Creating Dust: A Step-by-step Guide [1/35 scale] ASLAV 8x8

If you are looking for a way to create realistic dust effect in 1/35 scale, in this video you will find a simple way to create the best-looking effect using basic tools. I used Australian ASLAV 8x8 military transporter to present this step-by-step guide [tutorial].
This Australian vehicle is one of the 8 models presented in my book titled Modeling Modern Armored Fighting 8x8 Vehicles and published by AK Interactive. You can also find there Stryker, Centauro, Bumerang, Rosomak, Boxer, ZTL-11 and VBCI. All ideas presented there can be used on every modern afv model to create weathering effect but also on any other model you build.

That looks better than any other cotton effort I've ever seen. For smoke, cotton usually fails bit for dust, it's working!

A hard effect to pull off. I think you achieved a pretty good result. I think this and the water splash effect on your other 8x8 are things that are great for added interest to the finished model.

Usually this effect looks alright but not impressive to me. You have made it look great. I think the addition of the pigment is what helped as it makes it look more dusty rather than fibrous. Thanks for sharing!

That's why I said that this solution is controversial. I m not sure about it in 100% but I dont see anything better for this. :)

Another fantastic model. Thats the only way ive seen people do dust clouds on models and it allso works great for smoke and explosions.

That dust effect looks really good. I think it is very hard to get it to look right and you have nailed it. Obviously to throw up a dust cloud the vehicle is travelling at say 10-20 KPH so the wheels would look like they are turning. I have often wondered about how to create that effect. I have tried it with aircraft propellers and helicopter rotors for capturing them in flight but not to my satisfaction yet. I would be interested to know if you have any thoughts.

Well, the only idea I have in my mind is painting them with some circles or lines on the tires to make the illusion of motion. I have no idea it is good and possible :)
