Watch Davide Carbone create an original track from scratch using Scaler 2 to generate all the harmonic and melodic content including chords, arpeggios, basslines, lead lines and melodies. In they video Davide starts by creating chords using Scaler's circle of fifths, chord edit mode and the suggest mode. He uses several instances of Scaler 2, both as an instrument, and as a midi effect to trigger various third part audio instruments. He also creates a melody using the keys lock feature. This video demonstrates a typical workflow of how Scaler is used across an entire track.

As a guitarist with NO keyboard skills I have struggled for the longest time trying to use Scaler itself and driving other VIs to create compositions. I usually end up just getting basic chord structures going and then running into "A Wall". This video Davide, has opened my brain up to all the other possibilities/uses of Scaler and the power of the wonderful tool that it is. THANK YOU so very much. Can't wait for Version 3! :)

My initial use of Scaler has been only to use it as a source of chords or chord progressions I can work with in a DAW, but thanks to this video, I now see there is great potential for using Scaler as a complete medium in which to create finished compositions and recordings from scratch. Thank you!

I have seen a lot of tries to do instructional videos for making music and I can say without doubt this is one of the best I seen on KZfaq, because Davide didn't assume people know music theory concepts, but tried to explain why he is doing it and how do you put it together. Thank you for the effort!

Scaler 2 is THE premier tool for help with music theory and creating interesting chord progressions but one thing it lacks is to help users understand the "why". I may be in the minority but I believe it Scaler 2 modulates over to helping users understand the "why", this would go from a great creation tool to the leading educational and creation tool. For example, there will be users whom don't know the difference between modal harmony and functional harmony and that the chord progression used is functional as opposed to modal. I Sus4 / I Sus2 / I / I Sus4 / I Sus2 / vi7 over C / IV over C Tonic / Tonic / Tonic / Tonic / Tonic / Tonic / Sub Dom The music sounds nice because it remains mostly in the Tonic which a "home" of a functional progression with the only tension being offered by the IV over C which has a Sub Dominant function. As you listen to the music, you'll hear that it is calm, centred and generally positive because we are in that safe space of the Tonic. This is not to say that the chord progression is wrong because it's not, I just want to highlight and connect some dots for users out there and make them a little aware of the "why" the progression works from a progression point of view. This does not include the added positives bought about by excellent arrangements because you can have an amazing harmonic chord progression but if you don't have the melodic content to back it up by a strong arrangement then the chord progression, no matter how interesting, would be boring and the end result would also be boring. Davide Carbone does a wonderful job, time and again, to showcase the power of Scaler 2 and I would always recommend this to be part of your toolset to generate ideas but I would invite people to use it to learn more about music theory and for those that developed Scaler 2 to examine the possibility of expanding the usability of this wonderful program to include an educational approach as well.

This is what sets plugins apart when there is so much effort made in tutorials and how to use it, I have bought it not used it yet, I will go through these amazing tutorials so I can get the best of out it. Purest made say you should learn the chords, but for me its nothing to do with that. Using tools like this removes muscle memory as we always subconsciously have our favourite progression. It allows you to experiment and get inspiration and come up with harmonies and progressions you would never come up with any other way!

Do not regret buying scaler at all, its been a huge help and you tend to pickup things as you go in terms of theory, it's sort of learning out of play instead of making it boring. Would really appreciate more videos/song making in the style of funk or jazz, like Jacob Collier style or Louis Cole to really put Scaler to the test, or even you making a pop song with a few chord variations or something. I personally struggle with going from a normal triad to a different chord maybe with more tonality to it, so seeing more variations or even just more videos similar to this would help a bunch for perspective. Just some suggestions. Thanks so much

Ok, this is truly inspirational, but David…. You are a popular brand! The sweater, the white collar shirt, glasses and beard, plus your excellent quality voice and the flow of your videos. It is unique and effective. We musicians and creators have great respect for your music theory knowledge, creativity, skills with Logic X, and of course your deep knowledge and skill with Scaler. I would say you’re sitting on a $1 million brand - and the brand is you! When you think of Rick Beato, Andrew Huang or Mary Spender, they’ve leveraged their brand to attract 2 - 3 million subscribers. Perhaps the barrier to increasing your popularity is the fact it’s “Scaler Only” which is a limited audience, but should you expand your videos to cover complimentary products, you could double or triple your wealth. You’ve created your brand… now where do you take it next?

You composed the whole track by binding the chords and drawing in the piano roll. After the whole musical idea is final, should we use those scalers as inputs of favourite instruments or should we capture the midis and drop there? If we capture the midis and remove all the scaler instances is there any disadvantages? On the whole, what is the best way to finalize?
@davidecarbonemusic

HI Arafat, I guess it doesn't really matter. When I am making a track I just want to get it done so often it ends where it ends. Now this isn't always good practice if you need to come back to it after a few years where ideally you've done some housekeeping. But I just find the great artists (not implying I am one of them!) often just get it done whilst the majority of producers fuss too much in the detail. I always tell producers to just make track after track after track. Most of them won't be great but occasionally one will live forever. The more time making tracks the less time in the detail...Hope the answer is helpful!

Going back through the videos because I more or less gave up on scaler after buying: the arpeggios always seem slightly off sync with my DAW and the transitions between chords are always messy. I'm sure it's just that I'm missing something so I'm going 'back to school' to see what it is. I'd love to love this as much as others. Right now, it's only helping me make sense of unfamiliar chords (which to be fair is a lot) but there's some much more to it than that, I realise
