Yes indeed. An olive grouping sounds great. Now to find a source for them. Thanks.

Jeff this material is actually fairly young and can be grown from seed, but I bought them from a retail nursery. Of course depending on where you live, you may or may not find them readily available

many thanks Terry. We have a number of new members of our club with small starter olive trees. This will be a great creative inspiration to them. I hope you will give regular updates on its development so that one can see the ongoing progression. That will be of great help to not only them but all of us.

this is one of the best group plantings i have seen and the ideas for creating it are great, especially the cage made out of skewers wired onto the base of the pot to tie the trees to. great idea !

Thanks David! Actually I was quite surprised how good it turned out, considering the really poor material I was using. Hope you feel inspired to go plant one of your own in the near future.

Really? In nature they grow like this where I live. Not really a forest, more like a grove or a group but they are usually very bushy, not tall trees

very interesting episode for me, unfortunately in Eastern Europe (Poland) we have a dark wet winter, frosts that olives in containers will not survive. With us, work on Mediterranean plants is possible from June. But I have a lot of olive tree seedlings and I was looking for an idea, because as solitaries I would have to wait until the end of my life for a mature look... In my opinion, a great place to get olives are roadsides in Croatia, mowed twice a year, you can find olives 5 centimeters in diameter and more , 5-10 centimeters high, well compacted. I have a few and if I manage to keep them alive after digging, it's great weed material 😉
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai Жыл бұрын
Wow Sebastian, those mowed olives sound perfect. Can I come dig some weeds with you? 😀 where I live I am very fortunate that we never get frost so we never need to protect trees, but in other other areas close by to my house there are growers which need to so, so it is quite local. Enjoy bonsai in Poland! It’s so nice to know that so many people all over the world are watching these videos, I am very happy.

Thanks Gary. These trees grow wild where I live so I’d say they are daily flexible with regards to repotting. However generally speaking with evergreens you want to repot when they are growing and it’s warmer, so late spring is a good time but the window is broad.

Is this an ok time to repot /create a forest like this in SA? W Cape specific. Thinking of doing an Acacia forest.
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai Жыл бұрын
Hi Johan. This forest was created a few weeks ago. It would be too late now for olives. You should have created an acacia in spring, you will need to wait till around September 2023 now.

It’s a very beautiful composition, what’s the size of the planting tray & height of the main tree?
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliment Shivagni. I am travelling at the moment so cannot measure it but I would say the pot is around 30cm in length. The height of the main tree is perhaps 15cm from soil level.

Were you able to buy wild Olives at a nursery or did you have to grow the yourself. We can only buy commercial varieties here in 🇦🇺 and have to dig up wild Olives out of a paddock.

These could definitely have been collected but I was fortunate, I found a nursery with a bunch of them for sale. They would have grown them from seed. Saved me from having to go searching for them in the bush.

Can you plant them straight with Akudama with no other soil? I never knew that I thought you have to mix akudama with other soil
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai Жыл бұрын
Good question Darren. I have been using akadama for my olives for some time now and it works great. It all depends on the size of tree, container and stage of development. This determines the mix and if you need more or less akadama.
