Creating A Triple Ball Cypress Topiary 🌳

I’ve been inspired today to try and create a triple ball topiary after watching a wonderful gardener called Ken Saloni from Attwood Farm in the States.
He featured on an episode of a KZfaq channel I follow called HGTV Handmade and he explained all about topiaries, how they are created and grown, and it was so informative I thought I’d give it a try myself. It was such a great watch so i have added a link to that video at the end of mine - it is well worth watching.
I have a Van Gogh Tuscan Totem Pole Cypress which i just do not love and so I thought it would be the perfect thing to try it on.
I hope you enjoy this video and maybe I might in turn inspire you to give it a go yourself.

Yay, winter is nearly over 😀. I could hear your birds singing away and your garden already looks great. It's a busy time in garden preparation, cleaning and loosening up the soil ready for mulch, but the weather is so beautiful 😍. Love your new project and looking forward to seeing it fill out. Hello Kim and yes, we are going to be so busy very soon. I have this week off for half term so I’m hoping to get out today after my dog walk and do a bit of moving around of things. Hello Nancy, yes I’m hoping it will bush out more too 🙏 that’s such a weird little flowerbed, it gets no sunshine and the soil depth is minimal before you hit concrete, so we shall see. Hope you’re doing ok 🥰

Hi Janette you made me laugh, keep trimming the trunk up to the first ball. I trimmed a box once, trying to get a nice round ball, l snipped and snipped and got a perfect ball, a golf ball! ha! ha! I think yours turned out rather well, a bit of growth on it and it will look great. I've just started getting out in the garden again. I'm excited to see our bulbs coming up. Enjoy your day 🧑‍🌾🐝🦋🌿🤗

Good morning Penny 😃 my balls aren’t much bigger than tennis 🎾 balls 😂 but still, a fun way to spend a morning and hopefully it will bush out a bit and if it doesn’t, oh well, I didn’t care for it much anyway 😆 it’s so nice, it’s getting lighter at each end of the day now. Hello Pauline, it’s so lovely to have a new gardening friend. Goodness me, there are so many videos 😆 I think you just have to ‘have a go’, especially me, I have no training, only what I’ve learned from watching everyone else’s garden videos and trying (and killing) things in my own garden. I do love being outside though as I’m in an office Mon-Friday all day and it’s so good for our well-being isn’t it? Hi Janette, your first project for 2023. That must have been a bit scary cutting into your cypress but it's turned out very well. Looking forward to watching it fill out over the Spring and Summer. Very interesting about the central leader. The David Austen should be very happy near the fence. Will that be the next project? Your Spring garden is going to be so stunning with the yellow and purple of the daffodils and crocuses. I wasn't sure how to write the plural of crocus so I asked my friend Google and he said it can be crocuses or croci or just plain crocus. A bit of useless information that you probably already knew but I didn't. Hope you and Richard are having a lovely week. Much love, Bron xx

Hello there Bron 😄 and thanks so much, I’m not sure my cypress enjoyed the process but I did 🤣 it should be fine 🤞 and good to know the plural for crocus too haha, now I know 😊 we’ve had such lovely weather past few days, but today I was hoping to do more tidying up (I have the week off) but it was too cold and damp so I abandoned that idea. I have managed to move some plants around this week, and divided my sedum autumn joy so now have two sections of that. Did a bit more leaf picking up too, that’s never ending. Very excited for Spring now!! Hope you’re all good 😍

Good morning Janette, looking forward to seeing how your topiary progresses over the season. Your birds seem to be getting in the spring spirit. I'm finally seeing signs of life in my garden. I had my first crocus bloom yesterday and my daffodils are beginning to sprout. 34 days till spring !!! I'm about to become a grandfather for the second time . My daughter's due date is today.

Hi there! Yes those birds were having a real good song, isn’t it lovely. Your crocuses are ahead of mine, mine are not all up yet, a few are but only about an inch tall. I wonder if I left it too late to plant them - I did it on 23rd December. I am curious to see how my topiary does too. And oh wow congratulations in advance for your daughter, how exciting!! Good Morning Janette What a great idea🎉 I'm sure it won't fail to grow. Yes i can't wait for spring too. My kerria japonica is nearly in bloom. Its a plant that really livens up the garden. The yellow jasmine around my front door has been in bloom all winter. Looks cheery on those cold dull days. The one robin i see makes an apppearance every now and then ( like Lucy😂). And of course my tulips in pots hopefully will give a good show this year. Look after yourself. Sorry about the novelette😵 💞

You really have a talent for creating topiaries! I haven't tried this yet, but I may give it a try this year. It may get a little expensive though if it doesn't go well! Can't wait to see your spring bulbs!

Hi :) I love this Cyprus tree, the cones are lovely. Conifer types seem to look good as a group of different shapes and sizes but I just don’t have the space. Love your have a go attitude. Birds sound wonderful chirping away.

