it.

+ I think you should look into the "Prince of Persia" (2008) game for a more hub semi open world + arena based level designs. Yes, it's indeed the most parkour + wall running based game out of all PoP games. + As for combat that fitting for more brawler escapee, if you want something much simpler & more dynamic with parkour flow moving, than I suggest to take a look into plenty of 2D platformer games with simple moves like 1-3 hit juggle attack/kill + dash + block + one hit parry/kill. + Suggestion: I think you should also plan a puzzle sections that involve both brains & parkour skills to breath & break monotony in game pacing.

You could use some of each, with semi-open world areas for often visited areas and the occasional place that asks you to explore, and linear areas for more action-based levels, I'd do it so that the first place you play in is a linear course while they tech you the controls and such, and then the open map station to show you the other half of the mechanics.

I can't give much feedback on gameplay but at least I'll say your video is fire, man! I feel so inspired to create something on my own right now! Great speech and pauses, beautiful editing and a fine soundtrack. Wish you'll get more recognition, I subscribed haha. As for the game I can say maybe when creating locations think of sizes and coridors. The main girl doesn't seem to be tall so other characters (maybe robots) will be taller, so think of the unit's sizes so they will look "comfortable" in the locations.
