There is a lot to be said for plant-starts....but there is a sense of accomplishment in a seedling like that becoming a big plant. That looks like it will be a success.

That is quite nice. One thing you (as well as many others) forgot to mention is the cost. Some plants you mentioned came from seeds that you probably bought at the grocery store as food. That doesn't work well for some plants, such as avocado. But there were many other plants that you probably had to purchase in some form from specialty nurseries. It would be nice to get a grasp on the expense of the "exotics". All in all though it is a great little video. Thank you.

Yes this is very true but I am as frugal as they get and like to get things on sale or small and baby them till they're strong enough to acclimate. That one beautiful Zutano avocado tree was bought in Dec 2018 at Home Depot for $30 and kept in my garage till spring of 2019 and was only 30 inches tall. It now is a vibrant 8 feet tall flowering beauty. I also shop online for plants on Ebay, Etsy and other nurseries that can ship to me cheaply. I've also volunteered to offload semi truck loads of trees from a local tropical nursery for store credit.

So inspiring! We are in AZ too, but about 1 hour south of Tucson. I didn't realize avocados could grow here- we get pretty cold winters but I think I"ll try it. All your plants look so healthy and you seem to really care for them and enjoy them.

I'm glad you're inspired and it's definitely become my passion to be outside all day. More like an obsession. My AZ Arivipa I believe is a little more cold hardy since it's a grafted variety from an old tree that grows in Arivipa Canyon south of Globe. I got mine from Shamus O'Learys Grreenlife Nursery and every once in a while they bring a shipment to the Tuscon peeps.

Nice! How old is your papaya and what do you feed your gorgeous food forest?
@sweetmandolynsurbanfarm7188
@sweetmandolynsurbanfarm7188 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachelle That papaya was my lone seedling survivor from a Hawaiian I saved the seeds from and threw on the ground Oct of 2019. my soil is slowly becoming a living soil with deep wood chips and chop and drop of everything I grow. I also use Alfalfa horse feed once in spring and make my own putrefied compost fertilizer (Korean natural farming ) and foliar feed with fish emulsion, liquid kelp and chelated iron and juice from my worm bin. Lots of compost also. Trees in chicken run well that's their job.

Maybe I missed it but what have you done that created a microclimate? Is it just the large amount of leaves providing shade as well as transpiration? Is some of your taller plants for that purpose?
@sweetmandolynsurbanfarm7188
@sweetmandolynsurbanfarm7188 3 жыл бұрын
Yes that was last year when everything was getting started and in this hot Az desert sun without a microclimate it would be nearly impossible to grow what I'm growing. It provides afternoon shade in summer and frost protection in winter plus it makes temperatures less extreme while adding moisture to our dry heat. An update next month I will help explain that. Thanks for the comment 👍

I just covered open dirt with rocks, did I make it even hotter? I need more specific information on what exactly I need to do to create a more hospitable environment. Any resources to suggest?
@sweetmandolynsurbanfarm7188
@sweetmandolynsurbanfarm7188 3 жыл бұрын
Yes rocks hold on to the heat and make it hotter like a solar cooker. It all depends on what you want to achieve for me to make suggestions. I just got another load last week from chipdrop.com and where I have anything growing I cover the dripline of the soil 8-12 inches and over time with proper watering it becomes a living fertile soil and the yard becomes lush with green growth and shade.
