Wow, what a great idea! Thanks Gary, this is really useful and FUN. Too bad there's not a way to automatically use the actual location of a photo or video to generate a point on the map. By using the media data though I'll be able to pinpoint the location more closely on the map. Thanks!!

Thanks Gary - Great as usual. I prefer using Keynote to create travel maps. Much more flexibility. You can create simple maps like these or much more complex ones with line draw and Magic Move.

@@davidis7 Do you mean for THESE videos? I use ScreenFlow, which specializes in screen tutorials like these. But for other projects I sometimes use FCP and sometimes uses iMovie. Love FCP though.

Hi Gary, My travel map route is only in Europe so I would be closer in than your global example which means my line is very fat and doesn't look great. Is there some way to edit the line thickness to make it appropriate for different maps? Thanks. Great videos by the way, keep em coming....

No way to edit the thickness. If you want something else you'll need to check out my more recent tutorial on doing this in Motion or the one coming soon (next week) on doing it in Keynote.

Great stuff as ever Gary. It's a pity it doesn't allow you to configure it to show one country only allowing you to show a few hundred mile journey on an expanded map of a given country.

Yeah, cute trick for flying but not much else. Years ago I created moving map transitions between scene locations in FCP for traveling through Kenya and Tanzania. Even used a clip art Land Rover as the thing that traveled along the roads.

Great video, ! Major problem however on macos Sonoma beta when I share to create an mp4 file the globe animations are not exported and seem stuck on the default animation. EDIT: Works now but only after selecting the reverse route button twice.

It would be nicer if I could use exact addresses or gps coordinates. Since not mentioned I am assuming it’s not possible?

It doesn't make sense to use addresses since the level of detail is "global" here. You wouldn't see a different between an address in NYC vs just a big dot over NYC. But you can always change the label as I show in the video.

Only straight lines. If you want to do something different, it will take a lot more effort and some animation skills.

No, this is a special function of iMovie. But you can always do it in iMovie, export, and then use the results as a clip in FCP.

Make sure you scroll up in the Background section. Also, there are reports that it doesn't work with some System region settings.

@@blissas7261 "M2" is your hardware, not the version of iMovie. But if your region is India that would explain it. I don't know why, but only some regions have iMovie Maps available.

For those of us who have never used iMovie: you did not show how to COPY and then PASTE the first part of the map journey (CMD C & CMD VV) did not work on my Mac Studio and then you did not show how to save the video to a file (no 'SAVE' verbage shows up when I have my finished map!)

@@ranveerbadhan What are your language and region settings in System Settings? It has been reported by some that the iMovie maps may not be available in some languages. You can try going to your Mac's System Settings and changing your language and/or region to see if that helps.