♥️ Happy Valentines Day ♥️ Janette ♥️ I love your can-do attitude. You just started cutting on that cypress like a pro and the result is quite pleasing. It didn’t hurt to have those lovely birds 🐦 cheering you on with their sweet Spring songs. It’s been a bit unseasonably warm here so I’ve been able to get outside and do some chores - cutting wayward branches, raking up sticks and twigs and general cleanup from the very windy weather we’ve had lately. My crocuses started blooming before the end of January and the daffodils are getting taller every day; won’t be long before they start blooming. Tulips are coming up as well. Thanks for another lovely video. Hope the rest of your day goes well. Update: I watched the topiary video and it was fascinating! Thanks for sharing. 😊

Hello JC and what lovely comments, thank you 💕 yes those birds were certainly a cheerful sound. Your crocuses are far ahead of mine which are only poking out an inch (and lots not at all) but I may have planted them too late as I didn’t do it until 23 Dec. But we will see. Sounds like you got loads done today, so did I! Was such a lovely day and I have the week off for half term so I spent 2 hours moving plants around and it was so lovely. I didn’t film it so it took me half the time it would have done and Lotte sat and watched me the whole time. It’s now 5.17pm and not yet dark so it’s been a really Springlike few days. Good job Jeanette, I enjoyed watching your pruning skills in action. I learnt a lot from it. Be creative in your garden in a skill and yet another reason how garden keeps on giving. Maybe it gives us a sense of achievement too? Keep on pruning ! I cut my lawn the other day, looks so much better, a lot of work ahead.

Hello Eileen, I forgot it’s Valentines Day 💖 Happy Valentines Day to you too! Richard and I don’t celebrate it, I tell him he has to be nice to me every day, not just once a year 😂 but he’s quite romantic, it’s the little things I think, like he gets the ice off the car for me in the mornings 😊 I was going to put it in a pot initially but that would have meant going out and buying a nice new one so I thought I’d just plant it quickly instead. Hope you’re doing ok 🥰

But the yukka is still looking very rough, I don’t hold out much hope for it, although everyone is telling me to hold off pulling it for a bit longer. Thats a great job Janette what a sweet little topiary. I tried doing that with a potted lemon cypress tree last year. Got carried away and snipped it shorter and smaller than i wanted but it grew ok even if it is a bit lopsided 😄. Its got character is what i say. Hope you are keeping well x

Hello Wendy, how are you? Well I had fun doing that, not sure the cypress enjoyed it much 😂 yes they are sisters from the same litter and Lotte is always outside with me and Lucy is lazy and sleeps inside. When they are together you can easily tell them apart as Lucy is half the size because she was an actual twin (same sac as another sister) was I understand is quite unusual, and I keep in touch with the owner of her twin. Her dog is called Lottie (as is their Mum) so it’s very confusing 😂😂 yes being outside is just SO good for us, it’s gorgeous today 🥰

I'm itching to get my seeds sown but know that I have to hold fire as the weather can turn and I mustn't get lulled into a false sense of security. Thanks for filling me in on the doggies. Aww yes they do have little personalities. I haven’t planned any seed sowing, I might give it a go but like you I have to wait for the weather to warm up first. I might just direct sow lots of zinnias this year, mine were so gorgeous last year. 🥰

😊😊 it’s the school holidays. We have 3 terms a year and half term is a week’s holiday in the middle of each term 😊 and then we get a couple of weeks off at the end of each term too 👍😉

Hello there Rio and thanks for watching (you have a great name too 😊), well I’m so glad if I’ve given you the inspiration to give it a try! Really, if I can do it then anyone can 😊 as I’m no expert. I’ve moved my rose now and it’s a DA Olivia Austin and it’s just beautiful but grows about 7ft tall so now it’s over by the fence so hopefully in a better spot. Do let me know how you get on with your topiary!! 👍🥰

Hi Janette, it will be really interesting to see how the Cypresses develops. I've started watching Linda Vater following your recommendation and am fascinated at her recent move to a house with a blank canvas garden, exciting but daunting, interested to know your thoughts? Xx

Hello Julie, so glad you’ve started watching Linda Vater, she’s one of my favourites and I never miss an episode. I think I would be very daunted with a blank lawn but I suppose you just start making flowerbeds and filling them up, she’s so good though it’s bound to look amazing. I got my love of topiary from her. I don’t suppose you saw her last garden then? I love her new home, it’s gorgeous. Hope you’re well and yes 🤞 fingers crossed for my topiary 😊🥰

Ah! They are my allium heads that I cut off last year and dried and spray painted them. I keep meaning to throw them away but they’ve lasted all this time (since about May). It’s my way of keeping them and I usually do that and spray them a different colour each year 💕

Hello there Philip! Thanks for watching and it’s doing really well. You will have seen where I initially planted it in this video and about 2 months ago I moved it to my very long border along the fence. It’s really thriving, I’m so pleased with it!
