Creating Inks from Natural Materials with Marjorie Morgan

Designed for monotype and monoprint printmakers, this event combines art making with cooking and environmentalism as it shows the dynamic nature of working with natural inks. In this Demo/Workshop, Marjorie Morgan will discuss the advantages of creating natural inks, show images of artwork, and then demonstrate how to create inks, prepare plates and print with them. The demonstration will include how to create two different inks at home, and how to print with them using a press, a pasta roller, or no press at all.
Marjorie Morgan is a painter and printmaker who grew up in Vermont and currently lives and works in Western Massachusetts. A member of The Oxbow Gallery and Zea Mays Printmaking, she has been completely captivated by the practice of making her own inks and pigments and using them in drawing, painting and printmaking.
This program is hosted by the Monotype Guild of New England. The Monotype Guild of New England is a nonprofit organization of contemporary artists creating unique impressions by working in the medium of monotypes and monoprints. Founded in 1985 by a small group of New England artists, the Guild has curated over one hundred exhibitions and has expanded its membership to include artists from across the United States. I just came across this video. And I'm so very happy I did. I am from southern MA near RI line. I'll be checking out your most recent videos also. My father has taught me how to use natural materials to create inks and paints ect the same way the natives did. I've been doing this for 40 years. I'm not on the internet to much, so this I the first time I'm hearing of you guys. I'm super excited to see what more I can learn from you 🥰🩷🩷🩷✌️✌️

Thank you so much! Have the pasta press and I have been immersed in making ink for 3 months now, I just make ink in my kitchen now and use a blender for smoothies! 😂

These are mostly non archival prints, but changing, depending on the plant/...? Do mordants (like when fabric prints/dye) work on paper? Am thinking of soe of the plastic that is in packaging might be good experimenting with.

Have you tried making a large batch of ink and then freezing it in ice cube trays for future use?

How do you make ink from alkanet root or alkanet powder? Alkana tinctoria, not the green alkanet, Anchusa. Please? I've tried adding gum Arabic to the powder and then adding water and it just floats or sinks in clear liquid. I've tried boiling roots in water. I got brown. I've tried putting the roots in vodka in a dark place for 2 or 3 weeks and got a very faint pinkish red much MUCH too watery to use. Help?

Lookup making paint from pigment also look up making lake pigments I think they might help
